View Full Version : Self Diagnosing Engine Check Light?
DreamTFK 09-04-2009, 06:21 AM Looked through the 7th Gen FAQ and did a search through the forums but came up with nothing I figured there would be a post about this somewhere.
I remember with my Maxima if found a DIY guide to manually obtaining the error codes and being able to diagnose them online via a tool - is there anything like this for 7th Gen Accords? I had to open a panel under the steering column and flick over a switch and the error lights would pulse long and short depending on the code.
My engine check light has been coming on and going off for months now but only recently has remained on. At first I tightened my gas cap and that did the trick but I have no idea what it could be now.
accordn17 09-04-2009, 06:24 AM i know on my old 91 honda accord i was able to retrieve the codes by using a paper clip in the slot where you got the codes from and it would make the s light in the gauges blink a certain amount of times which would give you the codes through morse code...

Sounds familiar to what I had to do with my Maxima. I popped open a piece of plastic and there was a swtich covered by a foil sticker that I simply had to click over then write down the light pulses (long short long long etc.)

thats exactly what i had to do.... you just refreshed my memory.. haha.. i dont know if you would be able to do it with newer hondas.. but who knows..
accordn17 09-04-2009, 06:34 AM is your car acting up, are your mpg's ok? what are the symptoms?
DreamTFK 09-04-2009, 07:13 AM No symptoms that I have noticed honestly. I know my electrical has been acting up ever since I put in my HID kit (gearshift column lights dont work and my 12v adapter doesn't work) so I put in a relay kit which still didn't fix the problem - mechanically though everything seems fine.
accordn17 09-04-2009, 07:49 AM i put an hid pnp kit in mine to and havent had any problems at all.. thats strange... ::::knock on wood:::::
sodaks2k 09-04-2009, 07:52 AM You can have your CEL's checked for free at autozone, advanced auto and places like that. I beleive there is a way to get the codes manually, but I do not know how.

yea with a paper clip... as was mentioned above

From what I have read after doing a search on Google is that the paper clip method only works on older Honda's.

huh.. aint that something.. they realized they were losing out on customers coming in for CEL readings so they made sure we couldnt do it anymore with something as simple as a paper clip... lol
BLCKFLSH 09-04-2009, 01:31 PM I remember someone saying you could short two of the DLC (Data Link Connector) pins together, and the Check Engine Light would blink the codes. I wrote in down in my service manual, and it was pin #s 4 and 9. I have never tried this, and would be afraid to short something out. You try it, and let me know what happens........Just kidding.

pin #4 is ground and pin #9 is reserved for every manufacturer to have their own interpretation. In the 6th generation v6 the #9 pin was used to trigger the ECU to flash the code via the engine light on the dash. Pin #9 has since changed by Honda to something unknown to everyone outside Honda. So, don't try to short these two on a 7th generation v6. But, if someone knows what #9 pin is suppose to be on the 7th generation v6 and isn't worried about being sued by Honda, please post it! ! ! ! ! !
A nice intro to OBD here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On-board_diagnostics
BLCKFLSH 09-04-2009, 02:04 PM I would probably either go to Advance, and let them read the codes, or break down and get a code reader myself. I'd hate to fry my ecu, trying to retrieve some code. I've only had one check engine light, and that was for the gas cap, so I haven't had the need for a code reader yet.
