View Full Version : H22 into a 90 accord
90accord 01-27-2006, 06:27 PM im thinking about swapping in the h22 and was just wondering if anybody had any tips on things to do first or stuff to watch out for or where to get one and stuff like that. also what should i change and what should i leave.
stiller fan 01-27-2006, 07:23 PM i think that darkriver4362 was thinking of doing that to his 5th gen accord......
but i'll warn you now: he's a 4th gen killer........... :lmao:
darkriver4362 01-28-2006, 04:27 PM Hey!!
H22 swap into a 4th gen is a good way to go. Make SURE you get your mounts from a reputable place like Hasport...those are the pimpmaster of all motor mounts...
Make sure you order from somewhere that tests their engines and have a startup guarantee...like www.hmotorsonline.com or www.jaydm.com. www.topendmotorsports.com seems to have the best pricing, with the engine, transmission and ECU for just over 2000, throw in 200 bucks and you get a LSD Transmission.
I'm thinking of going with the F20B outta the Accord SiR-T....it's a 2.0l 200hp engine, lil less tourqe than the H22, but it's alot lighter, and can rev higher.
Whereever you go to get it installed, MAKE SURE, you get them to do the automatic to manual timing belt tensioner retrofit, it'll save you madd head work or maybe a new engine.
You also have the choice of the JDM F22....DOHC VTEC 160hp...it's a lil cheaper than the others.
IMO You should put an NSX engine in it, the 2007 NSX....lol j/k. PM Me for some more links.

P.S. Don't listen to Stiller, Ever, Ever.
90accord 01-28-2006, 10:03 PM i wanted to stay with the auto tranny, so does the LSD give me anything special or extra.
TypeG 01-29-2006, 06:01 AM also try this site www.cb7tuner.com
good info on the fourth gen and more than half have a swap. later.

It's a better transmission, both tires will pull...I don't have one so I think that's what it does lol.
But yeah www.cb7tuner.com is a great place to look, www.accordracing.com is also a good one, a few of the guys have the JDM H22, and at least 2 have the F20B, pretty informatative. I can vouch for accordracing being a good group of people comparable to the "niceness" of the people on this site. I'm the same username on ar.com if you wanna pm me.

90accord 01-29-2006, 07:11 PM what year of h22 should i look for to put into my car
BenjiBoy650 01-29-2006, 09:15 PM Any year H22 will do but you probably will find newer ones more abundant.
darkriver, I don't think you should put a F20B in your car. Probably a nice motor but the Accord is heavy and could use the torque. H22 was running in the 5th gen Preludes and they weigh more than your car so I'm sure it'll work better. You don't want to be doing 4000RPM merging onto a freeway everyday, you'll just have to take my word for it lol. H22 redline 7200 fuel cutoff ~8000 JUN chipped 8500-9000?? Plenty of revs. Plus you'll have parts support for a little while. F20B if your stuff breaks well good luck to ya lol.
If I were you, I wouldn't turbo the car. A good setup that isn't going to blow up your engine is going to cost 3-4k base plus AEM EMS or Hondata ~$1k plus etc etc = 6-7k for an engine that might last another 50k miles at best. Plus you will need to run synthetic @ 3K OCI to avoid burning up the turbo and it'll suck a lot more gas at all times plus you'll still need to get the fuel map and everything tuned. Nice project but not really for the faint of heart or for those looking for +50HP...makes a lot more sense if you want +200HP.

Yeah...the H22 has a heluva lotta support...it's just it seems like everyone and their mom has the H22 lol...Just the F20B would be a true SiR-T conversion. I'm still lost on which engine to put in though.
I'd actually love to bump 200HP over stock lol.
Eh...whenever the engine goes...I'm getting lots of input from different tuning shops on the pro's and cons of everything.....so far the common opinion, if I was to get a turbo motor, to go with the JDM version of the F22, DOHC VTEC....All motor, H22 or F20B because of the high compression....all in all they're just making my life harder lol. Everyones gonna hate me for this, but whatever one I go with is gettin' sprayed lol. I had it in my 90...it's addicting...lol.
eh...I'll type up all my notes from the shops one day and post them.
BenjiBoy650 01-29-2006, 10:38 PM JDM H22 from Prelude Type-S = 220ps

It's beautiful ain't it?? lol
Hey I wanna join your NATO too, I hate those things
I dunno what I'm gonna do yet....whatever it is I want it to look clean, with no VTEC advertising on the outside;).
90accord 01-30-2006, 06:55 PM i heard that the 92-95 would be the best fitting motor for my car... also is the only thing ill need other than the motor and tranny itself motor mounts from Hasport?

