This is our long coat chihuahua, Limmie. He's 7 years old now. We also have 2 corn snakes, Charlie (common) & Al (don't remember the sub-type, but it started with an 'a') Cnarlie is shades of brown & Al is black & gray.
When have a pond in the backyard with gold fish, they aren't named.
Last year we lost our best buddy, Malo. He was a mutt, mostly black lab & Austrailian shep. He water skied! (well, knee boarded) He whined if we went in the pool without him! He was 100lb. & thought he was a lap dog!
Limmie also loves water. He has also been pulled behind the boat.
Anybody else want to share their pets?

We just adopted a new baby! He's a 6 week old Border Collie. We prefer to get dog #2 while we still have #1, so he can help us train the pup. The new one's name is Bitzer. An Aussie term for bad guy or mongrel. Our last fewr dogs were all named bad/criminal in various languages.
Malo, spanish
Mauve`, french
Schlimm, german
Bitzer, Aussie slang
So far this one's a black & white fur ball. I'll post pictures later......:)
Two Golden Retrievers, Cooper & Kaiya.

cuties! how'd you get the pictures to go on?? It hasn't brrn working for anyone else!!
Use the "IMG" button tool when you post. You place the URL address of the picture in the tool that pops up when you hit the buton. It formats the html code for you.

I'm glad that worked for you.... but I don't know the URL address.....so I still can't do it. Wardsweb has been working on fixing the problem we have with putting on pictures & also the "reader" stuff for the bulletins. Most of us haven't been able to put anything but words on for a couple of weeks now. If I could, I'd be putting a bunch of stuff I have for the "older" Accords..... Hopefully it will get fixed soon!
The test in "factory direct" is where you can see the problem. It didn't make the file to see & when he tried to put a picture on it was blank..... last I knew he was going to do an update, but I don't know if it was done & didn't fix it or if it hasn't been done yet.
When I try to put in a picture it tells me it's not JPG, even though it is. When I put in a bulletin it says something's missing.....
Such is life......
The URL is just the web address, the http://www.hereis the picture.com. i did not upload so much as link to a picture that is already out there on the web.

mmm...only fish for me. Dogs and Cats too much trouble.

fish can be "trouble" too! We had a 55 gal tank for years! Luckily it didn't need cleaning often, but boy when it did it was WORK! Even seen or had an Anableeb? (sp?) They are the 4 eyed fish. The are surface swimmers & keep one set of eyes above the water & one set below. We had one that we trained to accept his little shrimp by hand (on a tooth pick). He would sometimes jump out through the charcoal filter though. I think that ended up being how we lost him. Didn't find him in time....
Chloe is sure a shiny dog! Looks all buffed like a car!
The pup (Bitzer) we got has finally taken to sleeping all night. (10-5:30) He's going on his first road trip today. We're heading to Fresno to deliver presents to the kids that couldn't come up here fro Xmas. Keep your fingers crossed that he handles it well. I don't want any puppy poopies or the like on my leather! We'll take a carrier, but he'll probably ride on my lap.:sorry:

I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!....or something like that. It's not like losing a pet is a big deal. They're just pets, after they're dead they go in the backyard somewhere :D

I was just trying to make a funny. Losing a pet IS a big deal, no matter what kind! I was quite upsetwhen my snake died! She was too young to give birth, but nature took it's course anyway & she didn't make it. I'm not fond of fish, but I have a 6 inch gold fish in my pond. It was born there! We started out with just feeder fish that grew & grew, they multiplied. This is that last one form that bunch. Possums got some. One was "fished" out by my grandson when he was 3. He'd sat & watched a fishing show on TV with an uncle & decided try it for himself. I was NOT a happy camper! I'm not into birds or rodents. Yet when I found a baby bird I scooped it up without touching it & passed it on to a friend that likes them. Today I'm off to the vet. Our new pup is sick. He has the squirts & won't eat or drink. I need to know what's wrong. We've already become very attached to him! He's showing signs of being a smart dog even though he'll only be 7 weeks tomorrow!!
I didn't mean to be rude with my comments about your fish.

