Well this is a ahocker. Something went wrong on one of my Hondas! How could this happen it's a...a... a Honda!

The cruise control has 'lost' control on my '95 Accord! I set it at 120 kph as I always do on my 45 min commute to work and it is stuck in acceleration mode. I though something was frozen (it was below -20 C) but after a long drive it was still a problem. It is still a problem today. The button isn't stuck (as for as I can see) so it must be something internal.

The even more wierd thing is that when I let it accelerate without disengaging the cruise it suddenly dropped on its own and decelerated rappidly to about 110 kph and started all over with the acceleration.

Very strange and frustrating. Anyone hear of such a thing? Any ideas on a fix? Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to repair?

Thanks

Mike

I had that happen on my late and great '95. It normally happened when I hit set or resume in weird situations, such as uphill or downhill. It only happened a few times, so I figured it was just an extra electric charge that got sent through the system. I could never get it to happen on purpose, it just did sometimes. So if you can repeat the outcome over and over, my guess is your cruise control has gone bad. We had that happen in a few of our American cars before we learned the Japanese way.

My '02 V6 does something very similar (110 kph is about 57 mph, right?)

See here:

still does it (as of 20 Oct 2006) and it's worse in the cold.

Mine will /slowly/ accelerate until I hit the 'slow down' button, at which point it accelerates MUCH more rapidly...

Sounds like a problem with the actuator (the little motor that moves the throttle). May need to swap it out with a new one. Not sure how to test this, I would guess that if it were a problem with the controller you might see a continuing voltage increase on the terminals if it thought it needed to speed up.

Based on recent road stat reports here in the UK, most accidents here are now being caused, not by speed, but by drivers lack of concentration on what they are actualy doing, so maybe you are safer not using your cruise control?? :dunno:

Personaly I only use the cruise option when in temporary slow. (usually 40 mph) "timed speed camera zones" (usual when road works are being carried out on our motorways over quite a few miles) wherin the first camera records your cars time in, and the next camera records your cars time over the distance between the two cameras and works out your ave speed.. uhh ohhh lol.... The cruise means I don't have to constantly read my speedo, so I am free to attend to my driving, erm and other peoples!! lol.... :paranoid:

check the buttons....could be something as simple as a stuck resume button, which wouldn't show up with each start of the car until you used the cruise control the first time

A story about CC on a mid to late 80's Accord....

The problem was as you described.... getting stuck on accelleration.... it was the actuator, which wasn't in stock. He took the car home while waiting for the part to come in.

As soon as he left he decided to use his MALFUNCTIONING CC!! It got stuck big time! He came back having to ride the brake the whole way, wheels squealing... pulls into the shop & as soon as he did the melty hot wheels dropped the hubcaps, then dumped out all the brake fluid. If he'd been on the road just a few more seconds he would've made the news!!

So be careful when dealing with a broken CC!

If one gets stuck, turn off the car as you roll to the side of the road & have it towed!! :)

Sounds like natural selection at its finest! ;)
