This past weekend I brought in my 98 Accord EX coupe (4cyl) for an oil change. Currently I'm at 86000 miles and the next oil change will be the 90000 service. They've given me the following costs for upcoming repairs:
$695. for the 90000 mie service
$395. for a tuneup
$455. to replace the CV joint boots which appear worn
Myself and my dealer are in Long Island, NY.
Wondering if the prices seem comparable to what others have paid?

I'd only replace the CV joints if they are clicking when you turn. If they aren't, don't replace them. I think that is a lot of money just to replace the boots. Maybe Benji can help you there.
Tune up on a F23? Isn't that just plugs and wires? If so, do that yourself. The F23 is a very easy engine to work on.
I know you have a timing belt service due soon. Was that included in your 90k service?
Just open your manual and see what it includes. Most of it is easy stuff to do on your own. Save your money for that timing belt....that's an expensive service.

I thought it all sounded expensive so I thought I would utilize the collective knowledge of the forum.
Tune-up quoted as plugs, wires, distributor cap and PCV valve.
90000 mile service includes spark plugs, tranny flush, brake flush, oil change, belt inspection/tightening, brake inspection, lube, check exhaust, etc.
CV joint replacement is just that and when on the rack they seamed fine with a stratch/slah on one side. Still very flexible - no cracking.

All that is way too expensive. You can do most of that yourself for under 200 bucks. Only thing you should leave to a pro is the timing belt and CV boot. I'd only replace the CV boot if it's in bad shape or if it's torn. Mine haven't showed those symptoms yet so I haven't replaced em.

Thanks Benji, do you remember how much your 90000 mile service was? timing belt replacement?

My timing belt was $450-500 (previous owner did it). I never did a 90K service because I did most of it myself. I didn't change the wires or distributor...they still work good :dunno:

It looks like they are charging you $300 for the tranny & brake flush. Wow. I can't say that I would let that dealer put air in my tires as they would probably tell me that I need new tires b/c the air is so old.

Hahahashaha....air is old... :lmao: :lmao:
Don't forget the Vtec Fluid...that's a $75 charge too :naughty:

This all happened between 150,000-160,000 KM (About 90,000Mi) (One year)
Oil change,
Spark Plugs (NGK),
Wiper blades,
Adjustments,
$500 at the dealer (last time that ever happens).
$475 for a new EACV and labour for idiot technicians at the dealer.
$150 for a new CV Joint. (Mobile mechanics rule).
$12.50 for a bottle of fuel injector cleaner for the thrashing myself and my mother gave the car as part of a simple (carbon cleanout) tune-up.
$250 for two new front tyres and wheel alignment.
$50 for oil and filter change.
________
$1437.50
=======
Still might like to change the coolant for about $35-40 next time the oil is done, since the current stuff is more then six years old.
Transmission fluid might help, last done 80,000km ago.
'Engine flush' as reccomended by the 9-min oil change people. (Meh, might as well anyway).
A 'Tuneup' for the old engines should simply be a bottle of injector fluid.
The price for your CV-Joints looks like you're being taken for an idiot.

Just spend some money on a shop manual for the car and do almost all of it yourself. Only part i would even let the dealship do is the timing belt replacement when it is due, CV boots aren't hard to replace just messy.

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone. I thought ALL the numbers sounded way too high.
I'm going to check my records ( I keep everything but it's in a messy folder) to check if/when the tranny and brake fluids were changed. I think the brakes were done at 73000 when I had all brake pads changed and the tranny was probably at 60000. Without either of those the 90000 mile service is a huge rip-off. Also both the tuneup and 90000 mile service include spark plugs, nice of the tech to advise me of that one.

On top of all this talk of service, I'm been thinking of trading it in soon. Not that I don't love it but I'm recently engaged and the 'coupe' is getting to be impractical. Don't worry I'll be replacing it with another Honda, most likely 4dr Accord EX but waiting to see the Acura RDX in person.
Who knows?

The dealers in NYC and long island are a bunch of crooks, IMO. Those prices are too high.
Carry your car across the river. You'll pay less.

Any idea what the 60K service will cost ???
Also,Do you guys and girls always take your cars in for every service interval? I know it's good for records and all but I feel the dealer has it set up to get $$$
thanks,,

If you have an 04, like your name indicates....I don't think there is a 60K service.....just fluid changes til 105K
If you're asking about another car....simply pick up the phone & call the shops in your area.... it varies from state to state town to town..... :dunno:

I do agree the dealer gets alot of money. BUT unless you have a really good mechanic that you know, trust, and are sure that they are excellent at Honda's/Acura's and will use OEM parts, I say use that dealer for major req. mait. Only becuase they know what they're doing, and they use real Honda parts and not cheapo knock off's. I could've done my 90k at my regular mechanic who I know trust, and are Honda Specialists for $950.00, but I just decided that I'd use the dealer becuase Im just paranoid like that. That paranoia cost me $1256.63 (btw-that includes a $150.00 detail...). High, yes. But I felt it was worth it to keep my girl driving and looking like new.
For Mait intervals look in your owners manual or on Honda.com - then Ownerlink.
Mike.
