View Full Version : Cause of Breakdown?
Here's the deal, and maybe you guys will have a good idea of what is going on here...
I have a 2000 Accord LX sedan, 4 cylinder, Auto with just shy of 140k miles.
I was driving on rt 80 east in PA on Friday coming home for the weekend when the car began to smoke. There was no noticeable noise involved here though.
I pulled over to the shoulder, but an interesting note; as i was doing so, I stepped on the gas and the engine only revved, although it was still in gear, but then it readily went into park when I stopped.. Once stopped, I opened the hood to find that there was oil everywhere.
Now, I knew of a very slow leak occurring from somewhere behind my distributor, but routinely checked the levels and never had any problems with performance. I did notice a CEL right before shutting the car off, but I did not have one prior to the smoke.
If anyone has any idea what this may be, throw it out there. I'm pretty much at a loss and haven't had a chance to look at it since it was towed.

My first GUESS is that you have a tranny issue. Do you see/smell ENGINE oil? Or Tranny Fluid? :dunno:
You don't indicate WHERE the "smoke" was occuring. Out the tailpipe? Under the hood? Both? Some other answer?
If you have an AutoZone nearby, they will run a DTC (Diagnostical Trouble Code) check on your car, for FREE. With any indicated error codes, you can go from there. List of Honda Error Codes is posted elsewhere within the DA Forum.
cajun 09-07-2009, 07:30 AM Sorry to hear.
As Robert said, first determine if it's engine oil or trans fluid. Check your fluid levels. Try to find the source of the leak. Is the fluid pooled under the car, or was it thrown everywhere - maybe a leak near the belts?
Until you know you can keep fluids in the car probably not a good idea to attempt to make it to an auto parts chain to get the CEL read. Do you know someone with a code reader? Maybe Autozone or one of the others lets you rent a reader?

EXCELLENT points. Forgive my momentary lapse of good judgment! :notworthy :headbash:

Check ALL of the fluid levels in your car. Engine oil, tranny fluid, P/S fluid. If low, I suggest (as Cajun says) you DON'T drive it until problem(s) have been corrected.
And, you CAN rent a code checker (and most any tool) from AutoZone. I'm guessing around $10-to-$15.
Smoke:
the smoke was occurring from under the hood. I only saw engine oil, I never noticed any trans fluid. Same goes for the smell, I only smelled oil burning off.
Fluids:
I checked the oil level prior to leaving school and i was 3/4 of the way to the higher "dot" on the dip stick, when I pulled over I checked again and there was barely any on the stick at all. The oil was all over the left side of the bay and was also dripping under the car.
I don't have access to the car right now. My school is 2 hours from home and it broke down only about 30 miles into the ride. I don't have AAA, but a person I was with did have it, but it only covered 3 miles of towing, but having it brought back to the truck's shop is "free". So that's what I ended up doing.

Occurs to my mind that you have a blown seal and/or gasket. Oil pan gasket, oil pan drain plug, cam/crank seals, oil pressure sending unit, and the oil filter, itself, are the FIRST items to inspect.
SatinSilver 09-08-2009, 06:58 AM If it is a blown seal try to have the repair shop use oem(honda) seals. Usually they last a long time. You can prob. get them from:
www.collegehillshonda.com .
I'd prob. call them up directly or have the repair shop call them. The last thing you want is the repair place using some cheap overseas seals in there that may not last that long.

x2... i havent known oil pan drain plugs to go... but the oil pan gasket... but my bet is the cam/crank seal
