View Full Version : Toyota FT-86 Concept--- Honda DESIGN team, take notes!!!
starbai 10-06-2009, 09:36 AM This is what honda should have been planning and eventually building, FOR YEARS instead of isolating and disgarding its enthusiast base.
Not to mention its freakin gorgeous. why can't honda design soemthing that looks like THIS?? SLEEK, DIFFERENT, AND STILL HOTT...
Instead we get shit like the new TL. grrr.
This car is going to rock, and theres nothing that Honda has thats even remotely close to as cool. The CR-Z WAS a step in the right design direction I think but then they threw that worthless hybrid crap in there and ruined it.
Sweet motor, RWD.... I wantttt :notworthy:banana:
Toyko 2009 Preview: Toyota FT-86 Concept brings back the Hachi-Roku (http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/06/toyko-2009-preview-toyota-ft-86-concept-brings-back-the-hachiro/)
Toyota's President Akio Toyoda has said the automaker is in desperate need of an excitement injection, and here's the first dose: the Toyota FT-86 Concept.
Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the '80s, the FT-86 concept was designed by the automaker's ED2 styling studio in France and bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back.
Since it's a "concept," Toyota hasn't divulged much about the FT-86 yet, but we do know it's powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four sending power to the rear wheels. Toyota focused on keeping the weight down to improve handling and, according to one source, the platform is unique to the concept. The engine sits lower in the engine bay to aid aerodynamics while keeping the center of gravity in check, and the overall dimensions of Toyota's new 2+2 are 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches.
After the FT-86 bows in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, the production model will be shown sometime next year with sales beginning sometime in late 2011 carrying a sticker price somewhere north of $20,000.

dominicstl 10-06-2009, 09:38 AM Damn! :jawdrop: That looks pretty hot. Are those zippers on the dash?
And you know, as much as I wanted an 09 Accord coupe for my first car once I got a job out of college, I apologize Honda and DA, but this is definitely on the top of my list now. I graduate in 2013, if these things go into production in 2011, I'll definitely put down the money for a used one in 2013
EDIT: The back looks a little like an RX7 almost with those tail lights;

Funny. The front made me think of an RX-8.
wardenr 10-06-2009, 09:47 AM To All:
I think the dashboard/instrumentation/interior-at-large SUX. :thumbsdow :(
The exterior is a super-slick redux of the Solara.
Grab ahold of a 'Yota? You're READY, Baby!
SatinSilver 10-06-2009, 09:49 AM Lovin the exterior. Not sure about a Subie engine though. :paranoid:

I know, I know, I know, but starbaiiii!!!!!! :jumping:
too much? lol
Osiris_x11 10-06-2009, 09:54 AM Interesting design, looks neat! The exterior of the concept almost looks production-ready, sans the rear diffuser (not commonplace on road-going/street cars, generally speaking) & front-bumper/hood-line angle & height (due to the need to conform to pedestrian-safety standards, both will likely be raised sadly). The interior will likely be noticeably different from the concept, once it's being produced (share components/materials/facades w/ other Toyota-stable vehicles).
Personally speaking, I need a proper center-console in any/all of my vehicles. That's a major turn'off of mine if one is lacking in the vehicle (ie. Fit/Civic/Insight/S2000 & this concept). It seems very down-market/economical to me otherwise to not have one.
There seems to be quite a bit of Lexus'es current "L-Finesse" design/style elements in this concept, along w/ many shared attributes/hallmarks of the LF-A concept supercar.
I'm a fan of well-built, well-appointed, well-engineered, compact market-segment coupes. My ideal daily-driver would be a coupe version of the Audi A3 platform. . .
uhohkaitlina 10-06-2009, 10:13 AM oOoOOOO. I like!

