the 03 are not bad. They suffer a different transmission flaw however (Search). I would look for an 04 or newer at the least - those still may have AT issues. Or a MT and avoid the transmission problem entirely.

EDIT:
on an 03 > the radio may fail (lost backlight)
general > timing belt at 100k for the v6, valve adjustment, water pump < all should be done @100k
window regulators > quite a few people have noticed they need new regulators. THey start to make noises / grinding sound and go south from there.
AT problems (do a search)
check the rear brakes , they wear first

7th gen accord problems were related to a oil jet recall. Depending when it was done, and how often the fluid was changed will greatly effect life.

6th gen had clutch pack wear issues.

I cannot add much more about AT cars. I have never owned one.

Also check the AC and make sure it works. Some of the members have had road debris take out the condenser which sits below the radiator.

Other than the transmission there is no "huge" issue the 7th gen accords suffer from. its a honda after all.

on a 03 condition is very important, how has it been cared for? Body? Mechanicals? Are there records?

Incorrect. The oil jet kit was installed in my '03 at 12,000 miles in 2004. In 2008 with 52,000 miles, the transmission still failed. The oil jet kit did not solve the problem. Thankfully Honda replaced my transmission for free under their goodwill policy.

So to answer the OP's question, yes the 2003 Accord's with automatic are known to have a transmission problem. However, not all of them go bad.
