View Full Version : Very impressed with V6! (yet another mpg thread)
SSMV6 11-06-2005, 04:43 PM Just came back from my trip to NYC. I drove 446.5 miles on 13.209 gallons of gas for an average of 33.8mpg with 98% highway miles! While getting there, I went at night so traffic was less than when I was coming back. I tried to limit my speed to 70mph and only used light throttle going uphill. Coming back this afternoon, I floored the car twice (once to get onto the parkway from a stop sign and once to get around a Dodge Colt that cut me off twice), averaged a higher speed (about 75-80mph and hit 95mph once) and stopped a few times during the busy merges and tolls. If I restrained myself a little more on the trip back then I would definately be able to pull 34+ mpg (I4 territory)!  I tried to restrain myself, but I was tired and cranky. :blah:
Anyhow, I'm extremely impressed with the mileage I get from the car on the highway since I was expecting to get only about 31mpg! The car was very smooth on the highway, too! At one point I was effortlessly doing 80mph and I didn't realize it until I checked on the speedometer (I thought I was going 70mph). Now if only I can get over 23mpg regularly, then I'd be even happier! Can't have the best of both worlds, but it still feels good to have the best of one. :D
EXLNavi 11-06-2005, 06:22 PM Very good. Glad to hear you're back safe.

I can emphathize: Recently, between Yuma and Gila Bend, AZ - - - and making a real effort for four-cylindro territory - - - I covered 107.1 miles on 2.724 gallons over flat desert on Interstate 8. 2200RPM(65), cruise, no AC with fuel stops (first click) right next to the freeway...........
...this is the best engineered vehicle I've ever owned.
best, ez.........
KJW73 11-07-2005, 05:47 AM Drove to Philly (85-mile trip one way) last week on the PA Turnpike and then the Schuylkill Expressway (which, BTW, wasn't bad at all on my way there) - only used 1/2 tank of gas roundtrip and averaged 30.5 miles per gallon.
Lots better than the 19 or so I get driving around here in stop-and-go-traffic at all times... :D
SSMV6 11-07-2005, 07:01 AM I'm especially psyched to see 30+ mpg since I haven't seen that for 5 years! The most I've gotten on the Civic was 30.xx mpg and the Camry was 31mpg! Being able to do almost 34mpg with two extra cylinders and 110 more hp than the Camry made me extremely impressed!
Very good. Glad to hear you're back safe.
Thanks, Ryan. It was a fun trip even though I didn't do much. :) Couldn't believe how much traffic was on the Pike compared to NY/CT though. There's usually way more cars on I-95/91.

That is impressive!!!! :notworthy :)
kelvinjai 11-07-2005, 09:03 AM Hi.. I am a new Accord Owner (03 EX AT) and got confused here. I thought the mpg for our cars is 20/30? I just drove my car for 2 tanks so far. I don't have navi to do the mpg calculation but what I observe is I have about 26mpg (50/50 city/hwy). Does it sound alright?
SSMV6 11-07-2005, 09:18 AM The V6's are rated at 20/30, but that's just the mid-range of the EPA figures. If you look at the sticker, it actually says range of 14-26 city and range of 24-36 highway or something like that in fine print.
26mpg mixed city/ highway is actually very good already! I get about 20-22mpg with 60% city driving. Normally I don't drive the car far enough to start getting the better gas mileages. The 33.8mpg I got this time was a result of my slow and steady driving, lack of traffic for most of the way and overinflated tires. I had them pumped up to 40psi. The last time I went, I only had 1200 miles on the engine, 32psi tires and didn't drive as conservatively so I only got 29mpg. Case and point is, if I could do it, then anyone can. There are others who could push their V6's to 37mpg! I am far from being a conservative driver, but I did learn to be more patient and try to be less aggravated by other drivers over the years. :)
jmillerLXV6 11-07-2005, 10:25 AM I'm glad others are getting 30+, too. Back in May, I headed out on a road trip a week after I bought my LX V6 and got 33 mpg doing a steady 8-9 mph over the speed limit (74-78, depending on the state). I was so shocked I thought my math was off. :)

Thanks for the info.. I thought 20/30 are the max numbers! :D Nice to hear that our car can do 30+ When we can't do anything to the gas price, I guess we can only rely on our cars :paranoid:
EXLNavi 11-07-2005, 11:07 AM My experience has been that the highway driving estimates for MPG are conservative whereas the city MPG is exaggerating.
But then again, when they were thinking "city" driving, they probably weren't thinking "New York City". :lmao:
SSMV6 11-11-2005, 09:07 AM I just remembered I got the miles driven off trip A which I resetted after driving back to my house from the gas station. The actual miles driven should be 450 mile which brings my mpg rating to a cool 34.07mpg!
silveraccord 11-14-2005, 04:54 AM For a 3 litre to have 244 HP plus almost 30 mpg highway is amazing. Honda always does there homework. I just traded in a 03 accord v6 coupe for an 06 V6 sedan. Realy don't feel the extra 4 hp but both cars are totally diffrent.
