View Full Version : How Many Miles On Your Accord?

LAN_MAN

My 1995 Accord EX Wagon has 105,000 miles and runs as good as the day I bought it. I am hoping to continue driving it to at least 150,000 miles. I was curious......how many miles do other owners have on their Accords and how well are their cars doing (reliability, gas mileage, general condition, etc.)?

These are all trouble free kms outside of the glitch in my Cruise recently that seems have corrected itself (must have frozen something). This number is rising much more quickly now as it has become my commuter car (My CR-V... 210,000kms - trouble free... is now the babymobile and will accumulate the Kms less quickly).

i used to have a 95 Accord LX Sedan that was at i believe, about 90,000 miles on it. if i hadn't gotten into a bad accident and totalled it, i'm sure i could have hit 150,000 miles with no problems. it's never had any sort of problems, not even small ones. i was in 1 fender bender and 1 decent car accident, and it STILL did not develop any sort of problems..and even when that car was in a BAD accident last fall, i came away completely safe...and it STILL drove, just that the police wouldn't let me drive it home since the airbags deployed and the windows were all shattered :p definetely a good reliable car.
as for my 2003 accord, it has 4,300 miles on it. low...and hopefully as headache free as my 95 accord

Hi guys, I just found this site. Bought my 01 LX in Dec 2000 and it now has 88K+ miles. It still starts, runs and shifts like new and only tires and front brake pads have needed to be replaced.

Also bought a 1st gen new in 77. I wish honda would bring back a hatch soon.

have a bullet proof reputation and yours reaffirms this. Does it have the original trans and is it auto or manual.

Would you mind sharing what repairs, other than routine maintenance, were needed to keep this vehicle on the road.

Currently have a 2001 LX V6 which just turned 35,000 on the odo. Nothing significant has gone wrong but did have a number of stupid trim items:

** Replaced right side roof seam vinyl strip twice (buckling).
** Replaced left front side wheel well shield (cracked).
** Replaced right front side wheel well shield twice (cracked).
** more but boring ...

Prior to this had a 2001 Accord EX which had 150,000+ on the odo when I sold it. This was a GREAT CAR. Only had three problems with it PERIOD:

** Defective damper/shock (whatever it is called) very early in its life.
** Radiator leaked at tank top at 90,000 +/- (o-ring seal).
** Front motor mount at 120,000 +/-.

That's it -- pretty impressive ...

Have an '87 LXi with a manual transmission with 232,000 on the original motor. Still runs excellent, no smoke or anything! Got the car free, it had sat for a year, put a new battery in it, and she started right up:) Need to have some transmission work done, don't have 5th gear, but besides that, the car runs beautifully:D

Just picked it up 3 days ago...4 cyl, 5 speed ( a real old School Accord ) Satin Silver EX-L (new school Accord).

Best car I've ever owned. Smooth, fast (for a family man like me...),sublime ride and handling combo - traded an 01 EXL v6, and haven't looked back. Will post pics to the gallery as soon as I wash it and can shoot some.

I'm new here, so be nice!

We've had a bunch of Accords over the years. We drove 2 past 300K, an '82 & an '86 LXi. We just traded an '02 Accord EXL V6 for an '03 V6 with Navi less than a week ago, it has 175 miles so far. It's soooo different than the '02! You can feel the extra HP, the cornering seems more responsive too. I LOVED the '02 & only replaced it to get the Navi, but I'm very happy with the new one.

The '02 had 10,600 with 22 months driving.

The Pilot has 12K with 1 year on it.

Keep up the oil changes & they can go forever!!

Welcome to our group here princess!

I agree that Hondas can go forever.
We sold my wife's 90 accord w/ 175k miles on it, and the engine was in perfect shape! No leaks anywhere.

Compare that to some GMs I've owned, which usually start having dripping oil due to failed gaskets around 50-60k.

How do you like the Pilot? We plan to get one once we have kids, but its hard to justify it right now w/ just the two of us! :D

I assume you've heard of HondaPilot.org (http://www.hondapilot.org) ? If not, check it out...lots of useful info. there. I hope this site can be as popular someday.

Again, welcome to our group. Hope you'll be an active member here!

Thanks, bean.

To say we LOVE it would be an understatement! We'd been saying for 20+ years that if Honda made something to pull our boat, we'd buy it. They did & we did! (We'd been pulling it with a '78 Chevy Silverado with a 454 for years)

She handles great. We didn't like the OEM Goodyear tires. So we put Bridgestone Duelers & she hangs on much better. We sacrificed about 1 mpg.

She's VERY comfy on our long trips & plan to go all the way to the east coast sometime next year.

