Oh my drivers side airbag on off switch install... I thought I explained that a few months ago. My wife needs it and I may request a disable switch for the passanger side too. As her sister has kiddies, we may pack in at times.

Sorry, I must have missed your previous posts on this. Just out of curiosity what procedure did you go through and did you need any supporting evidence for your claim?

I will search again for my old post... I forget the title.

You print out the form from NHTSA about requesting on / off switch installation.

Fill out the simple form and send off via mail... on the form is a FAX number for quicker responce.

No special information, just signature of the owner and VIN.

They will send a form and information to contact private party installers for the dealer or installer to perform the duty.

I will be getting the hardware sent to me as per request, as my dealer has never installed one before.

The service manager will look up the TSM for ordering as it is not a normal part. I may go with ordering a CA airbag warning lense as I prefer it over US.

I like seeing the wee man get it in the face when lit. Hehehehehe!!!

Will put the link to my info as a reply soon. :o)

You can find the form to print or download from the link below.

Just read the info, the link is in the bullited sections of the first paragraph.

After getting our request authorized, my service manager is looking into the issue.

They have kits for earlier Civic that go for $300.00+ and instructions.

For some reason Honda discontinued making them.

Though the list of on/off switch installers should have hardware for a custom install.

Until my service manager calls back with more info on the subject, it looks like the only way to go is through one of the 4 nationwide installers.

The passenger side front-seat already has airbag sensors to determine whether to be activated or not depending on the weight on the seat (ie. for child-seats, children under a certain weight, objects not people on the seat, etc). A light appears on the driver's instrument panel, showing the passenger side airbag is not activated, in such circumstances.

Each state has guidelines w/ regards to age & weight-height, car-seat/booster, etc that can be placed in the passenger-seat of a vehicle. Definitely worth looking into.

My wife has sat in both seats and still gets the airbag enabled where she sits.

Wonder if the sensors need adjustment?

I have found an option to install a NHTSA approved switch. Basically it has a light to show it is active.

I did not want a key operated switch as I am old enough to know what the switch is doing. :o)

Still waiting on the service managers information.

No, the sensors are working properly. Your wife is an adult. Try placing back pack about 10 pounds on the seat, simulating the weight of a small child, the airbag will turn off automatically.

Dual-Stage, Dual-Threshold Front Airbags
Both the driver and front passenger are protected by advanced front airbags that incorporate dual-stage and dual-threshold activation technology. These two features work together in the event of a deployment while helping minimize injuries that can sometimes be caused by the airbags themselves. Honda's sophisticated dual-stage, dual-threshold system is designed to optimize the deployment rate to match both the speed and severity of a crash event. The control logic also takes several other factors into consideration, including the relative seat position of the driver and the weight of the front seat passenger, as well as whether the seat belts are in use at the time.

During a lower-speed collision, or if the seat is too close to the steering wheel, the inflators in the driver's frontal airbag will activate sequentially to help mitigate the initial force. In a high-speed collision, or if the seat is positioned farther back, both igniters are triggered simultaneously for full and rapid inflation. The passenger-side frontal airbag is designed to operate in a similar manner, however a sensor under the passenger seat calculates whether the weight on the lower cushion meets a NHTSA-specified minimum value. If it doesn't, the airbag is deactivated, as indicated by a light on the instrument panel.

Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the dash. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries being caused by the activation process itself.

Side-Curtain Airbags
Standard side-curtain airbags provide enhanced head protection for outboard occupants of the front and rear seats in all 2008 Accord models. A new design for Honda, the Accord side-curtain airbag design first inflates a main chamber, then a connected sub chamber. This design allows the main chamber to remain inflated for a slightly longer time following a crash. Inputs from side impact sensors and a central sensor are used to determine when to deploy the side curtain airbags.

Advanced Dual-Chamber Front-Seat Side Airbags
All 2008 Accord models are fitted with front-seat side airbags featuring a new dual-chamber design that offers enhanced protection for the torso and pelvis in case of a severe side impact. Replacing the previous single-chamber airbags, these new dual-chamber units are comprised of a larger upper chamber that provides improved protection for the chest area as well as a smaller lower chamber that focuses coverage on the lower-back/hip area. A single inflator unit fills both chambers. These new dual-chamber airbags are significantly more effective in helping minimize the potential for injuries being caused by impacts from larger vehicles, such as a side impact involving a truck or SUV.Dual-Stage, Dual-Threshold Front Airbags

I think the generic US way of thinking on airbags seems a bit too much for those who are short and must sit close or have physical attributes not common. As my wife also has limitations from surgerys that make some side air bags harmful because of her condition. even though she is ok to drive.

Our solara has the feature with on and off switch, and she actually ordered it with out Side SRS.

Air bags really make much about nothing. I have been in a t-bone accident and not one airbag went off even though it was completely active.

Actually more small injurys are from airbags. We really don't go fast enough for accedents to be fatal anymore. As body construction and shoulder belts really do more for protection than 20 years ago.

Hell race car drivers don't need air bags why us, eh?

Just curious - what does your insurance company have to say about disabling the airbags? Most give a discount because the car has them.

Yes I will get a discount, as my airbags are not permenantly disabled. There are many US domestics that have switches and still get the discount.

Insurers want your money and are reluctant to provide proper reimbursement. At one time insurance was optional for those who could not afford to pay damages caused to their vehical or property if such as the case.

Insurance companies make car insurance mandatory through legislation, and us car owners are at their mercy. What they provide and what they choose to provide are two different things.

If you pay your premium and you have the ok from NHTSA and all things are proper, the insurance company must take in account that the insured is being responsible to their needs.

The only way to get back our rights and freedoms is to gang up on car manufactures and insurance companies. We are a police state, everyone is treated as sheep, and have no personal rights just a common set of rules to be followed or else. Take a stand and let them know. We got the easiest way of communication, email.

They try to push the numbers game... so many fatalities, yet they fail to account the huge population growth. Everything will go up just because of that.

I feel sorry for the younger gen who are new drivers, cars are easier and more stable than when I had my first license. Yet they are treated like "oh gosh your going to kill someone". Soon it will be like 21 will be the age for an unrestricted license.

Nothing is more dangerous and life threatening as it was 20 to 10 years ago.
They push the numbers thingy to make you believe it is so.
