View Full Version : 5w-30 or 5w-20?
Pkim871 04-04-2006, 06:31 PM I have a 2005 honda accord I4, and in the manual it recommends 5w-20. I went to walmart and they carry Havoline which I heard was good motor oil. They did not have any 5w-20 so my question is can I use 5w-30? They carry super tech, motorcraft, and fram oil filters. Which one should I choose? Thanks
BenjiBoy650 04-04-2006, 06:32 PM 5W-30 is fine, just go get the filter from your Honda dealer.
RTexasF 04-05-2006, 07:55 AM If you want to buy the filter at Wally World either the Supertech or the Motorcraft would be fine......the orange one should be left on the shelf.
Havoline is a good oil and, as Benji said, it will be just fine, no worries.

OCD=Orange Can of Death
n1accord 04-05-2006, 09:03 AM 220k miles and counting with dino oil and Fram filters on a '91Corrolla. Changed every 3300 miles. The engine remains clean and strong. So Fram is not the kiss of death, but I now use PureOne filters on that car.
RTexasF 04-05-2006, 10:42 AM No it's not. I had used Fram oil filters for over 30 years but they have changed to poor construction methods so ta ta!
As I always tell folks there are better filters for the same money and sometimes for less.
Pkim871 04-05-2006, 08:33 PM Went to Autozone instead and purchased Mobil 1 5000 (non-synthetic) 5w-20 with a Bosch oil filter and also purchased nylon gaskets. I think next time I will purchase the same oil and just go to the stealership and buy an oem oil filter with gasket like BenjiBoy650 said. Thanks
BenjiBoy650 04-05-2006, 08:42 PM I used Bosch filters but they came out about the same price as OEM filters so no biggie. I didn't notice the oil dirtier or cleaner with either filter, but I change it too early to tell...it still has the reddish tinge when it comes out.

Make sure the OEM filter says "Filtech" on it.

I think every filter I've seen so far has been a Filtech...Fram should only make the filters in the Canadian market.

You can tell the difference by looking at the part number, I believe.
15400-PLM-A02 = Fram (I think it says Honeywell on the filter)
15400-PLM-A01 = Filtech
Both are available, but my local dealer has been using the Fram. I think I'm going to start taking in my own oil and filter vs. using what the dealer supplies, that way I know what's going into my car.
If price weren't a consideration, my preference would be Wix filters (I believe Wix is the manufacturer of premium Napa and Carquest filters as well - do you know Rick?). These filters are roughly the same price as the OEM filters as Benji said earlier, but have better media and components IMO.
BenjiBoy650 04-06-2006, 08:15 AM You'll never know if they just take your oil home and dump bulk oil into your car
RTexasF 04-06-2006, 08:18 AM Wix is top notch and I believe they do make Napa, not sure of the other. Keep in mind that Pep Boys house brand is a Purolator, not the top of the line, but still a decent filter for cheap.
When I get down to one filter I scour the internet and order a case of them from whoever has the best deal. This next go round I may go with something available locally, not sure which one until I snoop the local stores.

Not so.... closest Honda dealer to me does not use Filtech and we're a long way from Canada.

Sure, they could do just that, but why? It's oil, not gold!
During my last service, the dealer had bagged my old air filter and the 5 empty quarts of Honda oil that I requested they use instead of their bulk oil as proof, I guess, that they had done as I asked. I have no reason not to trust them.

Depends on what oil you use. If you're bringing Mobil 1 I suggest you go watch them - it's as close to gold as you're gonna get.
They coulda just poured the oil into an old milk jug and given you an empty bottle...I mean things aren't that hard to pull off. You don't have to be paranoid like me but that's why I do my own oil changes :) No need to worry about the guy hitting the drain plug with an impact wrench, overtightening the filter with a ridiculous filter wrench, not checking the old seal, not checking for proper oil level (hmmm manual said 4.5 quarts...why did the engine just blow up? Oh did I put too much...) well you get the picture.
A GM tech wrote in to Motor Trend a while back. He said that he always saw people bringing their cars in for oil changes when the oil life indicator still said 50-80%. He took the oil out of those cars and put it right into his own car. If they would take used oil, I don't see why they won't take brand new Mobil 1
stevencrosbie 04-06-2006, 03:21 PM Your kidding right? Taking used oil....OMG~!
I do my own changes. M1 all of the way and it takes 20 minutes.....its actually more convienient to do it myself instead of taking it to them as I never have time during the week.
honda761 04-06-2006, 05:15 PM Thanks to this forum I have learned to keep my oil in my new car at least 5k.
Next oil change is going to be with the Best of the best Royal Purple.
When I had that in my old Mazda6 I swear its revved out better than ever.
benjamming 04-06-2006, 06:23 PM Which flavor of RP? I have considered using it for a couple of changes. I have several cases still though.

Well that is annoying, the Canadian Stealerships are using Fram oil filters labelled as Honda! I guess I am going to start performing my own oil changes.
