The title says it all. Somebody hit my rear bumper with their car last night, and some of their red paint rubbed off onto it. We all know accidents happen, and I'm a very forgiving person, but whoever hit my bumper could have at least left a note. Oh well. It doesn't look too bad. There's a few scratches and a couple black marks. I don't have a camera to take the picture with, but I can say that you can cover the whole area by putting your hand over it. Anyway, how would you go about fixing a scratched bumper without taking it to the dealership or a body shop? My guess is to get the matching paint, buff out as much as I can, sand down the affected area, and apply the paint followed by a clear coat. Any suggestions?

buff it out as much as you can. chances are that it didn't get down to the plastic base of the bumper. if it did get down to the plastic base, use some spot paint that's sold by the dealer in small 5oz. bottles or w/e.

i had a similar situation when i first got my car. but, my car was moving and the guy that hit me didn't check his blind spot when merging over. i had white paint marks all over my car at the point of impact. however, some Mgwires (sp?) 3 step wax process over the affected area cleared up all the white paint from the other car's paint. luckily there wasn't any chipping that went down the the metal base.

Yeah you will. I think it might be my new neighbors that hit my car. I park alongside the street (perpendicular to the neighbor's car and well away from it to prevent these situations) since I don't have a parking spot for myself, but somehow these idiots probably hit my car since some (of their) red paint rubbed off onto my bumper. I'll look at their car tomorrow to see if I can find some of my paint on their car. I really don't want to seek revenge, but I did think about putting brake fluid all over their paint, lol. Then again, I wouldn't wanna start a fight or have any legal issues involved.

you could always slap some baloney on their car. provided stray cats or dogs dontt eat it, it will leave a greasy mess that will slowly deteriorate their paint.

muahahaha

Yeah, appreciate the advice. It just pisses me off that I got this car in February and now it's got this huge scuff mark. I have some Meguair's PlastX. Maybe that'll help.

Revenge everyone looses. However, I would knock on their door, introduce myself, explain my car was damaged; I would then ask if they saw the person that did it. Give them a chance to own up, or maybe the did actually see... you never know.

If the scratches are not too deep, the bumper cover can be overhauled and repainted. If you know of a good shop, tell them you are paying out of pocket and they will usually cut you a deal.

It sucks, but my car was vandalized twice when it was brand new. Karma will get those idiots some day. My car just got hit at my new job. Huge white paint transfer on the corner of my bumper because the moron didn't know how to back out of a space. Thankfully all the paint transfer wiped right off and I just have a small scratch in the paint, but not into the cover. Of course no note from the idiot that did it.

Problem is I don't know of a good shop. I'll probably find a DIY first, and if I screw up, then I'll take a shop and tell them I'm paying out of pocket.

Turns out my mom has a friend who owns a body shop and will teach me how to paint my car if I do all the work myself and buy the materials. Talk about hands-on experience!

i say you practice on some empty 2L bottles of soda first before you try on your own bumper!

kinda like that carpenter's rule, "measure twice, cut once"

Yeah, I might do that. The dude paints Ferraris for a living though, so he has top knowledge on painting cars. I'll be doing it in his shop. This will be a good opportunity to touch up on those bug stains on my front bumper, too.

This will be a good opportunity to touch up on those bug stains on my front bumper, too.

Try some Surf City Grime Destroyer or Poorboys Bug Squash on the front end. These are good products to have in your arsenal to easily clean up the mess on there now and in the future.

After washing use a clay bar on the front end to further remove tough splatters and mess. Then top with some quality polish Like Duragloss #105, Wetpaint glaze(theres a thread on here about it), or for otc some Nufinish.
