View Full Version : License plate and glovebox LED's installed!
EXL_ent_V6 11-07-2009, 02:34 PM I ordered them from Diode Dynamics (in the sponsor area) and installed the bulbs today. (I still have to replace my HID bulbs - that's a project for tomorrow)
Here's some small crappy pictures that I took with my cellphone (too cold to go back out there right now!) lol
They are white LED's and were a breeze to install. Took like 10 minutes for all of them. You guys like? I do...
The only bulbs that I still need to replace are my reverse bulbs... Maybe next week?
UPDATE!!!!!!!!! ALL 3 BULBS BURNT OUT IN LESS THAN A MONTH! Buyer beware!!! Do not buy these horrible bulbs from Diode Dynamics. I am returning my entire purchase, and I encourage you all to be warned when choosing this vendor. I have other interior LED's that have been working in my car since about a month after I bought it (so 2.5 years now) and not a problem. I was horrified that these bulbs blew so quickly.
WhosRich 11-07-2009, 02:43 PM Looks much better than the stock bulbs.
1OfManyNguyens 11-07-2009, 03:00 PM Looks good. I didnt really see the point of switching plate lights but seeing everyone doing it is making me change my mind.

Damn straight!
ntextreme3 11-13-2009, 06:01 AM which kit from diode dynamics was that? I was about to order this week, but wasn't sure which one to pick. I planned on stage 3, but didn't want to over-do it. I like the ones you picked though
EXL_ent_V6 11-14-2009, 08:55 AM Stage 2
LFSoccer2k6 11-14-2009, 02:17 PM i have stage 3 and love it.
vasekvi 11-15-2009, 07:46 PM Looks real good. I have always wondered what the 7.5 gens looked like under there to do the license plate bulbs.
The 03-05 only has one bulb. This is how I did mine.

EXL_ent_V6 11-16-2009, 01:03 PM That LED looks nice! I probably would have done something similar if I only had one bulb, not two.
Yeh I did the glove box one late... I've had all the other interior bulbs done a month or so after I leased the car...
sspao82 11-18-2009, 04:50 PM looks good! i especially like the one in the glove box.
hillstones 11-18-2009, 06:21 PM My Stage 2 lights are on their way, for the license plate, glove box, and interior lights! Also ordered from Diode Dynamics. After installing my Eagle Eye LED Tail Lights, I realized I needed LED lights in the License Plate too because the stock bulbs look terrible along side the bright LED tail lights....especially when locking and unlocking the door. The LED tails flash instantly, but the license plate with the standard bulbs flash after the tail lights do because the bulbs take longer to illuminate. So I figured I might as well get the kit and do LEDs all around.

hillstones 11-21-2009, 06:01 PM Installed my Stage 2 LEDs from Diode Dynamics. Keep in mind that the camera is not using a flash so it is letting in a little more light to compensate. So the LEDs are not that blinding to the eye. But the camera did capture the actual lighting pretty well. The glove box is equally illuminated, but didn't take a picture. Of course they do look better in real life. Definitely worth it! The license plate now flashes at the same time as my LED tails when I lock and unlock the car.

They are white LEDs. Here are some blue LEDs. You will see that blue LEDs are a very deep blue.

My other whip???
Well my next project is upgrading the map lights and dome light. After I installed the "Stage 2" kit, I realized I should have done a custom order. The Stage 2 kit includes a 6-LED board for the trunk so I experimented and installed it in the Map and Dome light just to see how it looks. I like the extra brightness, so I am returning the LED bulbs currently in my map and dome light and swapping the map lights with two 6-LED boards and the dome with a single 12-LED board. The doors, glove box, trunk, and license plate LEDs will remain the same. I am waiting to receive the new lights and I will take new pics once they are installed.
Those LED lights look so VIP!!!!:notworthy
bettyv 12-02-2009, 06:46 AM The lights look awesome did you install them yourself? and how much did the whole thing cost
hillstones 12-03-2009, 05:57 AM The lights look awesome did you install them yourself? and how much did the whole thing cost
$35.99 for the Stage 2 Kit at http://www.diodedynamics.com
Yes, installed them myself. Very easy to do. Use a small flathead screwdriver to remove the interior lens covers and change the bulbs. Glove box light is accessed by dropping the glove box door by unclipping the arm on the right side, then squeezing the sides of the glove box inward. Trunk light comes out of the holder with the push of a finger. License plate lights are described in another thread in this forum.
I am returning the dome and map lights for a refund and waiting for the 12-LED board for the dome and two 6-LED boards for the map lights. I am keeping the other bulbs the same.
vasekvi 12-03-2009, 06:26 AM You can also go to Autozone and PepBoys to get these. Pilot makes a 12 and 15 diode kit to go into interior housings. I have yet to do my doors still.

