Does anyone know if there's a difference between a "notebook" & a "laptop" computer? Are they different names for the same thing or are they for different kinds of uses? Are they both internet friendly?
I'm concidering getting one before Summer & it's time to start the research. In my case it would be a "poolside" computer!:D

The notebook was the laptop. It's a name change b/c you can't put them on your lap anymore - they get hot. Read lawsuit from certain parts on the body getting a little too hot. Both are internet friendly. However, both are not that friendly, compared to a desktop, when it comes time to upgrade.

Thanks! The lack of upgrade will drive the prince crazy!! Could be a side benefit!!:D
I just thought it would be nice to have on our 2 week vacation this Summer. I can email over the cell phones, but I can't send decent pictures. So having a little computer with us sounded like a good idea.
So in features I'd look for something as upgradable as possible. Maybe drop "proof"... for the plane ride. DVD player isn't a big deal both hotels come with that & CD players. I will want some my own music.
So onward with the research..... I have lots of time, so I can be pretty picky. ;)

For vacations the smaller the better. I have lived with a laptop/notebook for the past 5 years. :bawling: The smaller systems are great on vacations. Since you do not care about DVD the small screen should not be that annoying.
Look for memory slots that support the DigiCam as well. Easier to transfer all the pics.
AMD is cheap ... works just as well as Intel.

Thanks, I'll check that out (digicam) as part of the research!

tonight we bought a portable. It's a toshiba, 80g, 512mb, pent 4, all the wireless internet stuff, dvd, cdrw..... it's bigger than I'd wanted....but it'll do! At least we have plenty of time before the vacation to play with it. It's already all connected to the desktop one. I'm a runt, so it seems like it's huge to me! It has a 15" screen. I guess that will be good when we're tired. The desktop has a 17" skinny panel, so it's has the same kind of screen. I hope to really learn to like it! I'll be able to write while sitting around the pool or out in the gazebo later in the year!:D

More info on the new portable computer. It has a 3.0 processor & slots for putting in the flash card for the cameras. I do have a complaint... the CD burner is much slower than I'm used to. I used it yesterday & it took several minutes to burn one.
Today a cable came in that will attach it to the cell phone. So I think the only thing left will be the ethernet cable. We've got it all linked (networked) to our desk one & loaded with our normal stuff. We started a zeronet account for it for traveling.
Now he'll be collecting all the parts to update our desk computer. It's also going to be 3.0, two 256K, fans galore, new board, he bought two more 80G drives that are a bit different they talk to each other in a way to make them faster. I haven't had any complaints about it's speed, but new stuff is out & he just HAS to update! The new case came in yesterday & it was all broken. So that has to reordered. The company is calling to varify every other order because there's been so many. I realize they want to be safe on who's using our card, but sheesh, of course there's going to be multiple orders when doing an update! Even the card company called. Just makes it all more exciting for him!! One of our kids (the oldest, this time) will get the guts from this one. She's a happy camper!!

Tonight is the BIG night! He'll be backing up, then totally building us a new desktop computer!! This time everything is black. The case is black with clear sides & all the things in front....DVD burner & other stuff is all black. He's adding a fan control that acts as a thermostat for 3 spots inside. Here's the list:
Pent 4 3.0 hyper threading
Intel "mother" board D865PERLK
8 USB ports
3 fire wire ports
1 G lan
digital audio (optical & coaxial)
6 channel audio
1.5 G ram
two 80 G serial ATA drives set to raid 0 to act as one 160G 300mbs hard drive
4 cooling fans
1 processor fan (more like an A/C)
fan control for temp & fan speed
DVD rom (16X/48X)
DVD+R recorder
2 40 G hard drives
He's updating mostly because he puts our family videos on DVD for sharing.
He may be up most of the night, so I figure I'll be a "widow" for the next 2 days. He'll start after dinner, then how ever long he needs tomorrow. The "old" stuff is getting all cleaned up to give away, but I bet he waits until the new stuff is all done. Meanwhile, now I can just grab the laptop so I can still get online or whatever....:D

The new one is all up & running. The new case had a bad power supply so we bought ine local. Now it's fine. I'm sure there'll be some fine tuning......he can't leave anything alone!
I do have some disappointments with the laptop. It has to be set at the brightest setting to see the screen in the shade outside. It also doesn't like being used in my room....probably to many wires in the ceiling & walls or something. It will work, just gets a weak signal.

This is what we had a few months back, then added a double sided DVD burner. He loives his Pinacle Liquid & it wasn't compatible yet....so her returned that & bought a faster DVD burner. Then last night he decided the two 40G drives weren't enough, so now we have two 250G drives. Ever changing........
Pent 4 3.0 hyper threading
Intel "mother" board D865PERLK
8 USB ports
3 fire wire ports
1 G lan
digital audio (optical & coaxial)
6 channel audio
1.5 G ram
two 80 G serial ATA drives set to raid 0 to act as one 160G 300mbs hard drive
4 cooling fans
1 processor fan (more like an A/C)
fan control for temp & fan speed

*DVD+R recorder (now 16X)
*2 40 G hard drives (now 250G)
Hey, at least he's left the "laptop" alone!;)

Tonight the kid will be getting our "old" DVD burner & a drive put in his desk top. He has a laptop that someone deleted main files on & he doesn't have the original software. So we'll probably bring it home & see what we can do. It's the same brand as our's so maybe we can just use our boot up stuff to get it going again.
Thanks for the link.....but too late! We don't have any real comlpaints about the Toshiba we bought. It's not bright enough outside, but from what I've seen, that's common. I know that I sure like having it! Especially when HE'S messin' with the other one!!

The kid's laptop is beyond repair....it woukld be cheaper to start over than to update it. So I'll be passing on the link & info above. He's going to need one pretty soon since his planning to get his contractor's license & start up his own company. He's an electrician.
The nifty video card we'd taken over to add to their desk top won't work. Their board is too old. So I guess that will be on the Xmas list! It's ashame because this card has USB & firewire on it. We've loved it! The drive he added was external. I'm not sure when he'll be passing on these two 40G's that he took out.