Nah you weren't being rude. Really though a pet is that big a deal? I dunno we became attached to them but it wasn't like really sad when they died hehe. Never had a dog though, only fish, could be why I'm never sad when they die :D

I think if you put a bunch of attention into a pet, even a fish, it would be upsetting.... or at least frustrating.... if you lose them.
I raise a monarch butterfly when I was 9. I didn't know they had a short life. I'd caught the catapiller, fed it, watched it make it's crystalist, was there when it came out. It had a defect on it's wing. I let it go at school. Then on the way home, hours later, it landed on me & came home with me. It fluttered around the house. Then I found it dead a few days later. :bawling:
I used to tell my kids the same story, but changed it to a dinosaur. The name seemed to change everytime I told it. They laugh about it now. You know to kids, all parents are OLD! "crypt keeper".:D
I'm glad that I didn't come across as rude. It wasn't how I meant it. Sometimes the thoughts in the head don't translate well in words.
Happy New Year!:)

Musta been cool to raise a butterfly, wish I could!
princess
12-31-2003, 07:35 PM
If you ever decide to try, make sure you have plenty of the type of plant that you find the catapillar on! They eat a lot!
I'm surprised you're home! Not out whooping it up. We aren't really party people, so we didn't make any plans. Then to make the night even more fun when attempting to replace the "washers" in the tub's faucet the part in the wall fell apart. So we were rushing around to buy new stuff an hour before everything was closing so we'd have water in the house!
Such fun!!!

Not much of a party person either. I find that people in my area are such jerks that there are really only a few people I actually want to be friends with. I don't drink and drive, and I try to hold my diet (280lbs is plenty enough for a 6'2" 16 year old haha) so party is kinda pointless haha. I'm just sitting here doing history homework like I've been doing for the past what 4 days....and more to come haha oh well it ain't so bad.

BB, hope the studies went well.
This puppy has sure been a challenge! He's getting more & more energy! When all of his toys are out he'll opt for chewing on my fingers or a book or anything else! He's a brat!
Now at 8 weeks he comes to his name, does his business outside, goes to the back door to let us know, heads for his crate at nap time, knocks his dish around if it's low on water, travels well.....
The chihauhau is starting to accept him more & will play with him.

Puppy update:
He has added some brains! We hide a favorite chew thing & he had to figure out how to get it. We did it 3 times, to prove to ourselves that it wasn't a fluke. He's going to be outsmarting us before too long. I think next weekend we'll be adding another set of double gates so he can't get to the boat & big toys. I have this fear of seeing him eat the tires right off the trailer!
He also gets limp & settles down when told....even when he's stoppped in mid play. I read this is rare for his breed! (border collie)
On a sad note. My biggest gold fish out in the pond died today. It was the last one born in the pond. I won't be getting more until Spring.
princess

Another pet update.....
Good news! The fish was playing possum! He's up & swimming again! He was laying on the bottom flat when I thought he'd kicked off. The next day (I was going to remove him) & there he was swimmng under the lily & then the little water fall! I'll still add more this Spring. He looks lonely.
The puppy has added sit when he's getting his leash on, drop it when play tug of war with a toy & is playing nicely with the chihauhau. They are about the same size now. I fear our medium size dog is going to be a big dog! He's 9 weeks now.
He now has free run of the back yard, the new gate is up to protect the boat & big toys.

Princess,
I had a book when I was raising my puppy that really helped out alot. It is called Art of Raising a Puppy, ISBN: 0316578398, By The Monks of New Skete. You can find it on B&N for cheap, and it goes week by week and tells you what to expect. etc.... Tells you about all theimportant stuff your puppy is going through .