We don't have any little ones at home & knew we wouldn't use the RES, so we bought a carry along type for when the grandkids are with us on trips. Then we also aren't limited to which Honda we use.

I think we've had about 15+ Hondas over the years. Only one Civic, all the rest Accords.

The Pilot holds "just 2" just fine! She has hauled lumber, sheetrock.... & bunches of remodeling stuff.

Yes, we know the HondaPilot.org. We have been members there for over a year. That's where we began our research before we bought the Pilot.

'94 LX Wagon which just hit 120,000 miles. Runs really well with no major problems since 72,000 miles, when I bought it.

My only gripe is how expensive the 90k service was with valve adjustment, CV boot replacement, timing belt & water pump replacement. OUCH! Of course, next time I won't take it to the dealer:p

o yeah my dad just put in a new radiator but now after i shut the engine off a minute later it starts a small but pretty hard pressure leak. it looks like one of the nuts on the manifold where one of the hoses or whatever goes in. I'm kinda scared of tightening if it's too tight already or i don't really know whats wrong yet. if anyone has an idea, please reply. thanks

You could always take the fitting off and put some teflon tape on and re-install it, see if that helps. Just don't overtighten it though!

What type of PSI is the cap running to the over flow tank as well.
Don't run too high a PSI Radiator cap on the old car or it could put undo stress in other areas of the system. Be sure you use a good quality hose fitting too. My wifes Mitsu leaked because of an old style mitsu hose clamp not sealing well on the newer hose.

Thanks guys. I still don't know what it is. I found a hole in anhose in the back of the engine. i also found an almost constant drip off a little hose above the other one connected to a metal piece. Thanks for you ideas.

2002's aren't even a year old yet?
Leases won't be up yet, warranties are still young.

Try looking at 99-01 model years the hunting will be much better.
Plenty low mileage cars can still be had.

I have a 1994 Accord Sedan with a little over 195K on it. Bought it new...was my wife's car originally and I started driving it in 2000. The car is 100% stock with original parts and still drives like a dream. Easily the best car we have ever owned. The only problem areas have been warping brake rotors and 2 minor rust spots on the passenger side that just started developing in the last year. Other than that, trouble free, and the car is still a blast to drive!

I1...No tranny fluid changes:confused: Auto or manual?

And the spark plugs, rotor and cap original at that mileage. Wow.

At that oil change interval, did you use conventional or synth?

Inquiring minds want to know.:)

Also curious what the market would bare for that high mileage, 7yr old vehicle.

Inspector1
11-11-2003, 03:56 PM
Ok, Auto transmission it had a slight shudder into OD from 150k on but that was under slight throttle pressure.
A old timer that I know (Mitsubishi regional service administrator)told me that Honda transmissions will change shifting performance at or above 120k said to add trans medic since I was at that mileage without fluid change. I noticed at about 130k it seemed to bang OD a little harder.. But never failed to deliver service. Once you get that kind of mileage on original fluid you can do more harm than good changing... Trans fluid= High Detergent and being involved in servicing many tranny's you see all the brass in the pans from clutch packs that most of your friction material is in the fluid and changing tends to wash that away... (especially older Fords- notorious for not moving after fluid changes.
I pulled and inspected 1 plug at 150k and still looked good.
Always used a light silicone dressing when detailing motor so wires didn't dry out. Thats the critical thing I've found with ignition components. Every time you touch or move the wires around they are susceptible to cracking.. I'm also am a fanatic about keeping road film and grease off of coils.... same way with cleaning tops of batteries.
Oil changes where always made with Valvoline/Quaker State or Pennzoil 10w30 whatever was on sale. I did treat motor at 30k with a product from a company in Texas(Tx7) that I was given as a sample at a racing convention... They wanted me to sell for them. It was Teflon based.. Maybe it helped??
I sold car for 3200.00 to a 20 year old... I wonder if tranny's still alive?
I believe the major key was 1 owner 1 driver .. I knew what it could take.. 50% of the miles where hi-way and that car saw some 100-120mph stints so I didn't grandma it.

Say's alot for Honda!!!!

That's probably why I got a ton of calls from California,Arizona and Florida.. They where ready to fly here to get it.......???
No since in stroking someone... They generally go for about 3800 to 4500.00 here for a 96 dx 4 with that many miles. It had aftermarket sunroof and Alpine CD changer also. And a brand new set of Firestone tires.... It had started to develop a slight oil leak after timing belt replacement and I cannot afford to leak oil on driveways at 5 mil dollar estates that I go to quite often + I don't like it on mine either.

1993 Accord EX Coupe 5-speed. Just hit 184,000 miles. Bought new at Honda World in Conway, Arkansas. Wife's dream car until kids happened. Now she's happy in her '03 Odyssey, but she still misses driving the Accord and using the 5-speed in the twisties.

