So it IS a good thing.

We're connected by cable.

This is the NEW computer. It's up & running. There's a couple of little things to work out.....the digital sound when coming over the Bose speakers isn't quite right. It also reboots sometimes in Internet Explorer, it's only used for the Honda info site....but still needs to be fixed.

The first case was cracked & we reordered, the second case had a bad power supply, so we bought a third one locally. This one is even quieter!!

Of course, I really don't notice any speed difference the other one seemed instant anyway. This one is supposed to much better when editing home movies.

Per CNET: 3063.1 kbps (3.06 Mbps)
This is at home using Cox Communications' High Speed Internet via a cable modem.
Cox recently upgraded their broadband connections in the Phoenix area to "Up to 4 Mbps" for their "Preferred Customers", i.e., the basic high speed internet service.
For those needing even more speed, Cox also offers "Up to 5 Mbps" in our area for an additional fee.
CNET shows my current speed as faster than a T1 connection but slower than a T3. This is plenty fast for my uses (which occasionally involve working from home, logging into my work LAN and using some bandwidth-intensive application.)
Using the net at these speeds spoils you very fast. I recently used dial-up on a business trip and was soon frustrated with the time wasted waiting for pages to load.

They mean nothing to me.... I just use the things! This is the computer that my prince built last Spring. It had been a few years between upgrades, so he pretty much did it from scratch. I just sign for the packages as they arrive, then know when everything's here I'll be a computer widow the following weekend!;)

He does a bunch of video editing & likes it to take as short anount of time as he can. Pretty much all our home movies are on DVD, so he makes copies for our family after each gathering.....

This is what the "big" one is:

Pent 4 3.0 hyper threading

I use it more than he does, since I'm home with it.... so if he wants to upgrade, I'm game!:D Usually when he does. I'm only a computer widow for one weekend.... sometimes I just disappear & go shopping. I'll ask if he missed me when I come home & I'll get the stardard, not really listening "uh-huh" if he's in the middle of a troubled area. The cheerful greeting when he's at a "ta-da" spot!

I think we need to make a new rule.... the more gigs he gets, the more karats I get!;)

The numbers probably went down because there are probably more subscribers in your neighborhood now. Remember cable bandwidth is shared.

Do your TV's have good reception? Notice any glitches with digital cable?

Also, run the tweaks from www.speedguide.net to tweak your PC's TCP/IP stack for broadband. It makes quite a bit of difference.

Basically whenever I do a speed test, I get some ridiculously low number like 30kbits/sec, which is impossible, since we are a huge datacenter doing lots of co-location for web apps. I know we have tons of bandwidth going out. It's either websense or some sort of bandwidth throttling.

We're workin' on it.... So far 3 techs, several phone calls, 2 emails.... It's the whole neighborhood. They updated their quam without updating the amplifiers or something like that. So there's a great signa; coming to our 'hood, just none of us get to see it! :dunno:

It was worse when they first did the update. Our pixelation is down & now we can get online. Just could be better. I'm thinking about telling them to not send me a bill till they get it right! No one wants to pay for services not received!! This is week 3. So if it continues I want a month off, not just a week! (that's what they offered)

The cable company has taken no pity on the fact our computers have slowed down... big surprise. They said it's faster than most & we should be happy. Their test was just under 3300. They only say to will go to 4000 anyway. So I'm stuck with it how it is..... my only hope is that my neighbor's is slow enough to make someone do what they need to do in the lines since it will improve mine too.

He didn't believe me when I told him that it was over 8K.

They don't care.

So our hyper speed computer is now just normal! :bawling: Maybe I shouldn't be whining, but I got used to everything being instant....no lag time & now there is.

I wasn't even planning to tell them the current numbers....they made me test it while they had me on the phone.

Oh poo!!!

foreman_bob
07-31-2005, 08:41 PM
P, (Sorry, I can't call you by your name because my wife is the princess!! :lmao: )

The variance in those numbers is not anywhere close to being enough to slow down your average load times (web pages, e-mail, etc). Usually on a cable connection you're going to be limited by the website you're connecting to (Unless your bandwidth is throttled...meaning they put a cap on what they'll allow you to download at).

I'd be looking at what programs you've installed recently that may be making your CPU spike, or your hard drive spin more. Check out MS Antispyware and make sure you don't have any nasties hiding on there.

princess
07-31-2005, 09:08 PM
If it were just one of the computers, your logic would work for me.... Both computers have slowed down to about half of what they were. We've run a few virus things & come up with nothing.

We've left the laptop at pretty much barebones. We put in a couple of things when we bought it & have left it alone!

The neighborhood has the digital cable TV signals messed up too. We know it's the signal....we just don't know what we can do about it.

At least the signal strengthened enough to stop the pixelation on the digital channels!!

Maybe I didn't describe the computer's malfunction right.... it stammers... sometimes it just sets there...not connecting. Both computers do this. Then it will sometimes not have any noticable differences. I'm sure I shouldn't be able to tell the difference between things moving at 4K or 8K.... that's pretty instant either way. Well, maybe a few things.

If my car did this, I'd be hauling it in!!!

What's going to happen is that I will call & whine to the manager at the local cable place. She'll pacify me by checking into getting linemen here. If it happens our non-problem will likely get fixed. If it doesn't happen then a month from now or so, we'll miraculously be back where we were in the speed area... without them ever admitting to anything being wrong.

Patience just isn't one of my virtures!!

psyshack

Cable has a set amount of bandwith per server per area. So if everybody in your area is on at the same time it can get slow. Everybody has to share the bandwith.

Dsl isnt like that. But has about a 20% overhead. So my 6Mbps connect is only good for 5.4Mbps in reality. Sometimes slower, sometimes faster. And its getting harder and harder to find good clean paths thru the net. Seems theres always a server or router messed up jaming stuff up.

I've been having fun with Comcast today!!! Chats, phone calls & emails....

They had to ask me what Quam was! I knew why I didn't know, it's not my job & I'm not a technician! (the proper term is C-QUAM Compatible Quadrature Amplitude Modulation)

Now I'm being told AGAIN to call the local cable co. & get another tech out here. I need a line tech, not the house call kind. I can't ask for a line tech, they can only be ordered from within the company.

This is how I put it to them:

If you've been driving your '03 car up & down I5 at 110 mph quite often & then after it has a regular service it won't go above 80 mph. When you call the dealer that did the service & they shrug their shoulders & just say the speed limit is only 75 anyway, would you be happy? Then you find out they did an update to your car.... it was supposed to make it happier & instead it make it very unhappy..... what would you do?

Me? I'd nag till I'd run totally out of people to gripe to, then start over again!!

I have now left a message for the local manager that didn't call me last week when she said she would! I think she looked at the caller ID & ran!! :lmao:

That speed test seems to be unreliable. I have 30mbit down/2mbit up and i can only get 1500kbps or so down/up.

Some other sites give me my accurate speed, and others are in between.

But some of them are only reliable up to 5mbit or so anyway.
