We finally replaced our 9 year old HP 712c with an HP 7960 photosmart. It has this gauge that comes up on your screen that tells you appx. how much ink you have left. You don't even need the computer to use it for pictures, it has slots for the various kinds of cards. You can put in a card, make a proff sheet of everything on it. The fill in the bubbles of which ones to print & how many & what size. Put that in & bingo!! It starts printing & spitting out your pictures! Maybe I'll catch up with the picture printing & get them in the albums! It's pretty nifty!!:)

I am still using my HP DeskJet 672C! I have no idea how old it is. With the price of ink I've bought dozens of printers over the years though. Canon has a good idea of separating the ink colors into different cartridges. A good one from them is ~ $150. I just have to throw away a functioning printer.

Our 712 had finally begun to wear out. And it's done A LOT of printing! It had started making pictures darker than they should be. You had to adjust it on the computer to way too light to get the print to look normal. It had only started doing this in Dec. It's done a great job until then. We've been talking about getting a photo quality one for a few years, but like you, just couldn't throw away a working printer. Before that had a 500 & passed it down to our son when we bought the 712. The old 500 series is still going! I really like HP printers. They're usually pretty stingy on ink too. :)

Still running my HP DJ692c.

Sam's has an ink refill kit for about $19, which can go a long way towards lowering the price of cartridges, but it can be a mess if you're not careful.

Even though I worked for HP, after they bought Compaq who had bought DEC, I still prefer the Lexmark units. They usually print faster for less $$$.

HP users, I've been looking at new printers for photo's and wanted to ask If you don't print for a couple of weeks do the cartridges get funky and dry out on outlet..
My Lexmark color seems to do this and you have pull the cartridge and clean manually then run cleaning function a couple of times to get true color.. I'm thinking about HP since I have the 450ci in my car for work and I would like to be able to use the same cartridges....
Any input would be helpful....
TIA

I have an HP Photoprinter and use it rarely. I keep the black cartridge in with the normal three color one and save the other triple cartridgfe (black plus two other colors) for when I print photos. Even after months of not printing photos (2-3) I have had no problem with ink smearing, glopping or anything else. I was surprised bu letting the printer run on auto for the most part and using the HP software for formatting and sizing the pictures, how great the results were. Just bought a digital camera so will be getting more use. Had just been scanning, cropping and enlarging prints (some form the early 1900's) using potoshop elements (I am a rank amateur). HP has been great for me and there is now an even newer generation out.

My mom's lenox & an epson used to dry out, we've always had HP's & none of them have. My prince explained why ages ago, but I don't remember the details....something to do with the location of the heads in the HP's.

Others may have faster printers, they may have more "dots".....but we have no complaints about our HP's!! The numbers don't always tell the whole picture..... :D

My mom is still using her DeskJet 540. I don't know how old that thing is, but we had it when I was in high school (6 years ago).

Anyway, about the ink. I am having a bigger and bigger problem spending $30-$50 a pop on HP inkjet cartridges. I have begun to see color laserjets for under $400. That is only about a 5-6 ink cartridge difference between a laser and a nice inkjet. I'm gonna consider one of these next spring when it is time to buy a new PC.

FYI - somebody (Consumer reports) tested the Staples store brand black ink cartridges for HP and rated them as "good". They cost about $22 for my model (932a). If you buy the 2-pack and use one of the ubiquitous internet coupons, you may do even better.

Note: the color cartridges did not get rated as well... :(

I like the fact that #56 black cartridges are 3 for 50 bucks at Sams Club... 2 for my Lexmark are the same price.

Costco has had bulk prices on the HP ones too. I like that you can find them all over in a pinch..... even Walmart has them!

Well I have not decided on a another coler printer yet but the Mrs.
came home with a HP1320 laser yesterday.. It's not the best laser and its not color, But it was free... cannot complain!
I guess she needed something to be compatible with her work stuff for when she works at home. So the company paid

In case anyone was interested, I subscribe to Consumer Reports on line and their recommendations are as follows:

Ink-jet -

#1 - Canon Photo Printer i860 CR Best Buy - $120
#2 - Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart 7760 - $180
#3 - Hewlett-Packard PhotoSmart 7960 - $210
#4 - Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 5850 - $150

While I own a HP 960c at home and I am impressed with its performance, I use Canon printers and copiers at work and believe them to be a superior product at a more reasonable price as compared with HP products.

