Hello all!

I feel like quite a virgin around here, as I've been a Dodge and Chrysler fan forever, but I just bought a 98 Accord EX V6 Coupe so I figured I'd come and see what information I could find out, therefore I can make the best decisions and know how to take care of it!

I bought this car cuz I need a reliable car for the next year and a half while I continue to build my company before I go back to university. I'm half through my astrophysics degree decided to take a break and try something realistic.

Anyways, just wanted to say Hi!!!!
Hoping my Accord lasts and I don't need much to keep it on the road (Knock on wood but im hoping the rumours are true) - I sold my other cars for skool tuition when I went back :(

Anyone got any opinions on the first things I should do? I bought the car used last friday, 1 owner before, 160km.
I do not want mods or anything, at most an intake but thats for gas reasons. I don't think modding a Honda is exciting, I think they look much better stock, plus u can buy anything for them, where is the fun in bolt ons? Anyways -

Is Synthetic Oil a good idea? Its a must for any American Car, therefore it did me well in the past, but I do not know much about taking care of a V6 honda.

I was thinking this...

Synthetic Oil
Good spark plugs - Platinum tipped
K&N intake
Clean Intake - i noticed when I bought it that the Gas peddle was sticky, Im thinking its gunked up!

I think this should be decent - ?

Thanks all!

Wish me luck with my new toy!
Hopefully it works out

First thing, change the tranny fluid a few times and make sure you're comfortable with the color that's coming out. The tranny's suck on these things...

Don't put on an intake, 6th gen V6 owners report a 2-3MPG loss after installing a CAI.

Synthetic is not a must but if you're more comfortable running it, it's not a problem. Have you seen the video of the Civic that was running on water?

Spark plugs and K&N - stick to stock. The engine is not tuned to receive any benefits from fancy plugs. Also tests have been done that show K&N's do not flow significantly more air than OEM filters but let much more dirt through. It's not a big deal, but you won't really see a difference. Same thing goes for oil filters.

Cleaning out the throttle body is a good idea, common problem on these here cars

Welcome to the family

You wrote the tranny's suck on these things...
can you go into more detail?

Like are they just jerky? Mine jerks a bit switching gear, but other that i think the car is running pretty near perfect.

I find that odd that a K&N gets worse gas milage on this car. Any reasons for this?

I've been driving it for about 4-5 days now, and I really like it. Im starting to see some of that nice quality Honda puts in their cars....

My cd player dosnt play burnt cds :( other then that, im happy!
Cheers;

Steve

The tranny's on these cars are very very prone to failure. You should change out the transmission fluid immediately, especially with the jerk.

Just a K&N drop in doesn't decrease fuel mileage, I was talking about installing a whole new intake system. Mostly it comes from having more air, which the computer senses, which leads to needing more fuel. I still suggest to stick to the stock filter. There was a test done that shows K&N does not flow that much more air but does not trap particles as well as OEM filters do

Welcome to Honda & this forum!

With good maintaince your car should be fine. Do you know if the timing belt was done?

Hondas seem to like NGK spark plugs. I wouldn't waste money on others.

Happy driving!! :D

Yah i was going to ask,
are these engines interference engines?

I was looking through the service history and the most expensive job was 380 bucks but it dosnt say what it was, im assuming brakes and whatnot

so i think its safe to assume the timing belt has not been done.

I was thinking of gettin the kit, its like 240 bucks on ebay.

Is it a hard job to do yourself? I know with my Chysler it was a long job but didnt need a lift so we did it on a sunday with a buddy.

Is there a way to check the belt? Can i take all that plastic stuff off and have a look or is it pretty difficult to do?

Thanks

Steve
