: What's your OCI for synthetic oil?

I'm thinking of switching to M1 0w20 or 5w20. Just wondering what intervals others are using. Please vote only if you are running full synthetic. Thanks.

When I was using Mobil1 10w30 in my 96, I was still changing it every 3k miles from about 50k miles to around 140k miles. Afterwards I began extending them to about 5k between changes up until I sold the car with 167k miles. I wasted a lot of money (and oil, for that matter) but old habits are hard to break. The 3k mile OCI had been preached to me so much that it was planted in my brain for good! Now, the maint. minder system decides the OCI for me on the 06. I just had my 2nd oil change done yesterday (with Castrol Syntec 5w20) w/ 11,300 on the clock. My first oil change was done at just over 5,000 miles.

My 2000 Accord saw 7500 mile oil changes. Down it Texas, the only miles that I put on it were easy highway miles. I sent the oil into Blacklabs and had it analyzed several times and they were always telling me I could go longer if I wanted.

The 2006 will get oil changes when the Maint. Minder tells me to. It seems to be the best measure I've seen yet. I think the system's ability to calculate OCIs is pretty cool. Its much better than a blanket estimate for oil changes.

Still deciding on 0-20 or 5-20.....

Still deciding on 0-20 or 5-20.....

Flip a coin, the car will never know the difference unless it's 30 below 0.

Sat. I dumped the M1 5w-20 out of the accord at 5100 miles and switched it over to M1 0w-20 and a PureOne oil filter. I have rested this change, but fig'ed what the hell. Car seems to like it. and if it will help the wife sqeak out another /8th a mile per gallon ave. So be it. Im going to let this oil and filter go 10k miles.

Every 7.5k miles. I've done the same for my Ody 3.5L V6 with 117k miles on it. M1 5w30 for both Hondas. No worries.

Lets face it the manuel states changing the Dino oil @ 10K miles for severe conditions. That is good enough for me to run the Syn atleast that long.

By the way ACCORDing to Synthetic industry techs the advent & use of 5 20 is due the EPA mandating longer drain intervals, But to the detrement of our motors as it is thinner than a 30 weight & hence breaks down eaiser & does not protect as well.

AMSOIL 0w30 in everything I own!

A little reading for you guys...

The manual specifies 5K for severe conditions

They switched to 5W-20 and 0W-20 for fuel economy and emissions reasons.

All due respect look a little closer the manual calls for the filter ONLY to be changed @ the 5K mark. Also something you can incorp with the use of SYN.

I think you should read it again because it's oil every 5K, filter every 10K...

OK YOUR RIGHT but the point was that SYNTHETIC SHOULD OUTLAST THE DINO.

Sure it SHOULD but it's like working with expired or stale or moldy food. If you eat it, it's probably not going to kill you. But would you feed half moldy food that's probably not going to kill you to your 4 year old? So would you run oil that's very very close to expiring to your car? I wouldn't. 5K under true severe conditions on dino oil IMO is asking for a death wish.

Very true. The same engine, before the switch, called for 5w-30. If you trade cars often, then go for the fuel economy. If you plan to drive the wheels off, then the lighter oil could prove more costly should engine wear prevail. Of course, there's a rebuttal to this by those you have analysis conducted with 5w20 and report no problems. Time will tell.

Amsoil makes some good products and the 0W30 is one of their best. BUT don't let your mind be poisoned by their propaganda. The 20 weight oils from most all makers are turning in superb oil analysis'. To say that they are detrimental to engines borders on the absurd.

Thanks to all who replied and/or voted. I've decided to go with Castrol Syntech 5w30 (it was on sale!) & a 6K miles(10K kms - easy to remember) interval.

Syntech is a good oil and will easily do the intervals you intend to use. You need to be aware that it is not a full synthetic as are some Amsoil, Mobil 1 , Red Line and a few others.

There's nothing wrong with a Group lll oil at all. Buying it on sale is smart.....what irks me is that the Syntec is usually the same price as Grp. IV (true synthetics) like M1.
If you pay the same price as the better product then it's not a good value.

Thanks for the tip & advice RTF. If Syntech wasn't on sale, I would have bought the M1 instead, but our local Canadian Tire had it on sale last week ($10 off!) for $24 Cdn vs $37 for the M1, so it was a no-brainer.
