Yokohama AVID V4S 3 year 20K miles report

Well, I replaced my tires a couple of days ago. They lasted 3 years and just under 20K miles. For the first 2 years the tires were very quiet and very sticky :D, just this summer they got louder but were still very glued to the road. I noticed the difference after a road trip to Cali, 1500 miles round trip. I generally take it in one haul with one maybe 2 stops for gas each way so they did go through a hot cycle and apparently didn't like it s they started to wear much faster after that.

They were very close to the wear bars 2-3/32nds, they start at 10, and they wore evenly. They are warranted to last 5 years 60,000 miles according to Yokohama. I bought mine 09/06 and changed them 08/09, so just under 3 years. However, they were manufactured 12/05 according to the DOT. Don't know if that made any difference.

Anyhoo, called Yokohama told them about it, they gave me a case number, told them which shop I used, drove in and the shop manager had a look, he called their number, got me 2/3rds of their current selling price rebate. So I put on another set.

Thought people would like to know since a few people have bought the same tire, including RTF.

EDIT: mine are 225/55R16

Good to know that in addition to a top-rated product, Yokohama also stands behind their tires as well. I had Avid TRZ tires on my Civic, and now Avid V4s tires on my Accord and I've been happy, and I know that most of the places that rate tires, they get high scores. A good company makes a good product even better.

My Avid V4s stick like glue and are quiet. It is nice to have the confirmation that I have made a good decision with this choice of tires. This is a truely great forum and I really appreciate DRIVE ACCORD. Thanks again.

Glad to hear your good report. Today I ordered AVID V4S for my Accord from my local Hibdon tires. I'm replacing worn out Bridgestone Potenzas G009's which were down to the wear bars after only 31,000 miles. Hibdon offered me a 40% discount off any replacement tire I choose.

I agonized for a few days between Bridgestone Potenza G019's and Yokohama AVID V4S. I read lots of online reviews, read Tirerack reviews filtered down to Accord owners with spirited driving styles like mine, checked them out on Consumer Reports, everything I could think of to research my purchase decision. I could have flipped a coin and been a-okay either way but ultimately the slightly superior wet performance of the AVIDs won the day.

When it comes to wet performance you won't be sorry. I couldn't tell the slighest difference between wet and dry getting the car moving off the line or cornering till it got so close to the wear bars, and even then it was still very well planted in the wet.

I'm actually considering Yokohama V4S and Toyo Versado LX for my next set of tire. Good to know that fellow DA members are happy with Yokohama Avid V4S.

In Toronto, Canada I was quoted CAD$ 156 (US$ 142)/tire installed. I found a cheaper price down south, Buffall, NY. buffalonytires.com quoted me for the same tire US$ 111/tire installed. I live close to the US border so I will definitely pick up my next set of tires from them.

I am sharing this info for DA members who live close to Buffalo, NY. You may want to consider www.buffalonytires.com.

I'm having the same solid performance that everyone else on this thread is reporting, and compared to the Nittos ... I kept $600 in my pocket, got a spoiler and fog lights with my savings.

In my case, I narrowed it down to the Yokohama Avid V4s and the Dunlop SP Sport Signature; both tires had extremely strong ratings everywhere I looked, running pretty much neck-in-neck across the board. I ended up shopping for both, but got the Yokos mostly because the Dunlops are still somewhat new and no one in my area, at least that I could find, were selling them yet.

I've been very happy with my choice. My experience with the Yokos is pretty much as I expected, and on a par with what's been reported here. They're quiet, they grip very well on wet and dry pavement (and the wet traction puts the stock Michelins to shame, for a fraction of the price), they corner nicely, and I haven't noticed any adverse effect on my gas milleage. I've been driving on them for maybe 6K miles, and the treads seem to be holding up well. Of course, I had Yokohama Avid TRZ tires on my old Civic, and they were also a very well rated tire that my personal experience fit what I'd seen in the reviews, as well, so I'm not surprised that I'm having a similar experience with these tires.

