View Full Version : Is this possible?

Suppose I want to keep the '04 EX (no Navi) Head Unit stock with these exceptions:

1. An amp of roughly 50-75 watts per channel X4 morphed into the stock head unit and maintain all functions.

2. Replace ALL speakers with better super efficient ones, tweeters included.

3. A small sub such as the Infinity BassLink installed with crossovers to remove the bass from the other speakers so the sub handles all the bass.

For the professionals that do this daily, is this a possible deal?

yes and no. The amp will be separate from the main headunit, in the trunk or underseat.

Absolutely.

Yes. I installed the basslink and it works wonderfully. The crossovers I haven't done yet but I have it tuned basslink that the bass is only halfway up on the other speakers. It sounds deeper and smoother from basslink but I still want a little bass from the doors.

Check out the JL CleanSweep, it basically turns the headunit signal into something that's suitable to feed into an aftermarket amp.

If I were you I'd probably leave the tweeters there and just put front component speakers in somewhere.

Benji,

I don't understand your statement:

I got the part on leaving the tweeters alone but what do you mean by the rest of the statement? I'm not being a bonehead, I just didn't catch what you meant. Please explain.

Been there before, I understand that part. The last two cars had the amp under the driver's seat. I'm concerned with sound loss hooking up the stock HU with an aftermarket amp in spite of upgraded speakers.

Components/3-ways come with a tweeter...the speaker *should* fit in the original mount in the door, but you'll have to cut a hole somewhere in the door panel or otherwise mount the tweeter somewhere up front. My original wording wasn't very clear, sorry. I have a feeling you know all this stuff already

Oh, I got it now (duh on my part). Actually I was thinking more about replacing the original speaks with two ways that will be a direct fit. Kicker has some very efficient speakers, 6X9's & 5 1/4's that bolt right up.

I may just try the speaker upgrade first to make the most of the current 30 watts per channel and give it a listen.

Sound loss? If the speakers you replace the OEMs with are at the same impedance, there shouldn't be any loss.

You are considering using a separate sub so getting a speaker tuned for the doors is a minimal concern, since the tuning is mainly for lower frequency (bass).

If you are going all out like this, I would recommend a speaker more optimized for midranges rather than the full range speakers we have in the doors now. Ditto for the rear shelf. A crossover will merely enforce the rules, but the speakers will play by them.

The OEM headunit, IMO, is more than capable of providing adequate power for midrange and highs. Just add a sub and you'll be all set.

Basslink made a HUGE difference between the OEM system and what it sounds like now. It doesn't rattle windows but it sounds like a completely different car.

I would actually recommend a sub upgrade first before you go beyond that.

What type of music do you listen to typically? That would factor a lot in your decision.

Use Infinity Kappa's and there basslink to start Tex. I bet you will love it. Then amp it up if needed.

Polk Audio and MB Quart make some nice speakers also. And are easy to power.

I like polk! Replaced my front, center and surround kenwood speakers at home with polk RTi's. Made the system sound 1000% better.

EXLNAVI,

Does your car have the 120 or 180 watt system?

Our current home system is in bad need of a upgrade. I down sized everything many years ago cause I was ruining the house. Ive owned most of the polk monitor series and the sta's.

We have a sony es reciver, dvd, cd, and vcr then polk m4's front, m3's rear and a cs100 center. M&K MX100 sub with a proscan 32" tv. Works out well. But getting long on the tooth.

Wonder what the nomial imp. is on the Accord none navi and navi head unit? If it would handle 4 or 2 ohm speakers that would help alot with getting the most out of it and keeping it stable. If its more comphy at say 6 ohms. that will suck.

120. Only the EX V6 coupes came with 180 watt in 04 I believe...

The upgrades mine are gonna get for now are HDTV and HD DVR. Most likely a DLP.

Currently I have a Kenwood VR407 receiver, the polk speakers, 5 DVD changer, SVHS VCR (hardly ever used) DirecTV+TiVo, Sony tape deck (hardly used) Home Theater PC, PS2 and XBOX. TV is a cheap Philips 27 inch but it's pretty good for a standard def.

Yes, I have. Without an efficient exhaust system (APEXI World Sport) it's only reached half of my goal.

It is much smoother across the board, I'm quite pleased so far but there is more to be had.

Actually I would love to have a custom Whipplecharger set up. Only a lottery hit away from it! :D
