View Full Version : Thinking about trading out my 6MTs

I am probably going to trade in my 04 Accord sedan in a few weeks. However, I doubt the dealer will properly value my 6MT wheels and Falken Azenis tires (50% tread). I would rather sell them to someone who reallly wants them! Actually, I would need to trade with 04 OEM16s and tires.
So, if I was to do this, what would be a fair trade? the OEM 16s + good tires + how much cash? I want to stay local to Houston. The 6MTs were purchased new from HandA in March 2004. The Falken's about a year ago.
No guarantees until I know I am going to for sure sell the car, but I at least want to be prepared. Any thoughts?

Maybe you could just sell the entire car on your own...you will make more money and not have to worry about the wheels.....

That would be ideal, but I am out of town more than I am in town these days, so I would rarely be available to actually show it. :(

how much did those wheels run you initially if you don't mind me asking?

Do you plan on taking the PIE Ipod controller out too?

Wow, talk about a resurrected thread, LOL. I ended up trading in my Accord for a loaded Jetta GLI 6-speed in late May. I have about 6k miles on it now, and absolutely love it. So far, it has been rock-solid reliable, and it's a blast to drive. Got a great price for the Accord too.

As for the cost of the wheels. I initially paid about $180 each for the wheels (new http://www.handa-accessories.com/accext03.html) and then whatever the tires cost. I think it was a good deal becuase they were new (that, and finding used ones at the time was very difficult).
I ended up leaving the PIE controller in the car. I'm sure whoever bought the car had no idea what it was for.

I'm sorry but those rims are hideous...Do you like them, or have you looked at some others?

IMO, they are much nicer in person. The Huffs are the primary 18's that you can get with the GLI/GTI.
Any other 18's from VW cost and arm and leg to import.

From an Accord to a Jetta...
What's it like? I remember Jeremy Clarkson saying that it was the most boring car he'd ever driven.

LOL, I recall Clarkson wasn't referring to the GLI. It's an entirely different animal.
Thankfully we are all independent thinkers around here. You should read some of the Honda-rant that goes on on the VW boards.

I like their little turbo 4 engines, theyre fun to drive. However VW styling is ugly to me. Wish they would lose some of their roundness and opt for something slightly closer to that of what audi does. Unless I was in dire need of something with a decent awd system and nothing else suited me, I would never take a second look at VW/Audi. Though, I am biased.

people like excitement in their life, they never know when they will be getting a loaner, or if at all from their vw service department every 5 weeks.

I like that jetta, minus the rims.
I had considered one before buying my Accord -- really like the new styling though it does remind me a bit of the corolla :D -- but their reliability is what bothered me.
I have a few friends who own VWs (2 own jettas, 1 owns a gti). The two that own the jettas (early 2000 models) have had mechanical problems from the start. Actually, I should say that only one of them still owns the jetta. The other one sold hers (major tranny problems if I remember correctly) almost immediately after she bought it and got a Honda instead.
Hope they're more reliable now than before.

Well, we are all a little biased, and that's OK. I have owned a TL Type S, S2000, Prelude Type SH, and Accord V6, and as much as I enjoyed those cars, I actually like the VW more. It's got a different feel (some would say personality) that I didn't get in the Hondas. They were great cars, but just felt a bit too generic for me.
I've had a lot of fun customizing my GLI. LED taillamps/blinkers (http://www.tmtuning.com/HOME/medienarchiv/bilder/2702_je-l-101-102.jpg) from the European model, editing the computer settings (from my laptop, no less!) to adjust the bi-xenons, DRLs, window/sunroof controls, headlamp/driving lamp interaction, brightness of the interior lighting, how the XM displays on the stereo, etc. They throw in a lot of hidden 'easter eggs' that I have enjoyed discovering. Of course, that just means there is more to break, so that's a trade-off (so far it's been fault-free, but the dealer does give TDI Passats as loaners :)). Oh, and the interior materials are fantastic for a $26k car...only Honda comes close in this price range.
My spouse loves the new MDX, so I have a feeling that there will be another Honda product in the garage in the next couple of years :) .

I certainly hope so. The Mk4 models (prior gen) had terrible electrical problems. Just awful. The Mk5 (this gen) appears to have benefitted from a new design and build quality standards. VW has certainly had their share of dark days, but hopefully once they straighten out that whole Phaeton disaster, they will be on the right track.
And my TL-S was purchased from Honda under the Lemon Law due to transmission failures. So I only really use repair statistics as a guide, not gospel!

VW's are definitely fun cars and absolutely have more personality than any of the Honda products (even the Type R's, Si's, etc.) Their fatal flaw is reliability. For example, they don't sit at the bottom of consumer reports reliability rankings for no reason. The Passats and Jettas have loads of problems, usually clustered, so some cars are virtually trouble free, while others have multiple problems. New, they're generally pretty good, but once they're a few years old, they're like every other german car (MB, BMW) and require a pretty deep pocketbook to maintain.
After owning 5 VW's I got fed up and moved to Honda products. I'm delighted with the change. I do miss some of the german car characteristics but *love* not visiting the VW dealerships for service or battling VW customer service to get warranty work done. Good luck with your Jetta!!!
