View Full Version : A tribute to Mom
Effin Ponderous 09-23-2009, 04:28 AM I wanted to take a few minutes for a quick introduction. I helped buy this 02 Accord EX-L sedan for my Mom back in the spring of 2002. The day I delivered it was the most excited I ever saw her. Over the past few years her health worsened and she passed on September 2nd. The car is now in my possesion with a whopping 15,900 miles on it. I am a car fanatic and was looking for something new to spend my time on restoring or just tinkering with. I wasn't planning on an Accord, or anything surrounding it for that matter.
There was a very small garage at her house that she liked to keep her baby in, however her aim wasn't so good at times. She also had a rock wall on both sides of the driveway the crept in on her occasionally. The one time she left the car outside, there was a hail storm...in places it looks like someone had bounced a golf ball on it.
I brought the car to my local detailer who made her look as new as possible. Clay bar and wax makes the finish shine like new...if only there weren't all these other dings. I've ordered a factory front bumper cover as that was the only real damage that had to be addressed. I guess my goal is to bring it back as close as I can to new, but not sure where to go from there. Maybe keep it in the family for my three sons (ages 18, 16 and 14). My other vehicles now are an 08 Honda Ridgeline and an 07 Camry. My last three cars were a civic SI sedan, Subaru Legacy GT turbo, and an Infiniti G35 Sedan.
I've added a link to pics of her as I guess I haven't posted enough to put up photos; http://s469.photobucket.com/albums/rr58/effinponderous/accord/
Kidnice 09-23-2009, 05:26 AM I am so sorry about your loss. My condolensces to you and your family. It sounds like she barely used the car judging by the amount of mileages. I say you are on the right road in terms of renewing the vehicle in her honor, and keeping it within the family.
Post some more pics from time to time to see the progress of your work.
Take care.
Honda247 09-23-2009, 05:50 AM My condolensces to you and your family as well. Car looks good.

ElectricFuzz 09-23-2009, 06:30 PM I like your avatar.
Effin Ponderous 09-24-2009, 03:19 AM Thanks, it's my former Shiro. Got hit and totalled, but I'm looking for another.
cajun 09-24-2009, 04:53 AM Welcome to the site.
Very sorry to hear about your loss. I like your idea of passing the car to your sons. Always nice to have a link back to a loved one.

I like your avatar also. I remember when I was 16 and a NFL player moved in next door. The local Nissan dealer gave him the use of a silver 300Z as long as he would do appearances. He asked me to look after the house and feed the piranhas while they went on vacation. He said I could cruise around in the car during the evenings if I wanted. :D
He was giving me the instructions in the morning(including removal of t-tops) and as soon as they left I just had to take it for a spin around the block. As luck would have it they forgot something and returned while I was taking a spin. He was real cool about it and asked me how I liked it. Next time he was going to ask for a mt and teach me how to drive it.
searich07 09-25-2009, 04:58 AM Well you have a good memory of your MOM, and are taking care of that special Honda. Enjoy, Regards
Richard

I crashed mine too but didn't total it. Fortunately, it wasn't a Shiro. I can't believe you totalled one.
Effin Ponderous 09-29-2009, 03:17 AM I crashed mine too but didn't total it. Fortunately, it wasn't a Shiro. I can't believe you totalled one. I was t-boned by a guy going 50 mph. It took them 45 minutes to cut me out of the car. Bad day.
A&Fbro28 09-29-2009, 05:26 AM I bet your mom was as pretty and had as good of a hear as this car looks. You have a great pallet to dress your mom (the Accord) up nice and classy. She'll always be in your heart car or not but it will keep a very new and warm place in your heart while doing work or washing the car. Stay strong and know that this DA family will buttress you in any shape or form to help you.
Effin Ponderous 09-29-2009, 05:25 PM Thanks Des.

Any pictures?
Effin Ponderous 09-29-2009, 05:49 PM Any pictures?Unfortunately (or fortunately) not. It was back in 89
ElectricFuzz 09-30-2009, 12:48 AM How much did an SS cost back then?
Effin Ponderous 09-30-2009, 01:33 AM I leased it, but I believe sticker was around $21,000
Effin Ponderous 10-25-2009, 05:35 AM I replaced the front bumper cover recently as well as the left front splash tray (inside wheel well). There are a couple of scratches and some dings from the hail, but otherwise she is as perfect as I can get her. It seems to be harder than I thought to keep the car. Not sure what to do but we may end up selling it.
