View Full Version : Ordered this today....
RTexasF 11-24-2005, 11:11 AM Time to retire my old Escort cordless unit. It was never that good anyway and damn near got me popped the other day......Nothing like a 50' warning!!!!!! It doesn't see the POP instant on either, time to go. Better than nothing I suppose.
This one tops the charts as the best, I hope so. No, slowing down is not an option.
stiller fan 11-24-2005, 11:17 AM if i may ask, how fast do you normally go???? ;)
billinaz 11-24-2005, 11:21 AM The funny thing is I see these expensive detectors all the time.
The only problem is they rarely go off with LiDAR.
The laser is too narrow and does not make it up over the hood. Most of these are placed high on the windshield, and when I bring the laser to the unit, it goes off.
stiller fan 11-24-2005, 11:23 AM stopped using mine to help conserve gas (and keep insurance rates down) about 9 months ago......
granted, only 70mph on the PA TP, but if i am traveling, i'll go with the flow of traffic, or +10mph, whichever is faster...... :naughty:
EXLNavi 11-24-2005, 11:30 AM I hardly use my V1.
Most times it's packed away in the glove box.
Most times I just listen to the troopers on the scanner... Much better than a radar detector, IMO.
Yes I know there are state scanner laws but I have a ham radio license so I'm allowed to carry a scanner in the car.
I got pulled over on the NYS thruway once and the cop wanted to confiscate my radio. But after I showed him the section of the V&T law in the official DMV book and my radio license he left me alone.
By the way - a tip for those of you in NY fighting moving violations - get the official copy of the V&T law book from the DMV. I think it's $3 per copy and you have to mail a form to Albany to get it. Even if a cop writes you up and you go in front of an ALJ to fight your ticket, that book is your best defense. The judge doesn't have to look at anything you print out from the internet (it could even be the official website, it doesn't matter) but they have to recognize that book because it's an official document with the DMV stamp and certification on it.

I agree. If you get a laser signal you just bought the farm.
Lidar is not widespread here....yet. A shot at the headlights or license plate may sound the alarm but then it's too late.......pull over. Also, I don't mount high on the windshield, stupid move.

99% of the time the most I'll go is 5 over the posted limit on the highway. Texas DPS won't blink for 5 over, it's not worth their time when so many run 10-15 over.
Although not often, there are times I'll run 80. Recently the drive to Brownsville took 6 hours due to all the little towns you must go through. It's only 360 miles but it just takes forever. Some of these little towns survive from speeding tickets so I want to know when they are there even though I'm legit. More curiosity than offender.
If you've not driven in Texas you can't comprehend the distances and time involved. Even the 18 whelers will run you down when you're doing the speed limit in the right lane. Speeding is part of living here, again, most don't/can't understand.
I'm sure Ward does, he's a San Antonio boy!
stiller fan 11-24-2005, 11:51 AM i can imagine setting my cruise control for 90mph, and still being passed..... it has happened on i95 before.....
EXLNavi 11-24-2005, 11:57 AM Texas allows 75MPH on two lane highways, so 5 over is 80MPH! :lmao:
I think you'd have to be going over 100 to get pulled over. :paranoid:
When I was there I drove 80-90 in a rental car. Never got pulled over because I was going with the flow of traffic.

Depends on where...
On the NJTP I typically go 60-70. In VA I slow down to not more than 5 over because VA will practically cut your balls off if they pull you over for speeding.
In the south I do go fast, the few times that I've driven there - As soon as I hit SC it's pedal to the metal baby...
I behave myself in NJ. Troopers hide all over, in the bushes, around the corner and on offramps. And since I'm there more frequently I think some troopers on my offramp (exit 4 off I-280) know my car by now...
In NY, fugeddaboudit. Traffic moves too slow anyway. Upstate I try to behave.
CT I try to behave even though most people don't...

I've lived here the majority of my life, which covers a looong time, and never seen a 75 MPH speed limit posted.
Admittedly I've not been to west TX so it may exist there.
EXLNavi 11-24-2005, 01:08 PM I don't think I've seen one either but state law allows 75. The actual limits may be lower. I have heard of 75MPH in west texas, and the law actually allows 80 in some places I think in I-10 and I-20.
But from my experience traffic flows at 80-90MPH.
I haven't been there all that much so I dunno.
I may be in DFW next month though.

The first part you'll have to show me in print, the second part is absolutely correct!
mrjtree 11-24-2005, 04:39 PM A whole lotta stuff on speed limits around the world.

75 mph and 80 mph limits
In 2001, the Texas Legislature allowed the Texas Department of Transportation to post 75 mph (120 km/h) speed limits in counties with fewer than 10 people per square mile[7]. This has the practical effect of only allowing 75 mph speed limits in the most sparsely populated counties, all of which are generally well west of a line stretching from San Antonio to Odessa. In 2005, the Texas Legislature revised this law, allowing 80 mph (130 km/h) limits on I-10 and I-20 in certain rural counties in west Texas[8]. This law also revised the eligibility for 75 mph speed limits: now eligible counties can have up to 15 persons per square mile.
Texas law allows 75 mph speed limits on two-lane roads. Several west Texas 2 lane roads carry 75 mph limits, including portions of US 90[9]. No other state has a limit higher than 70 mph on any 2 lane road.
Essentially it is west TX area that allows the higher speeds.
Wardsweb 11-25-2005, 04:23 AM For anyone who has never been to west Texas, you can not comprehend the amount of vast open expanse. Roads that go on forever in the middle of nothing. You wouldn't ever get there, if you were not going 80, but 100 is better :naughty:
What me speed, no way, it's against the law. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :D
psyshack 11-25-2005, 04:50 AM Texas is not the only place where roads seem to run with no end. Most of the southwest is like that.
As for radar detectors I ditched them years a ago. They have that fancey copper radar here in okiehoma. By the time you detector goes off nazi copper has you called in. Scanners and CB are still far better than detectors.
OwAce 11-25-2005, 06:00 AM radar detectors work only if your in traffic and you run into a speedtrap sort of deal.
i know my v1 has saved me several times. thing goes off with is crazy ass warning, and i slow bout 3 over the limit (from 10-12 over) and then i get the deedle deedle sound which means hey laser just hit me, and then 5 seconds later i get another deedle deedle sound, and 20 secs later i see the cruiser.
ofcourse the only time i got caught was when i was bymyself on a country road v1 gave me warning, i just ignored it, the 2nd time around (5 secs later) the guy caught me on his laser...
i guess though scanners rock since they let you know where the officer will be.
what i find funny though is k40 users who feel that their laser jammers on their licence plates make them invisible.