Uvman, Thanks for the info. We went out a bought one specifically on border collies. They're a bit different. There's lots of jokes about them being smarter than their owners! These are the "freesbie dogs", black & white. I see them in tons of commercials. They'll herd kids & cats & other dogs. That's what they were bred for. It's been fun raising him for this past month! They do get bored easy & if that happens, they'll get destructive. We're hoping to avoid that! Unfortunately there isn't a standard in size. This guy's mom was a nice medium size dog....but everything I feed seems to over grow!! Our last mutt was black lab & aust. shepperd. He was suppose to be an 85 lb. dog. He ended up a 100 lb. dog! The Chihuahua is supposed to be no more than 6 lb. At his trimmest, he's 8.
BB, my fish isn't sick. He was apparently just playing with me! He looks fine now. He has survived the pond freezing over & since he's the last one that was actually born in the pond, I'd hate to lose him. I do want to get him some buddies. I usually just get a bunch of feeder fish. As they grow they sometimes get pretty.

Almost lost the puppy today! He fell into the pool without being noticed until he had managed to get out! He had some hyporthermia & was pretty shocky. I gave him some sugar water for the shock after getting him all dry. His little pads were white instead of pink! After about 30 minutes he was fine. Whew! That was scary!! I'd been watching him carefully to make sure I'd know if he fell in. Unfortunately today I had a couple of grandkids here & they were playing noisily & we put in a new patio door with double pane glass.....I didn't hear a thing! I feel do awful about it! Good news is that he did made it out on his own!
He's now 12 weeks & 12 pounds.
Whew! Glad he's ok P.
Cats and dogs can normally find their way out of a pool, it may just take awhile.
But what really burns me are the numerous stories you hear down here about children/toddlers drowning in backyard pools. They interview the parents and they say stuff like:
"I only took a short nap, and when I woke up...."
or
"I didn't think they would find their way to the pool"
Hello... do these people have no common sense?!
IDIOTS ... people like that have no business having kids, or watching anyone else's.
Sorry for the rant... we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. :D

I agree. Rant on!! I have equal feelings about the parents the let their kids roast to death in cars!
When our first grandchild was born we added special locks to both the screen & the patio doors. By the time the kids can reach it they understand the rules. We have a new door with a slightly different type of frame & are desperately trying to find a locking system for the screen. Being new the little guys can't slide it yet, but we will not depend on that. It will get something added in the next week or so.
Even attended toddlers fall in, but at least you're there & can just grab them out. In the Summer we put a little wading pool in the shade of the gazebo so they play there a little more freely.
Thanks. The pup needs to be able to go out alone. Last night he insisted on being escorted the first few times he went out. Today he's back to normal. We don't have room to add a fence around the pool or we'd just do that. If the house hadn't come with the pool, it would have been located differently. It's too close to the house. The yard is sort of a big "u". A third being the pool area, a third lawn, plants, gazebo & the last third is cemented for the RV pad, where the boat is parked. I would've had the pool where the lawn is & the lawn where the pool is had I designed it.
I was sooooo scared that I'd lose the pup from shock yesterday! Today he's back to chewing on my toes as I go by. Following me like a shadow & getting into whatever he can! We really like his personality!! He stops at the edge of the tile when the little guys are here. He supposed to stay in the family room & kitchen areas, but we have not used a gate. I do have to squirt things with bitter apple sometimes to keep him from chewing stuff he's not supposed to.

The pup is now 16 weeks old. He will be losing his puppy teeth anytime now.
He's a digger. We've tried many methods to break him. This weekend we gave up & bought a "training collar". Now before you yell at me, we do set it low & it has an audio setting. So he's not getting "zapped" just because he won't listen! If he goes in the flowerbeds he first gets beeped & if that doesn't make him get out then he gets a mild zap. Today is the first day & from the results so far this is going to break the digging pretty quickly!
I think it's more humane than the constant trouble he was getting into! This way the collar is the bad guy & I can do more praising. We've never had a digger before & forgive me if this isn't the method you'd choose! I don't want to be griping & always telling him "No" all the time!
Other than the digging he's a wonderful dog! He's now learning the fresbie jump! He's still young & the coordination isn't quite there. He fetches nicely. He sits, comes, lets go of his tug of war toy when told... great with the grandkids, thinks he's a lap dog. We're happy with our choice of pup......
Now he's at 20 lb. He still has big front paws & everyone that sees him thinks he's going to be a large dog. I'm thinking about 60 lb. To us that's medium size.

