My A/C compressor went out in my 99 Honda Accord 2.3L. I just want some general info about if it`s safe to buy a used compressor and the difficultness of installing one. Thanks.

Fredsvt 05-22-2006, 06:37 PM My A/C compressor went out in my 99 Honda Accord 2.3L. I just want some general info about if it`s safe to buy a used compressor and the difficultness of installing one. Thanks. did the old compressor blow apart internally? I would by used ONLY if you know exactly where it came from and that it's been SEALED for the whole time it's been waiting for purchase. The actual job of changing the part is not hard, the gas should be evacuated to be recycled. If the compressor blew up, you'll need a new receiver/drier, the system should be thoroughly flushed of all contaminants (especially the condensor) and possibly the TXV will need to be changed as well. If any contaminants remain, first cooling will be compromised by debris getting in the TXV and then the compressor's life will be seriously shortened by the stuff grinding up the internals of the replacement. the oil balance will have to be restored in the system as well. TexasHonda 05-23-2006, 06:39 PM If compressor failed and was severely distressed (loss of metal w/ debris in the coolant and lubricant), then flushing may fail to clear the condensor, and evaporator may have trapped debris in expansion valve. Condensor may need replacement and evaporator will need be pulled, new expansion valve, and isolated flushing of the evaporator. Good news is pulling these items is not too bad a job on Accords, however this is more than an afternoon of work. I bought a short belt to drive the PS while I worked on the compressor (new shaft seal) on my 94ex. Once you get it right, it's good for many years of service. Anyone contemplating DIY AC repair should peruse the posts and information on autoacforum.com. A great resource. A good basic manual on auto AC repair is essential also. I've found AC repair to be the most rewarding DIY work I've performed. It's technically interesting and a great financial reward. good luck kylelovesaccord 05-24-2006, 12:00 PM thanks guys.