Good information to know. Based on your photos, those boards look like the "flux" style board. Diode Dynamics sells those as well, in addition to the newer SMD boards which are brighter and use less LEDs. They are also more expensive too, but Paul at Diode Dynamics says they are more reliable than the flux style LED. I never looked for them locally, I bought from Diode Dynamics after reading the positive reviews and Paul's excellent service. I was reluctant to buy any from eBay since most are out of the country. Any choice of LED board would be better than the standard light bulb. The white LEDs look so much nicer than the dull amber bulbs.
hillstones 12-06-2009, 01:15 AM I got the replacement LEDs for my dome light and map lights. The stage 2 kit included the 31mm 2-5050 SMD LED light, which includes two LEDs in a 31mm bulb housing. I wanted more brightness, so I am sending those back for a refund.
Here is what the 31mm 2-5050 SMD LEDs looked like in the Dome light. These are included in the Stage 2 kit from Diode Dynamics. These are the lights that are installed in the earlier post, of the night photos.
http://web.me.com/peter.hillman/Site/photos/dome1.jpg
Here is the LED Board 12-SMD. Twelve LEDs instead of two LEDs. Much better.

I will have to take some night time shots later. So here is what I have installed from Diode Dynamics:
License Plate: 194 1 Watt LED (Quantity 2)
Map Lights: LED Board 6-SMD (Quantity 2)
Dome Light: LED Board 12-SMD (Quantity 1)
Trunk Light: LED Board 6-SMD (Quantity 1)
Door Lights: 194 5-5050 SMD (5 LED Bulb) (Quantity 2)
Glove Box Light: 194 1 Watt LED (Quantity 1)
It is the Stage 2 kit, except the Map and Dome lights have been swapped out for the LED Boards. The 6 board is a great fit in the Map lights and the 12 board is perfect for the dome. I would highly recommend this combination.
nadram 12-06-2009, 02:14 AM MUCH nicer than the lame yellow bulb, and definitely nicer than the 1 or 2 LEDs....
i REALLY want this. Today :D
Tasteful stuff guys. Thx for all the pics

I am looking at getting some from pepboys like you

The kits come with various sizes of dummy bulbs. The 9 diode board sells for 14.99 and the 12 diode board sells for 17.99.
hillstones 12-06-2009, 08:53 PM Since we are on the topic, I thought I would post the pics of my 2008 Honda Element with LEDs I just installed from Diode Dynamics. The front map lights have the LED Board 6-SMDs and the two dome lights have the LED Board 12-SMDs. The Element only has the center dome light illuminate when the front doors are opened. The map lights in the Element are manual operation only. So having the LED Board 12-SMD makes a huge difference over the dimly lit light bulb. When the rear hatch is opened, both dome lights illuminate. The LED Board 12-SMD really lights up the cargo area very well. I also added the license plate LEDs too. I wish I had known about these LED lights sooner. Really adds a nice touch to any vehicle.

hillstones 12-07-2009, 09:31 PM So back to my Accord, here are the newly installed LED Board 6 SMDs in the map lights, and the LED Board 12 SMD in the dome light. So the map and dome lights are essentially equal, 12 LEDs in the front and 12 LEDs in the rear.
Yes, this is much nicer than the previous LEDs I had installed.

Where you get your license plate lights from
vasekvi 12-09-2009, 06:36 PM You asking me? I got them at Autozone.
I only wanted to use one bar for my car and the other bar for my wife's car, but the wiring did not allow them to separate. Plus my wife's electronic trunk release would have gotten in the way anyway.
The lights have three wires. Ground, and one wire for Knight Rider back and forth effects, and the other wire for solid light. I of course chose the solid light route.

Leave the battery connected. You need power to determine if you have the polarity correct for the LED lights to work. If they don't light up, flip the bulb around and they'll work. You won't mess anything up.

Do they come in Blue?
I just installed my LEDS for dome, ceiling, trunk, license, side doors all blue from Superbrightleds.com but they dont seem to satisfy me that much well the reason for that is not bright enough and i love the two bar LEDS for the license plate but i want them in blue. Another question is how you get those LEDS boards to stick on the dome, map lights?

Use double-sided tape. Blue LED lights in your license plate will probably get you pulled over pretty fast. You might want to check your local laws first, before you do that. You can get better (brighter) LED lights from Diodedynamics.com. They sell red, blue, and white LEDs.
nadram 12-13-2009, 10:38 AM That's the problem here... in general blue LEDs will always look darker than white ones
If you really want to stick to blue, try and find something with a greater amount of lights but that would still fit given your space restrictions
I really wish i could suggest some brand but i got nothing
A lot of the members here seem to recommend diodedynamics - look them up

Insert a small flat screwdriver at the front edge by the sunglass holder and gently pry down. Do the same at the back edge closest to the windshield and gently pry down. You will unclip the lens cover and pop it out.

I think you mean the 194s? The license plate/glove box bulb replacements? Nothing is perfect in the world and sometimes things fail. He doesn't make them, he is just a vendor that sells them. They do seem much higher quality than the cheap ones on eBay. So far, his service with me has been impeccable. I bought the ones for the Accord first, then bought some for my Element, and then decided to send the map/dome lights in the Accord back to exchange for LED boards. His service was exceptional and quick to refund my money when he received the ones that I returned.
So far mine have been in for 6 weeks without any problems. Yeah, it bites when things don't work, but he does a great job on helping you out when that does happen. Think of the hassle you would get if you bought them on eBay or in a store? After 30 days, typically no return.

Just pop the grilles off the rear deck. Release the clips from inside the trunk also makes it easier (in case anyone else comes across this thread).