Why would someone yell at YOU..... Well I guess with today's society of people that believe corrective punishment is wrong, I see your point......
It's the same way with children.... I here all the time that my wife and I are to strict with our kids, but then the next sentence is ,
"My your kids are so well behaved"
I always get a kick out of my neighbors that tell me how they raised their kids... giving me pointers..... then the Sheriff drops off their kids and they are looking around to see if anyone is watching...hahaha......
Sounds like you have a handle on situation!!!!!!!

I know I sound defensive....
We also had people tell us we were too strict with the kids, then ask for advice on how to get theirs to behave.
None of ours have been jailed, got addicted to drugs or alcohol & we always knew where they were. HERE with their friends eating all our food, wearing out our carpet, & rattling the walls with their music on our stereo!
For about 5 years I never knew how many extras we'd be feeding for dinner! It was fun! Sometimes those friends in leather, piercings & chains were their really sweet friends. They were just out to get a rise out of their parents. Nothing shocked us!!
We tried very hard for punishements to fit the crime. My favorite was, if you were caught lying, you had to pick up the dog terds. I figured if you could dish it out, you could pick it up!! We had some creative things for them...
So when I say I've tried my hardest with this pup, I mean it! He ended up getting zapped 4 times yesterday. So far today he has steered clear of the flower beds!! Maybe this will all be over soon!
In doors he's great!! But it's suddenly turned into spring here & I think keeping him inside would be mean. I'm having a hard time staying inside myself!!:D

He has litterally been so kind as to give away his last 20$ to help out a stranger, then had to borrow from us to buy gas for work! When you have a houseful of kids, they should come first. Helping a stranger is a great thing, but maybe giving some....not ALL would have made more sense!!:)

Interesting my friend also pulled out a $20 bill and gave it to a stranger who asked for gas money. He said "what was I supposed to do, put it back in my pocket?!" Well...yeah?
And another guy up in Reno, walked out of a Brabus S500 and asked for gas money to get back to Vegas. Hmmm? At least if he hadn't climbed out of an S500 I could have believed him and gave him a few bucks....

I'm an easy mark & always get asked when I'm out. I give sometimes & don't sometimes. I often don't have cash. I deal in plastic!
I have been hit up when entering a grocery store & came out with enough food to fill a backpack for the one asking. I've handed them bottle water, juice, apples, crackers, peanutbutter....a variety of non refridgerator items. I did this once in front of a local politician & they wrote an a bit about it in the paper. I didn't the politician, or even notice that anyone was watching me....until they rushed over to interview me.
I've also been asked by the professional pan handlers. If they scare me, they only get the change in the bottom of my purse.

Actually I kind of don't like giving money to people because you never know what they spend it on. If they're hungry, then buy them food. If they need gas, buy them gas. You never know if they're drug addicts or using it for guns or whatever.

Really you don't like pumping gas? I prefer to pump my own gas no matter how long the line is. I keep track of my gallons pumped, gas price, overall cost of that tank, and MPG, so I want the trip odo read exactly and the gallons pumped too. I get mad at my dad when he gives me an estimate of what the trip odo said before he reset it :)

I'd love to show off our pup, but I don't know how to "link" pictures & posting them doesn't work anymore.
I think tabbys are a great kitty. My favorite cat was black but she faded to brown as she aged. She liked to sun bathe. We had her for 19 years, then she was hit by a car. We haven't got another since. When the kids were growing up they'd bring home kittens every chance they got!! The smartest ones, by far were the tabbys!
One time we had a white one with yellow eyes. Using food coloring he got dyed a lot. The neighbors got a kick out of a bright orange cat at halloween, red for Xmas, green for St. patty's day, purlple for easter.... of course our youngest daughter was also doing HER hair! KIDS!!