Don't forget the ECU's. The 92-95 will probably be easier to fit into your car since they're built on similar chassis', but any year will work. You would be more likely to pass smog on a newer one the way I think about it...but no confirmation on that. If your state requires a visual you'll have to cross your fingers and hope the tech doesn't notice the new engine :lmao:

I'd get a set man, it's cheaper to get the engine, tranny and ecu as a set. It's all matched up already too....assemble n drop in, well, bolt it in too lol.
Ben...I was talkin' to the guy over at Tempest Racing, he was tellin' me that the H22's usually don't have a problem passing emissions, if my dumb azz brother can pass with his NOS still hooked up on his Mustang there shouldn't be a problem. MD's emissions is a joke anyways, I've seen them drive a car thru the little building, not even checking anything on it, drive it in, drive it out, pass....wtf.
But yeah, 90accord, listen to Benji...he's tha man!!! Everything he's said has been good, sound advice!
There's a h22 swap Q&A sheet somewhere online I saw before, I'mma try to dig it up.
BenjiBoy650 01-31-2006, 03:35 PM You should have absolutely no problem passing the "sniffing" section of smog since you're installing a newer engine in an older car (thus the engine is following emissions requirements for say 95 which is stricter than the 1990's emissions that a 1990 Accord would be required to follow). However some states (CA) have a visual requirement, and if a tech is sharp and sees a H22 in a Civic or Accord, they'll fail it (if they're mean). Also an engine from a newer car should have less miles, won't have been sitting around as long, follow stricter requirements, so even if it's not at factory spec it'll be more likely to be under the 1990's spec.
90accord 01-31-2006, 07:46 PM where i live we dont have any smog or emissions tests so im all good... and i was thinking if i was going to put an exhaust on my car after the H22 what header would i need... for a prelude or for a accord... if i was to get a cat-back would an accord exhaust hook up to a prelude header if thats what i need... so many questions but i dont know how to phrase them...lol
90accord 02-03-2006, 06:49 PM where did everybody go... what type of mods can i do to the motor before i put it in.. like upgraded valvetrain and stuff like that..
BenjiBoy650 02-03-2006, 07:02 PM H22 is very popular. If you wanted to you could rebuilt the entire thing with new parts probably. My friend has a NA H22 built from the bottom to the top in his 95 'Lude and it pulled 13.1 on street tires with major wheelspin. It dynoed @ ~305WHP. If you want revs, upgrade the valvetrain most. You might lose low end, but it'll give you much better top end. The rods and crank in the H22 seem pretty strong already but you shouldn't push it too much. You should get a Prelude header, and I'm sure if you bring it a muffler shop they can make it hook up to anything.
90accord 02-03-2006, 07:09 PM i definatley want hp and i dont really want to go go as far down as cranks and rods im thinkin cams, head, valves, retainers, springs, that should push me over 200 i hope.
darkriver4362 02-06-2006, 04:28 PM You'll have 200 as soon as you drop in the H22.
90accord 02-06-2006, 05:19 PM i know ill have 200 when i drop it but i was sayin hopefully doin that stuff to the motor before i put it in will push me over 200.
90accord 02-27-2006, 05:32 PM hey just another question... who makes the auto to manual timing tensioner thing and where would i find one?
BenjiBoy650 02-27-2006, 07:27 PM Not 100% sure what you're talking about but my guess is adjustable cam sprockets (http://www.modacar.com/products/Honda/Accord/MODACAG)
90accord 02-28-2006, 06:29 PM no i mean the auto to manual timing belt tensionor retofit???