I think Ferrari has a similiar set up. :D

can't blame ya, if it were out now i'd probably have looked at it instead of the accord.
but thats based on exterior look only. its got to be optioned out at least as well as the accord coupe. if it was comparable in feature content to say a scion TC, i'd have to pass...
I'vej ust wanted a RWD 4cyl car that would take to mods like crazy, for a long time now... the only options were the S2000 (which i have but is very impractical) or old skool 240's
stevencrosbie 10-06-2009, 10:34 AM That thing will sell like hot cakes.
Miata what?
:D
They should slap a Celica badge on it and i think it would sell!
starbai 10-06-2009, 10:37 AM I think the FT-86 thing works nice in Japan, but agree that calling it a celica over here would seriously sell like crazy
BlueBlahBleh 10-06-2009, 10:40 AM Everything about the design of this car is making me drool, except for the "space invader" stick shift.

I agree, I don't want a "rice-away!" car like the tC can sometimes be :screwy:
And I also agree on the S2000, I love the car but it's not very practical. On the other hand though, I would definitely take this car once it comes out if, like you said, it is optioned out well, and if they work on that interior just a little bit.
They should slap a Celica badge on it and i think it would sell!
I agree. But that might make me not want to buy one because then everyone will have one :dunno:

+1  I'll take that BODY, with my '02 platform/drivetrain and interior.
Osiris_x11 10-06-2009, 11:21 AM The front-fascia/headlights, side-profile facets, rear-quarter/c-pillar & taillights are all straight from the original/early LF-A concept (which itself was later revised)...

I think Ferrari has a similar set up. :D... and it absolutely kills me! All the late-model mid-engine/V8 platform Ferrari's like the 360, F340, and forthcoming 458 Italia all have this center-console delete! Grrr... :D
Porsche used to do this as well (no center-console) on their 911 range, but they've had a proper center-console for the past two gen's of their Boxster (986/987) & 911 (996/997).
Also, the Lotus Elise & Evora lack a traditional quote/unquote center-console. . .

No center console on the Acura RSX Type S, either. hehe
Gosha 10-06-2009, 12:03 PM Pretty sick, id like to see the final product
Atomic Robot 10-06-2009, 12:09 PM +2 on the RX (front, for sure)
Turbocharged EJ20 engine from the WRX? The Subie boxer engines wind out really smooth power, but stay away from the EJ25- it eats head gaskets for breakfast!
Osiris_x11 10-06-2009, 02:18 PM No center console on the Acura RSX Type S, either. heheYusss! Good recollection. The outgoing Acura RSX had the Civic-style dash-delete-center-console. Nastyyy... :naughty: /jk
If the current Civic sedan had a proper center-console, I'd have given it strong consideration (vs. my '08 Accord sedan) as the Civic has reasonable/decent interior-space & similar performance as my Accord (LX A.T.). Wait, the front/side windows & a-pillar design of the Civic (and Fit/Insight) looks funny to me, so scratch that! :D
(My Accord is in-essence a people/grocery hauler by intent, which it does very well... reliably/dependably/comfortably, and even fun at times relative to it's contemporaries! Hence why I love it for what it is & what it does & how it does it.)

Furple 10-06-2009, 02:50 PM mmm DO WANT
MOAR!!!
ElectricFuzz 10-06-2009, 02:51 PM I saw this earlier this morning and thought it looked like a less ugly version of a GT-R.
GTFan712 10-06-2009, 02:56 PM Glad to see that Toyota has finally brought the AE86 back, and with a boxer engine.

Gosha 10-06-2009, 03:29 PM so any idea what kind of horse power this thing will have? being RWD as they say it should pack at least 200+. perhaps a turbo like similar to what genesis has? any thoughts on that?

220 -250 is the latest I have read but reports contradict each other. One says the deal is off between Toyo & Subie, the next says it's back on so :dunno: Why Toyo would build something this hot with a competitor's engine is beyond me.

The FT-86 won't be turboed, as long as they're sticking to tradition. (Original AE86 was NA.)

searich07 10-06-2009, 05:47 PM Ft-86, interesting concept but not production YET, and by production time, what will be left? Steering wheel is on right side, (english road driving drives me nutzy). Seats look a bit thin, air distribution system looks hokey, no idea of what is under hood, or specs???Regards
Richard
Gosha 10-06-2009, 07:14 PM if this thing get on the right track, I will get it. At this moment there arent any cars that interest me, g series, but too much money. Funny how i went from nissan to honda, and maybe soon toyota... Well see