Yeah, he went from pocket size to "ouch, you're on my foot!" pretty quickly! I still think he'll be medium size when he's done. He's not growing as fast as our 100 lb. dog did. We were really sweating it out when he was 6 months old. The price of nuetering goes up dramatically at 50 lb. This guy will be 30-35 at that time.
He's fun. Hyper, but will settle down on command. Playful, we wear out long before he does. It's so cute watching him learn the fresbie jumps. He's still a clutz! He lands on his back sometimes when he twists in the air. He'll get it eventually. He IS still a baby! In fact, this week he's been losing teeth! There's so much you forget about puppyhood between dogs!

Yesterday Bitzer got his surgery. He already feels great & we're having a difficult time keeping him from over doing it! He has to wear the cone for 2 weeks..... it's going to be a LONG 2 weeks for all of us!! We kept him drugged last night & that kept his hyperness down. Today, since he seems to feel good, I hate to drug him. We'll see how controlable he is through out the day.
It's funny to see him try to cuddle, that cone gets in his way. He hits it on the door frame pretty much every time he goes in & out. It also makes noises spook him a bit. It's all worth it in the long run. We're firm believers that unless you're planning to breed puppies, pets are better off being "fixed".

Cuties! I love watching cats play, they do such interesting things.....
We haven't had a cat since we lost "scorpio" our black haired, green eyed one. She was 19 when she got hit & killed by a car right in fron tof our house. She was petite & furry. I'm not really sure why I haven't got another, just never have.....
She hated water & could leap as high as a shower door, screaming at bath time! She would go next door for breakfast every morning & insist on eating first....before their cats. Then come here for dinner. She'd run home from where ever she was when she heard the electric can opener. I haven't used it in the 3 years, since we lost her. Not on purpose, just suddenly noticed that I'd stopped.
Cats are fun!!:D

I forgot to snap a picture, but our daughter just adopted a choc. lab pup. He's 8 weeks old. They named him "Brownie". Original, huh? Puppies are so cute!! She's got 3 boys so a lab is a pretty good choice, they're great family dogs & usually low grooming maintaince!
Bitzer was having a great time playing with him. I told him what I'd said to Limmie when Bitz was a baby......be nice, he's going to bigger than you someday!!
Bitzer is now coming upon 6 months old. He's weighing 35 lb. He's doing very well with his learning. We're in a warm spell & he had swimming lessons. He was afraid form falling in when he was a baby. It didn't take long for him to trust us. We're looking forward to having another go at it. I think he'll end up loving the pool like the chihuahua & our old mutt did. When he gets comfy enough for just one of us to be in with him, I'll take a picture. Maybe he'll be a skier like Malo was! (Limmie has skied too, but at his size it's not a great fete)
I'm concidering getting a "ragdoll" cat next year. I miss having a cat. I want a BIG one that's lazy. We've had a ragdoll mix & he was cool! They actually go limp when you pick them up! I'm still warming the prince up to the idea. The current excuse is that we're going to gone too much this Summer.....

BB, have you been up to Patrick's Point? It's up above Eureka.
It's beautiful! Always cool, but GREEN. One of the places that the rewoods come to the ocean.
One of my best buddies, like you, loves the cool dreary weather. She went to Humbolt for that reason! Now she lives in Pleasanton.....poor baby! She works in the Oakland area, so she does see the cooler stuff during the week. :)
Friday it's supposed to warm up again! Bitzer will be getting another swimming lesson! I sure hope he loses his fear of the pool from when he fell in. Any suggestions on how to help him overcome it?

