I have a 94 accord lx manual trans and im having crazy idle prolems.
when i start my car up it rev all the way up to like 2500 then in about 20 seconds it will rev up to about 3000 then idle down to 1200 and keep doing it. one of my friends told me that this could be the tps sensor. do anybody know wats wrong with my car. and i looked in the book to see how to check a engine code and the code is coming out to be a code 41 which is oxygen sensor please help me

What I'd do first is disconnect the EACV and check that the idle is 550RPM +/- 50RPM. If it is not, either the base idle is misadjusted, or there is a vacuum leak.

Reset ECU, start engine, leave one minute with no load, then turn on rear demister, A/C, high beamss, etc, and turn off. If the idle stays at about 700-800ROM then it's fine, or intermittent.

We had a range of problems in the '93 which the dealer pointed out was probably a bad EACV, even though I'm still not sure, the symptoms have not come back first.

Tell us what happened after this (including how it behaved with the EACV disconnected (still running bad?)) and other people on the board shoudl be able to help.

Seems how it's teling you it's the OX sensor, testing that sounds like a logical place to start....

Is there a reason you don't think it's telling you the truth?

There's an article in here that talks about them:

It's just that when the '93 went through its problems it started burning extremely rich (black smoke, 180mi per tank)... then it was fine.

Actually, I don't know anything about the o2 sensors so I started with the idle...

when u say disconnect the eacv do u mean take it of or disconnect the plug or wat?

Just pull the plug out. Engine will throw a code, but ignore it.

Don't forget to pull the ECU fuse for >10 seconds afterwards.

sounds like you have a bad IAC motor or poss a vac leak... you should take it to a qualified tech to have it checked. Before you do anything, you need to make sure you have the proper 5v reference to the sensors/motors that contribute to idle quality... if you don't have the 5v reference from the ECM, it's poss that the ECM may be an issue.

I don't know if I'd go for help so soon... Anything is worth a try.

Our EACV was $500 to replace at the dealer (Labour + EACV). Our '93 might be worth $2000.

If then engine runs at around 550RPM when the EACV is disconnected then perhaps the EACV should be cleaned with a throttle body cleaner. If that fails, then perhaps a part replacement may be necessary. If it runs at a higher RPM, then I'd search for a vacuum leak. I'd call this a much easier way to search for a leak. If no leak is found, adjust the idle using the bleed screw.

Before suspecting the ECU is at fault, check that the EACV has 8~15 Ohms of resistance. If it is not within that specification, the solenoid is bad and the EACV will need to be replaced.

was the car recently touched by a mechanic. a 94 teg i used to own exhibited the same problem. turned out the "idle control sensor" (??? :dunno: ) had been plugged in wrong. it was a simple swap sensor situation.

thats what i can offer incase the above doesnt work. :dunno:

i did get a engine swap back in august last year because the engine i had, had a knock in it but it did not through any check engine codes. so when i took it to a shop and they replace it for another motor but when they replaced it, my car check engine light was on but running fine the mechanic told me to ride it about 300 miles and it should reset it self. it never did, then about three months later i started having idle problems and i dont understand y, i got the engine checked and the code was 41 oxygen sensor.

With the EACV unplugged the engine should actually be idling at about 500/550RPM, so perhaps you should look around for a vacuum leak at this point, unless you have already done so.

Have you checked the throttle plate for any gummy substances?

You say your trim is LX, so you have a carburettor, right? If you smell gas, perhaps the choke is stuck. How has your gas mileage been lately?

no its a fuel injection, i unplugged eacv, took out the fuse for 20 minutes, then plugged then started the car up.
my results was different my engine is now idling down to 1200rpm and kinda goes + then - 50 rpm, then i pulled a sensor out thats called the map sensor and it stay steady at 1200rpm.
and im still smelling gas
and i checked the throttle plate for any gummy substances
and how do i check for a vacuum leak ?
