New YEar with a nail on tire, can't be patch, HOW?

Dear all..

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Sigh, what a year to start my first day of new year! Found a big nail on my front passenger side' Michellin tire (Accord 2005 EX 4 cylinder)!!!! Brought to a store to patch, and they said bcos the nail is less than a inch from the side, they can't patch the tire!!!

So I guess that left me with 2 options

1) Continue to drive the car with the nail on the tire...and hope the nail will keep the air in the tire. But with this, i will not have the peace of mind.. :(

2) Replace the tire. But replacing it with original Michellin tire is darn expensive. I assume it's going to be $150 and above? And if I bring it to the dealer, it will be more????

Can anyone suggest what i should do? :dunno:

Should I bring the car to some other dealers or stores to see if they can patch?

And if I must replace the tire, should I go with the original tire - Michellin? or some other comparable brand will do? And would it be better to do it in store like Pepboys instead of Honda dealer???

I bought this car 4 months ago..so the tire is considered pretty new.

Hey Nemo, are you trying to patch it or plug it?? I'd go to the car store and get a tire plug set, the one with the rasp, plug tool and plugs, and hope for the best....those things work wonders....you pull out the nail with pliers, quickly stick the rasp in the hole then put the plug tool w/ the plug in the hole....good luck!

Such a new car with low miles...Id just order a new michelin tire to match whats on your car from the tire rack and have your local shop put it on. I dont think there is enough wear on the tires yet to buy 2 or 4.

My advice would to be to get a second opinion about a proper patching job. They might have been hoping to sell you a new tire with scare tactics. Or replace the tire with new tires on one axle. You can proballly buy 2 Yokohama's or BF Goodrich Traction T/A's for about the same money as one Michelin..

Where do you live? Maybe someone (like me) would be willing to sell you a pair of gently used Michelins to help fund their new set of tires...???

Of course, if shipping was involved, it wouldn't be worth it.

There are some on EBay right now in TX, AZ, NJ and CA...

You might have to drive around with your spare for a few days, but it would be a cheap solution. :naughty:

I had a nail in one of my tires. The air would slowly leak out every couple of weeks.

I finally went to the tire shop and had them take a look. The tire shop I carried it to took it out and used a plug. Quick and painless and good as new. They said that the plug would outlast the tire. Charged me $10 for the whole job. No complaints about it thus far. It seems to be holding up well.

The only time, IMO, that a tire should be replaced is if it's a large hole, the sidewall is damaged, the tire is worn down or you drove on a flat tire. Other than that the tire is patchable or pluggable.

if the nail is within an inch of the sidwall the tire NEEDS to be replaced. there is too much flex at that point on the tire to be safe after being repaired. yeah, some people get by with unsafe tires, but some people don't. pretty simple, weak point at point of alot of stress and flex of the tire = unsafe.

Well where I got the hole was almost dead center, so I guess I'm OK.