It's unique, too, among the throngs of Accords. It's one of only about 2 of this generation Accord I've seen with body-colored side moldings. All the rest are black. It's common now, but apparently a rarely ordered factory option back then. It also has NO PINSTRIPES! That's right, for some reason, the dealer didn't put pinstripes on this one. I've NEVER seen another '90-'93 Accord without pinstripes. Little things, sure, but it sets this car a little apart from all the rest. People compliment me on my rather ordinary, 10 year old car, and if you asked them, they couldn't tell you what set it apart from all the other old Accords out there, but it looks just a little bit different.

Anyway, 184K. Original engine, original tranny, original clutch, and it'll still get a scratch in 3rd gear. Amazing. It has NEVER dripped any fluid on my garage floor, except for the odd drop immediately after an oil change. I haven't had to add more than 10 quarts of oil between changes during the 10+ years we've had it. It might smoke a little, but I haven't seen it. I never have to add oil so it can't be burning much.

The few repairs:

New distributor at 140,000. Made a bunch of noise but I was able to get it into the shop before it failed completely. Turns out the distributor is one of two items that seem to fail prematurely on this model. 140K isn't bad, though.

Balance shaft seal (the other item) failed at about 160,000. All the oil fell out but I was able to stop right then and have it towed in. Turns out there is a fix for the balance shaft seal (a retainer clip of some sort) that is routinely performed whenever the timing belt is replaced, but it hadn't been developed when I had my belt replaced at 110,000.

2 timing belts. First one at 110,000 (see above), I've NEVER seen another '90-'93 Accord without pinstripes. Little things, sure, but it sets this car a little apart from all the rest. People compliment me on my rather ordinary, 10 year old car, and if you asked them, they couldn't tell you what set it apart from all the other old Accords out there, but it looks just a little bit different.

2 timing belts. First one at 110,000 (see above), second when the balance shaft seal was replaced at 160,000 (again, see above) because it made sense to do it while they had it taken apart.

2 water pumps, because they told me to do it whenever I replaced the timing belt, and it made sense.

New half-shafts and CV joints at 160,000. They didn't fail, but a couple boots were torn and they were making ominous clicking noises.

New radiator last month, at 183,500. Again, I can't really fault a radiator for only lasting 183,500 miles.

What can I say. It's getting a little beat up and is developing some rust, but it's been paid for for 5 years. I'm shooting for 250,000 miles before I seriously consider replacing it, unless it gets totaled or has a truly catastrophic multi-system failure.

Chef, I'm in a similar situation to your wife, although I'm a guy and I'm only 16 and single :) Been looking for a van because I like them and because obviously they're pretty damn useful, but I don't know if I can live without my 5-speed :bawling:

I think your Accord will do good and hit 250K, our '86 did. Didn't know that body colored side moldings were optional, hmm maybe I'll go pay attention to them 4th gens a bit more now hehe.

Curious why did you buy a '93 instead of wait for the '94?

chef1962
02-02-2004, 06:25 PM
To be honest, I really didn't notice the side moldings until after we bought the car, and we noticed that the paint on one of them was pitted. There was also a little teeny bit of peeling clearcoat around the drivers door handle, so we took it back to the dealer. That's when we learned that they had to order the moldings that way from the factory, which is what they did with the pitted-paint one - just replaced it. For the clearcoat repair, they sent it out to their bodyshop. When I went to pick it up I discovered, to my horror, that they had applied pinstripes. I blew a gasket and made them remove them (they were the tape kind). Pinstriping cars was so routine that when they saw a new Accord in their shop without stripes, they just automatically put them on.

As for choosing the '93, we kind of fell into it. We were currently driving a '91 LX with about 60K. We had been thinking about trading to a newer car, and had just about talked ourselves into getting a nice, grown-up 4-door car with an automatic transmission. There might be kids in the future, you know? Well, we looked at 4-door Accords, and even test drove some. They just didn't do a lot for us. While we were on the Honda lot we spotted this green Accord coupe with a moonroof and spoiler parked by the back door. The salesman explained it was the sales manager's car, and it was about to hit 5,000 miles and be put in the showroom as a demo. On the way home my wife looked at me and said she just couldn't do it. She wasn't ready for 4 doors. She didn't want to give up her 5-speed. And furthermore, there sat the very green Accord she had always wanted. So I called back and made a deal over the phone. They came down $5,000 off sticker and took our '91 for a trade. Technically, I didn't really buy it new, since it was a demo, but I still consider it a one owner car.