One thing I found curious was the number of tire places I went that didn't have either of those tires, they wanted to sell me something else, so they'd always make a big deal of having me look at the tread. Um, exactly what is looking at the tread supposed to tell me? Isn't that on a par with kicking the tires when you buy a new car? I kept telling them I can't see how a tire is going to ride or grip by looking at the tread. I can, however, tell all that by reading a review on the Internet.

Perhaps the reason that some places do not carry Yokahamas or other brands is due to the profit percentage that they generate. Other brands have a higher profit which influences the retailer to a greater extent.

Just an initial update on my new tires....I had the Avid V4s put on about two weeks ago. So far, they seem to be doing their job. The only thing I noticed while on a 2-hour interstate trip was some more vibration than I previously had in the steering wheel when the car was up around 70-80mph. Obviously, that could be alignment, which I thought they were going to check when they installed them, but I don't think they did. Is that normal for the initial miles on a set of tires?...In town at 30-50mph, they're perfectly fine. Otherwise, they've been good so far. They definitely handle cornering better than the MXM4's. We've also had a lot of rain around here lately, but I really wasn't out on the roads for extended periods during those times so I can't comment much on their wet handling.

We'll see how things go over the first few thousands miles....

Your tires should have been balanced when you got them, and they probably were, but that doesn't mean they didn't miss something, or possibly one of the weights has dislodged. Whenever you get them rotated, they'll check the balance again, and that should fix it.

^+1 definitely balancing. Very quiet and no vibration what so ever at highway speeds. If the balancing is not the issue then maybe a defective one.

thanks for the reviews everyone. Going to pick up four V4s from Discount Tire Direct since they are doing free ship and a $40 rebate on them currently. Will post back my likings or dislikes.

Can anybody with Yokohama V4S comment on snow performance? The V4S/H4S was recommended to me by my local tire dealer because I want an all-season option. I am also looking at the General Altimax HP. Thanks in advance!!

So, I've my had V4S tires for a little over a month and maybe 1,200 miles. After a couple of highway trips I really started noticing vibration, especially after 65-70mph. It was somewhat noticeable even around 35mph, but definitely got worse as I went faster. I made a trip back to the shop where I bought them and had them re-balanced, but that didn't do it. Finally, the shop that installed them suggested I have them balanced with a Road Force, which I tracked down at another shop. It definitely made a noticeable difference so far, but I haven't hit the highway speeds of 70+ where I was really noticing it.

...The lesson of my story is that anyone looking for new tires should definitely get them at a place that has a Road Force balancer so they're good from the start. If not, you end up paying to have them balanced at another place, as in my case.

I'm definitely no Road Force expert, but it seemed to make a big difference. Is this usually the case compared to a regular tire balancing? I'll be a true believer as soon as I can actual try them out at highway speeds again.

-On a side note, I was originally going to have them Road Force balanced at a Mazda/Toyota dealership because they were the most convenient, but their price was $149!!...I paid $59 for the same thing at a auto shop a few miles away. I thought that was a pretty ridiculous difference in price.

I agree and disagree. I think a lot has to do with the build quality of the tire. Over the years i have had many sets of Michelin tires and never had a abd one and also thye have required very liitle weight to balance and held the balance for many miles. My last set lasted 85,000 and never was balanced at all and were smooth from day one to the last..... IMO

That makes sense. I actually haven't been through many tire purchases before because I usually only had my cars for a few years at a time. I don't remember having issues with the 1-2 tire purchases I did have. There actually is a whole portion of the Yokohama website dedicated to vibrations due to unbalanced tires and the steps to take to fix it, but I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing for them! They seem fine after the Road Force, but for peace of mind, I may stick to Michelins next time...which still won't be for a few years on my wife's car.

I have a 4 hour road trip coming up soon, so I'm curious to see how that goes when I'm at 75-85mph.

...thanks for the input.
