Has anyone repaired scuffs on their OEM wheels? I have 04 EX-L 4 cyc with the 16 inch wheels and the rims are really scuffed up. I found a link here to how to repair but the paint they suggested was for Audi/BMW/etc.
Any ideas as to what I should use?
Thanks

Your wheels are just polished aluminum with clearcoat, I don't think there's any paint on them. If you want to paint them you probably could using spray paint.

My EX wheels are painted not polished aluminum. I'd like to know which paint is correct too. Some of the EX-L's came with painted wheels also.

I'm curious to see a picture of your wheels...I'm pretty sure they're all polished.

This is what the wheel looks like.

It is polished on the outer edge and painted on the inside edges.

I don't think the inside is painted...I think it's just raw aluminum. At least that's what it looks like on mine. Either way, the polished section should be what's scuffed up.

I think it is painted and the reason I say that is because it has a metal flake in the paint. :dunno:

Might be powdercoat then clearcoat. Mine has the sparklies too.

There's definately a clearcoat on the wheels, but I doubt that it's painted silver.

I just went out, got down on the ground, and checked it out. Getting back up isn't as easy as it was 20 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!! As jermy said the rolled edge next to the tire is polished aluminum. So is the exterior flat portion of the spokes that you face while looking at the wheel. The left & right edges of the spokes as well as the body of the wheels (where the air fill valve is) are powder coated & cleared. Once you get to the deep inside of the wheel (the inner 3-4 inches) it is raw aluminum and rough to the touch.
There is definite polyflake on the body of the wheel and the left & right portions of the spokes. Where rock & debris hits have occurred on the powder coated areas it is black/brown.....no shine no nothing. Once the top coat is gone on this area there is nothing beneath it to sustain a shine.
The non coated aluminum areas can take a scrape or rock hit and they just show a nick but the same shine beneath the hit. No curb scrapes on mine......yet. Debris hits yes.....you can see where the hit was but it is shiny aluminum showing.

Read the other day in the manual that honda recommend using Honda OEM wheel weights when you change the tires/rebalance...etc. Since non-honda weights will damage aluminum wheels, anyone know what they're talking about?
EDIT: page 240 in my manual
"For vehicles equipped with aluminum
wheels:
Improper wheel weights can damage
your vehicle's aluminum wheels. Use
only Honda wheel weights for
balancing"

I put all sorts of random wheel weights on my wheels from auto shop. They seem to damage the lip A LOT...lots of scratching and etching, leavings marks and stuff...the wheels don't look so great anymore.

hmmm I wonder what's so special about the honda wheel weights that they don't damage. Maybe the safest bet would be using those sticky weights they slap on the inner surface. :dunno:

The manual was referring to the bang-on wheel weights that most tire shops use. They're cheaper and easier to apply than the stick-on types. I don't know about you guys, but my wheels came with the Honda OEM stick-on type of wheel weights from the factory.

Mine came with the wheel weight you see in that pic from Jermy4. I noticed the 06s now all come with the stick on type, I'll have to remember to ask specifically for those when I change my tires soon. Anything I should know about those, damage/harm/type of adhesive...etc?

I had my local tire shop rotate and rebalance my wheels. The weights that they put back on look different than the ones in the pic (old pic). Not sure if they will scratch the wheels or not :dunno:

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've been working evenings this week. My wheels have dark marks that the previous owner must have really scraped a curb. I'll try cleaning first then maybe some paint touchup.

There used to be a wheel repair place in Roswell that I used once for my old Intrepid. However, I would probably rather spend $$ on something else.

Just that they slung off more often than I liked on my Mazda 626. On those wheels there was no lip so stick ons had to be used. I was back getting them rebalanced, at no charge, too often.
Hopefully things have improved since then.

I've never had a problem with stick-ons. I had some "non-marking" ones (felt like they had a plastic coating on them) that kept falling off.

I have noticed stick ons loose their stick with the use of strong chemical wheel cleaners(my issue was with P21s wheel cleaner used one time and they started falling off a week later)
Just my 2 cents

Back to the beginning.........
Any ideas on where a consumer could find the paint?

1st check out Eastwood (http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=411&itemType=CATEGORY) and also Wurth (http://www.properautocare.com/wheelpaint.html) for those high dollar european wheels;)