Our big mutt that we lost last year was 100 lb. The vet said he should've 85, but he was HAPPY!! I did put him on a diet later when his arthritis got bad. It helped him move easier. I also gave him some of my prince's meds for arthritis. The vet wanted 1K a year to keep him on the doggy meds, so I asked about the ones I already had. He said they're also used for dogs. Well, I could refill the people ones for 5$ a pop.....so I did. It was an anti-inflamitory too. He had a great life & was a major part of our family & my kid's memories.
Here's a shot of Malo setting up to "ski" on a knee board.

Didn't you say you have 2 dogs? What's the other one?
Our Border Collie, Bitzer, is doing well. He reverted back to puppyhood for a while when I was babysitting Brownie, our grand-dog. But now Brownie gets to stay home & they got him a yardmate. Her name is Trinity (came named). She's a buff & cream colored border collie that's about 3 years old. She's sweet, but more of a barker than we're used to. She's outgrown the digging & chewing....which has givien me hope for Bitz...:D
He doesn't really dig anymore, he will chew though! I don't think any of our stacking chairs have the little rubber pads on the bottoms anymore!
Bad dog!
He did chew up 2 or 3 Malibu lights over the Summer when we were on vacation!
We don't use the zapper anymore.
I do threaten to put a muzzle on him.... I own one, but if I pick it up he runs to his house.... It's cool that I don't even have to use it!

Looks like a dog show or something....
Ours don't go that many places since we got leather interiors now... The little one (Limmie) will sit on my lap, but I feel bad if he gets to go & the other doesn't. Bitz goes when we plan to take the Pilot. He has a spot in the back on the rubber liner. When he was a baby, he got car sick.... not good! It's in San Jose, an annual event called "Bark in the Park". It's pretty fun, but the dogs can be a handful sometimes. We put then in the back of the Pilot. We have the rubber mat on the bottom, and the net barrier that goes behing the second row of seats. There is still enough room for them to lay down and stretch out.

That's why the AKC people have had such a hard time accepting border collies...there's not a standard coat or look. They can have short fur, long fur, be black & white, white & black, shades of red, golds, browns & blues & tri. They also come in different sizes. Mostly they're in the 40-50 lb. range.
They do all seem to have simularities in their personality though: herding, that look in their eye, the butt in the air-head down stance..... often they're chewers, diggers & barkers..... If they get bored....watch out!
I should take a more recent pix of Bitz. He's full grown now...he turns one on the 12th of Nov. He's got a personality just like an ADHD kid!:D

my cat LOVES the bitter apple stuff though!! :D she also loves vinegar (someone told me to try spraying them with a vinegar/water combo when they mess with the tree). she's weird!
maybe just try getting them more rawhide or something they're supposed to chew on? maybe if they have something they're supposed to chew on, they'll ignore the stuff that they shouldn't be chewing? worth a shot i guess.

as my wife likes to put it, they are in need of a M.A.W. Magazine Ass Whoopin'. The dog or dogs in question sound like they need a lot of attention and training. how old are they? a dog's chewing phase varies on the type of dog. my tiramisu's chewing phase lasted until she was about 1.5 years. the best thing to do is to provide enough alternatives and attention to distract the dog from the other stuff.

What seems to be happening is the 3.5 year old female is the culprit for starting things, then the 2 "puppies" (one's just now a year old & the other is 8 months) enjoy adding to whatever she does.
She digs (so far in the big flower pots), chews, destroys... She has the ability to hone in whatever I'd like to keep the most. I put some chicken wire around my gardenia that I've been wanting to keep. She's emptied out & chewed up 2 18" X 18" flower boxes that are plastic. That one I can handle. Of course the drip system is now gone!
She (Trinity) prances so sweetly when I go out there or even stand at the door. Like I'm supposed to be happy about the latest thing she attacked!
Bitzer, our dog, knows better & he runs into his doghouse!
Brownie has no brain cells! He has 2 looks, "uh?" (as in did you say something?) & "duh" (that VERY blank look)
The kids claim they'll replace whatever needs be when they move out. I'd rather break her of it so they don't have to deal with it later. I fear it's not going to change though. This is one stubborn dog!
I think they "pups" will outgrow it. I KNOW Bitzer will or he will really know the feel of those magazines!!!

