I would say "search feature is your friend..." but I don't think you could have found this thread unless you were around when it came about. Good luck

As a summary, most any dedicated snow tire will perform well, and a drastic improvement over any all-season tire (especially the stock S8's). Typical brands are Nokian, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Dunlop, etc. In NH, I've traditionally run Nokians, but they're pricey. This year, I'm running a set of Viking Stop 5000 winter tires imported from Europe. They were cheap ($67 US out the door) and have a tread design similar to the Nokian Hakka 2's - so we'll see how they work. www.1010tires.com is a web site out of western Canada that has a lot of reviews and a lot of different tires you can compare, so that'd be a start.

good luck - andy

Search might be good, but things have changed in the last year...

I had the Bridestone WS-50's and now the Michelin X-Ice.

WS-50's---Great in deep snow and good on ice. Downside is that they are louder than most snow tires, not perfectly smooth and wear quickly.

X-Ice are smooth, are no more loud than any other snow tire I've seen in action, last longer and do a good job in deep snow and are excellent on the ice---well, at least as good as you can be on ice

BTW---my X-Ice are on 16" steelies from Tire Rack.

How loud are snow tires compared to all seasons? I may be interested in picking up a set.

I guess my 3 choices are bridgestone WS 05, Michelin X-Ice or Nokians...

Now have to compare tread life and price... :paranoid:

Is all seaons good for snow? I mean last year it did snow 20''. Would I need Snow tires with FWD?

Take it for what it's worth, but Consumer Reports just did a test and the Michelin X-Ice was number 1. I think I paid $80/tire, plus the steel rim and some ugly hubcaps.

I found that last winter, the performance of the MXV4 S8 totally :thumbsdow ... I skidded while going 10 on a 10 deg incline... i find it unsafe... but that's my take..

[QUOTE=avexnsx]what size did you go for? if u dun mind me asking?

205/60/16...I just went to the basement and checked. We had zero problems with fit, noise, vibration, pulling etc. Put them on, drive and drive much more confidently.

I called around a few places, and one offered me 195/65/15, and the other 205/65/15... and this other guy even told me X-ice is not good for the Accord since it's a luxury car! :paranoid: anyway.... not really ready to drop $800 on tires and steelies yet anyway... let's see how long i can hold out...

$800 cracks? :jawdrop:

I looked at my receipt from the tirerack. $670 delivered for 4 tires, 4 steelies and 4 hubcaps. I'm not sure you can beat that for quality snow tires.

BTW---luxury car? :lmao: Family sedan is more like it. Have him read the reviews on Tirerack---these are meant for a "Family Sedan" or minivan that is looking for more confidence in the winter.

I say, mission accomplished.

Shumax -

What issue of CR is that? November 2005? My library only has the October 2005 and, according to it, winter tires haven't been reviewed in over a year. Any chance you could post/scan the rest of the results? Thanks!

Anyone here using Cooper Weather-Master S/T 2s by any chance? A local tire shop recommended them to me over the Blizzaks, Goodyears, etc. And, yes, they carry all those brands.

I've run 2 sets of Cooper Weathermaster S/T 2's - the first were a studded set for my son's 95 Saab 900S - they do great but are LLLOOOUUUDDD. The second set is (was) for my previous 2003 Pontiac Aztek - they were unstudded and not too bad sound wise - but I did notice that (even with TCS) that the front wheels spun much more than I would have liked.

So - they're not bad from a price/performance perspective, but others (with a slightly more "road contact patch" tread design) might be more forgiving when trying to accellerate out.

Those I've run successfully are Nokian Nordman 1, Nokian Hakka 2, Michelin Arctic Alpins - all not too bad.

This year I'm trying a set of European-spec Viking Stop 5000 snows that I got for a song from the local dealer. In trying to translate the reviews from Europe (they're mostly polish and danish) the sound like they're pretty good - but time will tell. They have a directional tread design close to the Nokians, but for about half the money.

Sorry... that's $825 CDN... i know... even with the exch rate, it doesn't work out to 800 for the price you paid... plus you get hub caps... but you know... if i ordered from tirerack, i'd have to pay duty, taxes, more taxes, install, blah blah blah... u know the story... :dunno:

hey... since ur from chicago, is there any good places to get cars stuff around the airport? the O'Hare one? I'll be going to Chicago in November, maybe I could get myself a small xmas gift...

Just to update this thread - I noted earlier that I was going to run a set of Viking Stop 5000 winter tires on the Accord. I got a set mounted to the steel accord rims and they've been sitting in my garage ever since.

In the interim, it's become apparent that my son's Saab may need to have some items worked on during the winter, so he'll be driving the accord periodically. And without tank-like winter tread on that car, I just KNOW what will happen. So I'm going to have the local dealer take back the Viking's I got and put on a set of studded Nokian Hakka 2's. If I were driving the car, I could get by with a less agressive tread. With him driving, it's my bumpers/rocker panel's I'll be saving for the extra bucks the Nokians w/studs will cost me.

good thing I left the Vikings in the garage with the stickers still on them - simple dismount and return to new stock for the tire dealer for full credit.

so, all 3 vehicles will have studded snows this winter - except the Pilot that will have the Michelin LTX M/S on it for its second winter...

this year, i am running mastercraft glacier grip II on all four corners of my car..... they're made by cooper, and are supposedly a highly rated tire..... the local shop in pittsburgh said that they were an excellent tire, and that they run them on their cars during the winter.... also, checked out consumer reports review of them; they are one of the best for severe winter conditions (deep snow)....... the blizzaks were rated #4, and the glacier grips #5.....

will keep you updated as to how they perform...... hopefully if we get enough snow tomorrow night and this week, i'll give a preliminary report...... ;) :)

btw, they only cost me ~$300 for all four, and that included mounting, balance, and sales tax (7% in PA)

Just today I got a set of 4 Viking Snow Techs mounted on a set of '04 EX V6 take offs. We'll see how they go since they're forecasting more snow for tomorrow and Monday night/Tuesday. BTW, I had to order the tires and they came in yesterday. The place opened at 8:00 this morning and the guy recommended I get there at 7:45. I arrived at 7:40 and was 12th in line! By the time they opened at 8:00, there was about 30 people in line and maybe 40 when I left at 8:20!

BTW, I bought the wheels from my Honda dealer who had them sitting in a back room collecting dust. I got them for just a little more than most eBayers are getting for shipping on a set of wheels and a little more than what a set of steelies and covers would cost. In fact, two of the wheels m still had the protective plastic still on them! :D

So, now I have a set of "nice" alloys for the summer tires and a sacrificial set for the winter tires! Since I'll be doing the summer/winter swap overs myself, I really wanted the lighter weight alloys!

Just got the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2. Haven't really tried them out in the snow yet since what we got a few weeks ago all melted. Hopefully they'll turn out good.
