I'm a newbie to the forum, as to honda cars. I just bought a 2004 accord coupe V6 and I need some technical insight.
-Oil changes, is it a good idea to get an oil change after my first 1000 miles to get out any filings/particles, or, is it true they use a special 'new car' blend of oil that should be left in for at least 5k.
-strange 'knock', when I start my car in first, usually coming out of reverse, I hear a subtle knock, as if a gear is catching or something, coming from the wheel well, what could it be?

Any info would be appreciated,
Thanks

Welcome!

Under factory direct is this link regarding changing oil out too soon: http://www.driveaccord.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=86

I waited until 6800 miles to change out. I would recommend 5000 miles and do the first drain. The factory fill has a good dose of moly & appears to be a suitable oil.

Your noise is probably the self check for your brakes. Look through the bulletins threads to find your description.

Yes, they DO use a "special" oil for the break in time. The last post is wonderful advice!

Welcome! Congratulations on joining the Honda family!:)

Ben,

Thanks for that URL, I just hit the 3,000 mark on my Accord and was itchin' to change the oil. It will be hard for me, but I'll hold off until the manual says to change it. After that, it will be every 3,000 miles, like clockwork.

I did mine at about 3750miles.

I had my first oil change done at 4K miles. I intend to follow that for subsequent ones... every 4K miles.

The dealer's service department recommends every 3K (of course they would) and the Accord manual says every 5K under severe duty... so I split the difference.
