View Full Version : What is the maintenance minder?
brianb 09-04-2009, 11:52 AM I am not familiar with this.
I gather that this is a way for the car to "tell" me when to change the oil, air filter, cabin filter, etc.
Where does this pop up? Will it show up near the spedometer? Is it a dummy light?
How do I reset it once I have changed the oil or whatever it is telling me what to do?
Are there codes or will it spell out what to do? Will it say "change oil" or will it say "xxx code".
Believe me, I tried to search for this. But when I search for "maintenance minder", I got tons of hits.
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the help.
nolefan32 09-04-2009, 02:02 PM With the 2004, I don't think you have a maintenance minder, they didn't get put in the Accords until 2006. But for those that have one, at certain intervals, mostly when it's time for an oil change, a wrench symbol lights up in the instrument cluster, and the speedometer switches to read a code telling how much life is left in the oil (it's triggered at 15 percent) and a code telling what sort of maintenance needs to be done. The codes are explained online at the Honda's Owners Circle site (https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/login.asp).
RTexasF 09-04-2009, 02:06 PM Your car, as mentioned, has a mileage tripped reminder to change oil.....that's it. The rest is up to you.
BLCKFLSH 09-04-2009, 02:15 PM Your Accord, if it's an 04, does not have the maintenance minder. I'm glad my 03 doesn't have it, because the intervals for some things are longer than I'm willing to go. 10k miles between oil changes? I don't think so.
lpaudio2 09-04-2009, 02:30 PM my MM averages about 5k between changes. Thats with about 50-60% highway.
I agree though. While based on a lot of science, it fails to account for my synthetic oil. So Its rather annoying more than anything.
brianb 09-04-2009, 02:52 PM Thanks everyone. I am glad to know I don't have one of those. I like to change more frequently than 10K miles. I was just wanting to know what to expect when I see it, and what do I need to do when I do see it.
hillstones 09-04-2009, 04:52 PM My '03 has the mileage interval reminders for oil changes. It is roughly every 7,500 miles. I don't really follow it, so I just reset it whenever it comes on. I service the car with oil changes every 5,000 miles or so, and do the routine recommended service at the major mile intervals.

I was just wanting to know what to expect when I see it, and what do I need to do when I do see it.Mine pops about every 5,000 miles, which is roughly when I want to do changes. The 10,000 miles a lot of people quote is the first oil change, which they do wait a little longer to allow the engine to break in, after that it's much more frequently, and based on your own driving style.

phunctional 09-04-2009, 07:04 PM im pretty sure its about 5,000 miles too,AND ALSO on driving style because mine just came on to 15% on the freeway a week ago while i was punching it lol

The Maintenance Minder tells you when you need to change your oil based on how you drive and the conditions. While it's true that some people might go 10k miles between oil changes, most will be notified to change it much sooner.
For instance, mine has been averaging about 5500 miles between oil changes.

As I stated before, there's nothing wrong with the Maintenance Minder System. It determines when the oil needs changing on how the car is driven and under what conditions... definitely more accurate than simply changing the oil at fixed intervals.
Many, many people have done used oil analysis and found that the MMS is very good at telling you when your oil is just about "worn out".
I've yet to see my MMS go even 7k miles between oil changes let along 10k. Like I said, it's all based on how you drive. If you drive 100% highway, you might see 10k miles between oil changes.

I drive 100% highway....my minder starts blinking around 8k...and stays steady on at 10k....I usually change the oil between 5-8k or before it starts blinking.
BLCKFLSH 09-05-2009, 06:55 AM So, you don't use the minder for oil changes? If you change the oil at 5k miles, do you reset the minder at that time?

Your Accord doesn't have the Maintenance Minder System. It simply has a Maintenance Required Indicator which is set to 10k mile oil change intervals.

If your Accord has the Maintenance Minder System (his doesn't), you can reset it early if you have the maintenance done early.
I do not think the Maintenance Required Indicator can be reset if it is not lit up.

I have the Maintenance Required Light..sorry for the mix up..but it is reset by the dealer when I bring the car in...it comes on every 8k or so. As long as I bring it in before 8k miles I don't see the light.