OK, I should've known there was a problem when our sopposedly medium sized mutt ended up to be 100 pounds. Or maybe when my chihuahua ended up being 10-12 pounds (depending on the time of year). They weren't FAT & just ate dog food.....well, mostly.
Yesterday was time for Brownie's check up & annual shots. I figured him to be a nice strong 85 pounds. I knew I had a hard time making him go where I wanted, but I thought it was because he has 4WD & I don't.
He got away from Crystle on the way to the car. The collar came right off. Luckily he'll come to me just fine. I tackled him with my all 4's & she got him recollared. (cinched up a bit more). She'd forgotten her keys in the house. "here, mom. take him for a minute."
Well, he wanted to sniff bushes while I wanted to hold on dutifully.
It wasn't happening.
We went where HE wanted to go.
He's 13 months old.
NOW he'll start filling out.
Um, he weighs 105 pounds!!!
No wonder I couldn't MAKE him do anything. There's a 4 pound difference between us!
AND I still don't have 4WD!!!!

After years with no kids at home or pets, my retired wife decided she wanted a companion dog. We just bought an 8 week old Bichon Frise (female). Still doesn't sleep the night through (we are crate training her), has been very good about doing business outside (if you watch for signs, she doesn't indicate very well yet) and has started chewing on everything. Plus side is she is adorable, affectionate and very smart. Vet says she is healthy in spite of a shadowy origin (suspect she originally came from a "puppy farm" in Lancaster, PA). Hope she starts to sleep all night. She does go into the crate by herself now to snooze. ONly 4 days and I feel like I haven't slept in a month. She's my wife's Birthday persent and my wife has accepted all the workof training her. Of course she had to name her Precious.

Here is a quick shot of "The Precious One" who has taken over the house and the old folks who live here. Never tried posting a picture, so bear with me...I'll get more and better pictures when we get her cleaned up (she gets so dirty so fast)....th efiles are too big, I'll have to resave them as smaller JPEG's. Anyway after a week she has gained a pound, gotten pretty well housebroken, sleeps all night in her crate without fuss, and is a terror against the swifter. She rides well in her carrier, very curious and playful. Thanks for the interest, I'll get those pctures uploaded soonest.

Over our almost 25 years of marriage, my wife and I have had the following endings to pets being a part of our family:
- Putting down 1 cat (18 yr old tabby)
- Putting down 3 dogs that were dying of various diseases (13 yr old pug, 10 yr old Samoyed, 13 yr old Keeshond)
- Having 1 dog pass away from cancer while at the vet (11 yr old Samoyed)
- Having 1 dog pass away in front of my wife after ingesting a piece of K'nex toy building kit that punctured his intestines (3 yrs young rescued terrier mix)
Having to decide to put down an animal due to suffering is a tough call for a pet owner, but also a responsibility when things get too far. But it's the right thing to do. We only wish that we'd have been able to stop our young dog's suffering before he passed - but sometimes it happens so quick you just don't have time...... ok - I'm starting again... :bawl:
In every case above, we'd have the animal cremated and then would plant a memorial plant/bush/tree for each one. Our yard has a lot of memories.
Off to bed - andy

I have a back lawn again!! The choc lab went to his home last month...he wasn't digging, he's just so BIG! Where he walked died, where he pee'd died, where he pottied died..... So weekly I've been tossing out seeds & set the sprinklers to water more often. When we came home from HI it was a lawn!!! I mowed it yesterday for the first time & it's sure nice to look like MY yard again!!!
Now I need to take the palm sander to all the redwood! The other doggy guest chewed corners off!
Our 2 biggest pet losses were my cat of 19 (she was hit by a car) & our 100 lb. mutt, Malo. He needed to be put down. I can't handle suffering & he was hardly able to walk & looked so sad. I still haven't got another cat. I wonder if I ever will now.... :dunno:

