View Full Version : points system

hey wards, is there anyway to adopt a points system to gaurd against pointless posts/posts unrelated to thread topic/posts attacking other users etc??? i know atleast one site does this, and i'm not exactly sure what the whole purpose is other than to warn people that this thread may be pointless or whatever, but maybe there would be an end goal of keeping the forums as friendly and helpful as possible by booting users who reach a certain threshold or taking away their posting privileges?

i know we can "rate a thread" with the stars, but i was thinking of this as being more of a moderator terrirtory. ie someone reports a post or thread and a mod for that forum goes in and marks it if it so deems it. any replies to that post would also result in a "point" or whatever being given to that poster and anyone who continues to fuel the fire.

i know alot of us are guilty as charged on fueling the fires once it's been started, but maybe a deterrant would be nice? and enable us to keep more control over the forums?

i don't want to negate all discussions or posts that belong inthe off topic pitt area oranything like that though!! but keeping the negative and attacking comments to a minimum would be nice.

One site I know has a "three strikes" rule.

If you show a repeated pattern of being nasty/rude/aggressive/argumentative/harrassing towards other members, you get a temporary suspension based on the severity of the offense.

If you get three suspensions you are banned permanently.

Points aren't a bad idea at all, but this is another way to deal with the problem.

yeah i havent thought it all of the way through, but i think it can give members a little control over the type of forum we have and still allows ultimate control to the mods, not just any random poster.

Would an option to report a post to the mods a better idea? If you start "marking" a thread, then you're not letting the flame die on its own and you're not letting others try to re-align the thread since everyone who posts will get marked.

Psy, you're cool in my books. ;)

On that note, I think any personal degrading remarks or "low-blows" should be an automatic suspension.... Remarks made to stiller-fan will be considered on a case-by-case basis. :lmao:

anysia

on tov, if you respond directly to a downgraded post, yours is downgraded too, but if you respond to an earlier post in the thread (maybe this could be acheived by quoting it or something), your post is not marked.

yep, any comments about stiller's car will have to be carefully reviewed and voted on. :lmao: maybe a poll for each comment in relationship to his car.... :lmao: oh wait, we'd have nothing but polls about that!

seriously though, we joke with stiller. he knows that. we all joke with each other from time to time. those aren't the offensive posts. if the person being joked with finds it offensive, they can say something, but anyone else would be disregarded. i think that's where mods would come into play. determining if it was a derogatory remark or just a joking thing like we do with stiller. ;)

We already have an option to report the post to a mod/admin and there is a "rate thread" button on the top right of the first post on each page.

the rate thread button only goes so far though.... it's for any user to go ahead and rate the thread and it does nothing to reprimand the offensive posters.... :(

reporting works to an extent, but only in extreme cases where the thread ends up closed.

that's why i'm thinking we might need something more elaborate... something that says hey, misbehave and you could be banned from posting. but even though any member could request any post be looked into, that doesn't mean that it will be marked derogatory. you know what i mean? that's where the mods would come in. a less biased opinion (let's face it, noone will be completely unbiased. :lmao: ) and final authority to degrade an individual post and any subsequent derogatory replies.

thing is, there needs to be a known threshold for "points" or whatever. if there isn't, well, it's not going to deter anyone from doing anything.

Banning people isn't really a problem you know. Other forums ban people.

However, people usually pop up under new IDs and when you IP ban them they start getting creative and using anon proxies.

What would be useful is if the mods at least start warning people and editing posts. That way offenders know that rude behaviour isn't tolerated.

Determined trolls will never go away, but we haven't had that many of them here.

is that because you only have power in certain forums and not all of them?

that's what i think we need. the mods to have more access to more of the forums so that when one isn't around, another might be. i1's the only one with a general access to everything. other than that, you guys only have access to a couple of forums..... :dunno: call me crazy but i think if all of you guys all had acess to all the forums, it might be better off.

but i do think in addition there needs ot be some sort of way to slap offenders on the wirst, especially when they are repeat offenders...... ;) i've been called some stuff i didn't appreciate and i've seen many others called/told things that just shouldn't be tolerated.... yeah we all have our disagreements, but when it turns dirty, well, something more needs to be done there. i don't want it to become so moderated that we can't express opinions, but the taking things to a personal level needs to be cut off now before this forum turns into a bash-fest.

that's where the problem lies. current mods access to modify/delete/lock threads. i don't think there is a problem with the number of mods. too many mods, the forum will appear to heavily moderated. i think most of the large issues have been taken care of in a more than timely fashion. i think you guys have done a great job with what you have access to, but i think you need access to all forums to be completely effective. :)

The report a post works if used! Some members use it and some don't.

This is a public/community forum and for the most part people act like adults, but as is any community you have the bad apples and they have to be weeded out.

If someone say's something that offends you at that moment just step back and think about that persons opinion, if they start being derogatory or nasty then they need to be dealt with. Giving members a "Scarlet Letter" does not contribute to a friendly atmosphere in my opinion.

eh, well there are some members who have overstepped bounds by far in that department. and there have been repeat offenders. granted most end up finally calling it quits and just leaving, but some reappear.

being nice only gets you so far. and it has gotten me walked on way too many times and i have sai d before i'm done with that "being nice" crapola..... sometimes some people will never learn with a nice silent reprimand. they need it to be more public. and there's still no garauntee that that would work for everyone. but it would probably weed out a few more. and for the remainder, fight fire with fire, ban their ip after so many offenses. sure they may come back reincarnated, ban them again. or move every single post they make to a seperate thread.

we don't have the typical troll issue here that alot of boards have, which is great. what we do ahve is alot of people who just plain have attitudes and i'm sick of that and giving them attitude right back whether it's appreciated or not. and there is alot of stalking by ex's and the like in people's lives which needs to be put to a stop somehow. maybe other forums are larger and those people go unnoticed. who knows. but i certainly don't appreciate those members or the ones who directly attack any member. and i havent' seen things get better, only worse, therefore i have started fighting fire with fire by the only means that i can. call them out on it. yell back when they are mean towards anyone. etc.

my two cents.

All great ideas but again not practical in a public forum. I've expected this all along - as a forum grows, you get more of "those" people...it's just inevitable. We try to fight them off but ya know it's not gonna be perfect. Can't be asking Wards to ban IP's every night - he has other things to worry about too.
