Cisco engineer gets prize for longest commute

Mariposa resident Dave Givens makes a 186-mile drive -- each way -- five days a week to his job in San Jose.
The electrical engineer has been doing that commute since 1989, spending seven hours every day getting to and from work at Cisco Systems Inc.

Givens is the "ultimate road warrior," according to Midas Inc. drove home with its first-place prize in the nationwide search for "America's Longest Commute." Givens out-drove thousands of other entrants to take home $10,000 in gas money and a range of maintenance services and products.

"I have a great job and my family loves the ranch where we live," Givens said. "So this is the only solution."

On his long trek he said he listens to the radio, keeps his eyes on the road and drinks "a lot of coffee."


They showed his car....an '05 Accord that already has over 300K!!


So how long is YOUR commute???

My first thought was "Wow, what a dedicated guy - he most love his job and his family!"
But then I realized this gives him 7-8 hours a day to himself...he's either the most dedicated man, or he really hates his home life!

That's pretty crazy...hmm...

well, i thought my 40-mile commute each way (6 days a week)
was a lot, but he got me by a few inches :nuts:

My prince's commute is only about 20 miles each way, 4 days per week. :dunno: BUT it's still nearly 90 minutes each way!! :yes: (3 of the days)

He said he had a Civic before this car & had lots of miles on it too. I don't know how many. He said he drives Hondas BECAUSE of the commute. Mariposa is over near Yosemite! That's a pretty area....but I'm sure there's pretty areas closer!! I wish they had the whole interview!!

His Accord is a 4 banger, of course!! :D

hmmm, 89,280 miles a year.... this is how i figured it out:

186 x 2 = 372 (daily commute)
372 x 5 = 1860 (weekly commute)
1860 x 4 (weeks in month) = 7440 (monthly commute)
7440 x 12 (months in year) = 89280 (yearly commute to work)

hmmmmm.... sounds a bit high...... :dunno: where did the other 220k miles come from?????

can someone find the whole article, for verification????

I've got a really long commute of 5.4 miles each way, so you would expect the Accord to have almost no mileage except the wife uses is a couple days a week for her commute of 60 miles each way. So far three months in and we have 5000 miles on it. Of course her 03 Mazda Protege5 has 85,000.

if it was 100k, i would believe it.... but not 300k miles a year....

my dad used to drive 100 miles a day round trip to and from work, and my mom recently at a job for about 1.5 yrs had about a 150-mile round trip commute..... there was no 300k a year there.....

i figured out my mom's mileage for that commute....

150 miles a day x 5 days a week = 750 miles

750 miles a week x 52 weeks in year = 39,000 miles a year, just for commuting..... not to mention running around doing errands during the wknds and days off here and there......

if it was 100k, i would believe it.... but not 300k miles a year....

unhunh so 6 hours a day out of his life to commute? so if he works 9-6, thats another 9 hours out of his life. meaning he only spends 9 hours at home?

unless he bought his 05 in aug 04. in that case has 19 months on it.

I can't get their math to work.

300k/(30 days *19 months)=526 miles per day.

This includes weekends, there is no way those numbers can work.

There are actually 4.3 weeks in a month (average) so you gave him 4 weeks vacation or personal time...which he probably takes. if he doesn't take any time off it would be 96,720 miles a year to work. Not sure where they other 220k miles come from...maybe he leaves it on jack stands all night and day with the wheels turning.

I didn't try hard though, maybe you can.

Well, it still wouldn't close the gap but if it was a '05 he may have purchased it in September '04 so if that was the case, he would now be in his 19th month of ownership.

Dude guys seriously the guy does so many miles just for his commute, imagine his vacations and you can see 300K. stiller, just cuz he got you beat doesn't mean you have to be jealous :wave:

My commute is about 50 miles a day total. Somehow works out to an hour and a half each way...combined 2.7 miles driving, most of the BART with about 1 mile walking.

By the way, in Burma some of the royalty and other rich moguls are so ridiculously loaded that they put their grandchildren on a plane and fly them to and from Singapore daily for school. You do the math.

i can believe 100k, cause i know a guy that at one time, had a 6th gen accord, with 100k miles in 2 years, and HE'S SEMI-RETIRED!!!! :eek: :notworthy

the only way that i would believe this story is if he was a courier, where people of that profession pretty much live on the road..... there is an article on here about that 94 accord with over a million miles..... that was written about 3 yrs ago now..... :yes:

then factor in another 6 months, 50k miles....

where is the other 150k miles coming from during the course of ownership???? that's why i am not believing the article......

Just repeating what they said....but maybe they didn't put the parts in the article that didn't add up. Maybe the 300K was on the Civic & he may "just" have 100K on the Accord. Which sounds more like it. :)

I could have given him a run for the money several years ago before I left DEC/Compaq/HP. I averaged 300-350 miles/day for well over a year, but it wasn't a commute, per se, it was servicing our customer computers in my territory. Now I have a whopping 8 mile round-trip commute.

I wonder what corporations are reimbursing mileage at today. Back in '02-'03 I was getting $.345/mile, which was a sizeable weekly check. I'm glad I missed the $2.50+/gallon gas of today.

When I was a "professional shopper" I got .29 per mile. That was back in '94-'95. I was just toodling along in my '82...... :D

It's a great job for someone with preschoolers or kids grown. :yes: I dragged grandkid #1 with me & usually had our chihuahua in my purse, since he was a pup.