Multifunction Ink-jet -

#1 - Hewlett-Packard PSC 1210 - $100
#2 - Was a discontinued Dell unit- $120
#3 - Hewlett-Packard PSC 1350 - $130
#4 - Canon MultiPASS MP370- $150

It should be noted that in each of these categories, there was very little difference in the ratings between the 4 units.

Strangely, they offered no reviews on laser printers??

Hope this helps...

I just bought the i860 for my printer at work. It was pretty hard to find. It is now obsolete. I really like the printer. It is very fast. It replaced a HP 925c.

Not a single one!! The kids bought the same thing, but a notch down about the same time & their's has been going strong too! We still really like it...the color for pictures printed is nice & vivid. I don't use the plug the flash card into it feature.... he does sometimes.... the kids do on their's.

Wow, it really has been a while, huh?

Cool  Thanks,
I am finally getting the cartridges used up for the Lexmark and purchasing that model.
It is very highly rated for Black and White printing also.

Thanks again;)

We don't print as much as we used to.... since we've owned this one we've gone through about 8 reems & 9 or 10 packs (50 sheet) of glossy, i think we bought ink 3 times.

Well I received the HP7760 for fathers day and just hooked up last night. Very Impressive on picture printing and quality. I also noted how quiet it is and for only 79.99 I don't think it's to bad of a deal.

I could not find any 7960's anywhere :dunno: I believe they are discontinuing
the 7000 series for the newer models with different ink cartridge set ups.

I wanted the 7000 series due to using the same cartridges as my 450cbi in the car!!

That's really a great price!!! I think that's the printer the kids bought when we got ours. If I remember right, they paid about 200 for it. It's a nice printer! If it's the same as their's then the only real difference between that one & our's is that ours holds all 3 inks at the same time. Their's you switch the color & photo ones back & forth.

Printers are almost designed to be disposable nowadays! You can get a $30 or cheaper printer that will print very well, then when you're done with the ink, you get a new printer since the ink usually cost 2x the cost of the printer! :dunno:

It's amazing what they do to printers nowadays, too! I just got a Canon PIXMA IP3000 and that thing prints fast AND quiet! I love how it also has two paper trays so I could leave photo paper in one and regular paper in another.

The printers that don't replace the printer head with every printer cartridge change are usually cheaper on ink.

I've got an HP DeskJet 5550, bought it almost three years ago, and it works great. The futuristic styling is nice, too. :-)

My parents have a DeskJet 722C from 1998, a DeskJet 845C from 2001, and a PSC1200 from 2001. All of them work perfectly, and we've never had any trouble with them. The 722 flat out refuses to die, and it's led a rough life.

I'll probably hang onto the 5550 until it dies. From experience, though, that'll probably be ten years or more!

Ahhh, the 700 series.... we had that!

We use our printer in spurts now.... mostly for photos & reciepts.

another printer....no, the other one works fine...... he just decided to get a newer photo one for the upcoming wedding....

So now we have a CANON (first for us) Pixma pro 9000. It's able to do posters too. He plans to pick a favorite or two of the wedding pix & print them on canvas & frame them for the kids. Nice idea.

"But it was on sale...."

When the DHL guy came to deliver this I had NOT been informed it was coming. I told the delivery guy that if he heard about this address on the news it was simply because I killed my dearest! I kept repeating.... "he's dead meat."

And the males think us females are shop-a-holics!!!!!

It DOES make some beautiful prints, I must admit!

We have not replaced the HP. Which meant more problems.... where to put this monster sized printer he just got?????:dunno: I came up with adding a shelf above the computer desk... Out of MY way & up where the boys won't be. So off to Home Depot for some laminated shelving & brackets, plus some cord hiding stuff.

All's well now.

I didn't kill him......
