View Full Version : Random Navi lockup

Anyone experienced their navi locking up and becoming unresponsive to commands? Mine did that tonight after it was recalculating after I took a wrong turn and ended up Eastern Parkway. So I ended up pulling over and the only way I could fix it was rebooting it, which meant shutting the car off then starting it again.

Oh well, I shouldn't have expected any less. It runs Windows after all. :lmao:

Nope, it was just flashing "recalculating" for like 5 minutes and was totally unresponsive to any commands that had to deal with the navi portion.

I've been thinking of linux, it's just hard to convert when I already know so much about windows...I heard it's best to convert over 100%....just quit windows cold turkey forcing you to learn linux. Plus I heard that windows Vista (aka longhorn) might be open source when it comes out....maybe by xmas.

Global Positioning System (GPS) Limitations
The GPS cannot detect the vehicle's position during the following instances:

For the first 5 to 10 minutes after reconnecting the battery (This can take as long as 45 minutes).

When the satellite signals are blocked by tall buildings, mountains, tunnels, large trees, inside parking structures or large trucks.

When the GPS antenna is blocked by metallic window tinting or by an object placed above it in the vehicle. The GPS antenna requires a clear unobstructed view of the sky.

When there is no satellite signal output (Signal output is sometimes stopped for satellite servicing).

When the satellite signals are blocked by the operation of some electronic aftermarket accessories including, but not limited to non-OEM in-dash entertainment units (radio, CD players/changers, radar detectors and theft recovery systems), and cellphones placed near the navigation system.

The accuracy of GPS is reduced during these instances:

Metallic window tinting above the GPS antenna.

When only two satellite signals can be received (Three satellite signals are required for accurate positioning).

When the satellite control centers are experiencing problems.

When driving near high tension power lines.

When the satellite signals are blocked by the operation of some electronic aftermarket accessories including, but not limited to non-OEM in-dash entertainment units (radio, CD players/changers, radar detectors and theft recovery systems), and cellphones placed near the navigation system.

:dunno:

Let us know if it happens again. If it reboots....even if it takes longer than it should.... it may be a one time glitch. It may have got too confused by it's location or something.

Mine hasn't rebooted, it has taken a long time to recalculate if I'm either too out in the middle of nowhere or a possibilty of blocked signals, like buildings. The Garmin was even worse in the same areas! :paranoid:

so i guess you guys dont know about the car virus going around? :paranoid:

a healthy dose of vtec fluid should fix it.

I found headlight fluid on that other page....they didn't have VTEC fluid though.

they are total nincompoops. vtec fluid can fix all. headlights, brake, transmission, seating, window, sunroof. the list is endless.

When the satellite signals are blocked by tall buildings, mountains, tunnels, large trees, inside parking structures or large trucks.

From the looks of it, it wasn't a GPS problem. I am pretty sure it was receiving signal because I was out on Eastern Parkway, which is pretty open. I've driven there many times and had more than six satellites in view according to the diag screen, so I don't think that was the problem.

It did seem like a random glitch. The same thing happened just when the car hit 10k miles. May have been a coincidence that it hit 10k and navi locked up, but it behaved well until now.

This didn't seem like it was simply a case of taking too long to recalculate, it was just frozen. Audio and HVAC commands worked, but I couldn't use any of the navi buttons. Usually when it's recalculating I can press menu then cancel current route and re-enter the route to recalculate.

I drove it today around Queens (to costco and back) and it seemed fine. I'll let you guys know if it acts up again.

No Ctrl Alt Del on Navi, unfortunately, and no BSOD either!

I used to run linux a lot on my desktop PCs (since 1994) but now I only run Mandrake on a server here. XP is pretty stable and most of my photo/video editing software doesn't run on free OSes. (GIMP is nice, but Photoshop CS2 with camera RAW blows it out the water) So I'm pretty much stuck with Windows for now.

I do plan to eventually get a mac though. :)

This thread got my prince's attention & when he read it was cracking up at the "windows" & "vtec fluid" stuff..... :lmao:

He'd looked because he hasn't seen hardly any NAV stuff going on & since we have 2, he wanted to know if someone has found a problem. We're hoping it was just "brain gas" on the part of the NAV system & won't ever reappear!! :)

My girlfriend actually likes the male voice on the Navi. She doesn't understand why I am not comfortable with that. :paranoid: .....I'm still waiting for the Lucy Liu option for a voice. Maybe a little video of her on the corner of the Navi pointing which direction to go.
