With some free time last evening I changed the factory fill oil and oil filter on my car for the first time. Given what I've read in the forums on the drain plug crush washers (replacing them) I had stopped by a local dealer to pick a few up for inventory.

Imagine my surprise in finding that there was no crush washer installed from the factory! Interestingly, no leakage signs on the pan. There IS a crush washer there now........

Original oil was in just over 5,300 miles, oil life monitor was at 20%. A Napa Gold 1356 filter was used with Motorcraft 5w-20 syn blend oil.

Factory fill showed no consumption as shown on the dipstick since purchased, measuring on the same spot in my driveway many times during the first 5,300 miles. Impressive motor that v6. :D

Are you sure it wasn't just stuck on the oilpan? :paranoid: Pretty shocking to see the oil drain plug gasket missing! Your car must've been built on a Friday afternoon!

Mine didn't have one either and the drain plug required some major muscle to loosen.

yeah, mine was really right fromt he factory too. had to use 2 wrenches and a hammer to help me. :paranoid:

mine did have the drain plug washer, but it was stuck to the pan and i had to pry it off.

Mine did not have one either, just changed it today at 4915. BTW how do you reset the oil life display?

Nevermind, i used my brain and did a search on it, resets just like I thought it should. But I think I'll wait until it actually tells me something before I reset it and just keep to my scheduled maintenance.

Check the drain plug. Mine was also very tight. Crush washer was crushed so bad on to the bolt, that it looked like a shoulder on the bolt. Had to take a pair of dykes and cut it off.

Hahahahahahaha.....

On my 2000 Accord, it the was so tight we took an Impact Wrench to get it off b/c I didn't want to strip the head of the bolt off.

I would like to know why to put them on so tight? I mean, they are AL alloy pans. They will crack if you apply too much torque...

Robots don't discriminate! Odysseys have had the same problem...air guns, impact wrenches used to no avail...people were PISSED they had to get their first oil change at a dealer.

I thought form reading the owner's manual that the fillter doesn't need to be replaced on the first oil change, it's done on the 10k mile one. Just the oil is drained and replaced on the first change.

Just change it anyway. I mean, the first oil change is where you get all of the extra metals out of the engine that were floating around since it was built.

Change the filter. Its 5 bucks for that saftey of knowing everything is new and clean......

Technically you're supposed to replace it every other oil change...but that's ridiculous.

Personally, I'd rather change my oil filter every oil change than to remember if I changed the previous oil change. You can never have an oil filter that's too clean.