Sometimes it is not a bad thing to replace a departed pet for something new. Our newly acquired Bichon has been a hoot. She is stuffed full of personality, friendly, and affectionate. She sleeps all night in her kennel, only goes outside for her business. She is all tomboy, wanting to roll in theh mud and see how dirty she can get her paws and muzzle. Fetches, sits, and usually comes when called. all at opnly 15 weeks old. Does require constant attention and company when awake, but is learning to play and nap on her own. Good thing the wife is home most of the time. Puppies can be just as bad as children. Glad we got her. She doesn't replace the departed pets but does fill a need we have missed since losing old friends.

Always been a fan of dogs. Since I travel so much for work, I really can't have a dog (for now). This is Shyla. She is a friend's dog. The most agile dog I've seen. I just stayed up 28 hours with our old gal. Bless her heart, she's at the E Clinic now. It's a tough call when putting one to sleep has to be addressed. It's not to that point yet but I certainly feel for those who have had to make that call.
Depending on what we find out today around 1PM we may be facing that decision ourselves.
princess
10-01-2005, 11:17 AM
Do you know what the actual problem is? Our's had arthritis for years, but I gave him my prince's meds. Same stuff the vet was pushing but to go through them it was about 1K per year. The same anti-inflamitories were 5 bucks for him on our medical insurance. I asked the vet & they agreed it would be fine since he was a 100 lb. dog. So his comfort there improved.
He had survived someone poisoning him too.
Then his last few months he started losing control. He fell into the pool twice. Luckily someone was home to rescue him. He lost his sparkle.
It got so he seemed to be asking us to do SOMETHING & there wasn't anything else we could do.....so THAT decision was made. I still miss him & love telling about his life! Although he NEVER jumped up, he'd climb the pool slide ladder & go down. He loved playing in the pool! He water skiied. We'd trained him to only fetch tennis or racquet calls. We didn't realize it until he went on a family baseball game. He refused to outfield the softballs or baseballs! He'd run to them as if he would, then NOPE, it wasn't getting picked up. If they used a tennis ball, then he was a great outfielder!!
Those memories are wonderful!
If it's the end for your beloved critter....cherish the memories.

Like others, I went through what to do as well. My last dog lived 14 wonderful years. When the "decision" came up, I was fortunate to have a terrific, devoted, longtime Veterinarian. I asked what he would do if she were her dog and why. He explained that her increasing problem walking and immobility would get worse and there was nothing he could do to prevent or cure this. He said it was time to let her go. I followed his advice.
In the upcoming days and weeks, I found comfort in knowing that I did everything possible to give her a happy life. If I did not have her, someone else would have and I doubted they could have cared for her as much, and knew they could not have cared for her more.

Update:
The Vet said that the dog was now eating solid food and doing better. We decided that it would make more sense to leave her there tonight and pick her up tomorrow. That will give them more observation time and her a bit more healing/rest time.
Princess we don't know what happened, it was very sudden. Yes, we know something will likely happen again at her age but it's not time to call Dr. Kevorkian yet.

Ummm, when Malo was poisoned he was faomy, drooly, couldn't walk, had the squirts, looked awful....
It was the symptoms of getting into snail bait. But he hadn't been around it. I then discovered a meat wrapper in the bushes by the fence. We think someone had planned to come into the yard in the future & figured they'd rid is of the dog.
I gave him hydrogen peroxide at the vet's suggestion since I couldn't lift him to take him in. It did the trick!! He was fine. Not in a flash, but a few hours later. It was a steady improvement! By the time "dad" got home, he was happier again.
I made flyers & warned all my neighbors that we had a dog poisoner on the lose the next day.