Another consideration was that the '94s were coming out soon, and since they were a new generation, the dealers would be willing to make deals on the '93s. Another consideration is that I never liked the 5th generation Accords. Sorry, but they're ugly. I was never so happy as when the '98s came out (never owned a 6th gen, but was happy nonetheless). Honda went through a dark period with the '94-'97 Accords and the strange round Preludes of the same era.

Close to 14,000 miles on my Accord. Not one single problem with the vehicle so far, mechanical/electrical wise. As for the body, a few very small chips in the paint due to the roadtrip from NC to KS, but they've been filled in with touch-up paint that matches the body color perfectly. A couple months ago someone did a hit and run on my car while parked in a parking lot. It was very minor body damage, just some scrapped paint on the front right fender, no dents at all. Progessive handled my claim with upmost priority and ease. A few days later I got my repaired car back from the body shop. Looked magnificent. Excellent paint match, you couldn't tell any difference in paint at all. It was amazing work done, you couldn't tell the vehicle was hit. I was extremely please with how Progressive handled the claim and the great work done by the body shop. As far as the interior is concerned, it's immaculate. Still looks like it did when it rolled off the lot, if not better. Highly detailed, clean, organized, and it smells good too. I always get compliments when people sit in my car. They're almost afraid to move or touch anything because it looks that good. I guess being anal retentive about certain things help.

33,000 miles. No problems mechanically. Has a rattle or two every now and then, volume knob and driver's side door weather strip was replaced under warranty, brake rotors are a little warped and I feel a slight movement in the seat when I corner a bit hard. Test drove a 96 sedan with 286000. Felt like a new car, drove great, shifted great (auto), too much money for the miles scared me off ($5500). Owner had an incomplete file of repairs, just for the time he owned it, no trans issues in the 150000 he put on it, just fanatical devotion to fluid changes at his local dealership. He was a sales rep for a big tire distributor, the car has been everywhere,(a few times, too!). My 2 cents worth. :dude:

Sometimes I think, "I'm putting too many miles on the Accord. I should get a cheap beater car to drive the 100 mile rt every day and save the Accord for the occasional drive and nicer occasions."

Then other times, I think, "He11, this is an Accord...I'm going to be insane about maintenance, and I should be able to drive it for 300-500k miles, so why worry? And think how much driving pleasure I'd be missing out on if I parked it too much!"

So far, my second thought is winning.

I see you have 313K on yours so far...I'm shooting for that and more! :dude:

I had a '92 Accord LX in the topaz/dark blue. I also had the 2.2L in it, and it was strong. When I gave the car to my mom, it had like 160K on it and was still running good. The only thing I had to ever do to it besides brakes, olf, tuneup, etc. was the front CV joints, which I understand is normal. It finally got handed down to my sister, who never met a car she couldn't trash and destroy...seriously. I think she finally drove it into the ground with something just over 200K on it.

i claim my hometown of pittsburgh, pa (burbs)....

i work (not live), in philly

i used to go to norfolk at least once every 3 weeks.... sometimes more.... :) my friend is on cruise now, so i haven't been down there since october....

my car: got it in 2001, wrecked 4 days after pruchase. i have averaged 40k miles a year.... but consider this: during 2001-2004, i did 2 6-month deployments (navy), and about another 6 months of cruise workups.....

so, 18 months that i had owned my car, i have never driven it.... i used to go to pitt all the time from norfolk every friday aftn, first with one friend, then another.... drove to pitt, pick up g/f and her daughter at the time, then drove to ohio, turned around, came back home.... about 8 hours each way after all was said and done, and averaged a thousand miles a week mostly, usually a bit more with city driving and random trips to NC after work (norfolk to nags head, nc for dinner or mini golf)..... :lmao:

my car has also been out west as well, along with up to two othodox monasteries.....

Ben do you know much about Benzs'? If so, have you heard much on the reliability of the C240? My Aunt traded her sonata for a 2003 with 47k, she likes it alot, but Idk how long it will go without issue. Apparently it's one of MB's better engines from what I've heard. It's got more rattles than our 188K Camry and 144K Accord, combined. It's never left us stranded, but it's also had more recalls than both cars combined. It's also had its fair share of parts replaced under warranty. In one case, the SA told us the sunroof tray often goes bad and starts leaking, so he replaced it for us right before the warranty ended. The original was GOOD, the replacement actually was BAD :dunno: The 6 disc CD changer (which is conveniently mounted in the cargo area) broke, and it's $480 (wholesale price) to replace it, $700-800 at the local dealer.

No tranny trouble so far. Interestingly, I received a letter about a month ago informing me that I was included in a class action suit regarding the '01 tranny issue. Basically, when settled, Honda would cover tranny repair expenses incurred for those who've had failures and extend the warranty coverage for those whose trannies haven't had a failure....if I remember correctly coverage would extend to 2008 or 2009.
