: lowdown on tweeter replacement?

im new here, but did the searches and cant find any info on anyone replacing factory tweeters in accords. mine is an '02. just got it, but would like to upgrade speakers/receiver. been in many accord doors for speaker replacement, but never tweets in the dash. is it hard? is there an easy mount?

im debating on just replacing the door and rear speakers and either leaving, or unplugging, the factory tweeters.

I'm about to tackle this issue myself...the other day, i pulled the tweeter cover assembly out and it *should* be pretty straightforward. The factory tweets are 0.75" (at least in my 06).

My plan is to replace the factory tweets with some aftermarket tweeters (MB Quart Reference series components)...most likely securing them with hot glue and maybe a metal brace on the bottom.

Princess has the instructions up on here, so take a look. The cover is fairly easy to remove, just be careful to not lose the clips. It should be a fairly easy mod.

thanks, i did see that thing from princess. what im wondering is, is there a factory crossover, or capacitor in line with that tweeter or something? I shouldnt have to worry about a component system with a crossover is what im thinking. just swap speakers and go.

salsi, could you post back here with how well it goes? mines an 02, but ive read it has a .75'' tweeter also, and i also heard there is a company that makes .75'', cant remember who. wouldnt it be sweet to swap without glue or any new brackets!

The factory tweets have a cap soldered across the terminals, so no crossover anywhere else. The tweets are simply wired in parallel to the door speakers. In order to install new components to the stock location you will need to run wires from the crossovers up to the dash locations.

I just installed a set of S60 Boston comps last weekend...the stock location is really not the best place for the tweets for a number of reasons. Reason #1 - it sounds terrible. When I installed the drivers in the stock location in the doors, and mounted the crossovers (also in the doors) I left the tweeter leads long so I could experiment with location - I suggest you do the same. Turns out the best spots were either mounted on the sail panels - the black plastic trim behind the side mirrors - or right in front of the armrest on the door panel. This location will also make for an easier installation...no snaking wires through the cable boot on the door.

A few things about components...the tweeters should be within 12" of the mid/bass driver, otherwise imaging gets messed up. Lots of OEM setups have the tweets in the dash to compensate for cheap speakers. The only thing that should go in the dash is a pair of secondary tweeters on their own crossovers for imaging, but that's getting really fancy and expensive to do correctly. Experiment with crossover settings and tweeter locations before the final installation - double-sided sticky tape is your friend! Depending on the music you listen to, speakers you have and personal taste you may find the stock location suits you best, or maybe not.

Make sure you either get efficient speakers (if running only off the HU) or a suitalbe amp. If the speakers are underpowered the tweets will be loud/harsh in comparison to the drivers, since high frequencies require less power to reproduce (that's why subs need lots of power).

Finally, while you have the door panels off get some Dynamat or E-Dead to dampen the sheet metal.

I need another beer now.

Right on Windchimp,

I installed component Kicker front speakers last weekend in my 05 coupe and the absolute best location for the tweets turned out to be in the doorpanel right in front of the armrest, just like you said. There was not enough room behind the sail panel (connector for the mirror motor) and the stock locations are too far away for good imaging and would require hours of reengineering to mount the new tweets into the stock mount, not to mention running new wires up to it. On the dash, up closer is out because of the airbag.

The Kicker also has an angled bushing that you can use to aim (a little at least) the tweets toward your sweet spot. The padded cushion on the doorpanel mashed down nicely to form nice seal and a great, stock looking (to the unknowing observer) install. Imaging is very nice with VERY minimal balance adjustment required.

The only slightly specialized tool required is a 2" hole cutter for your drill. And the only real drag is disconnecting the connectors for the electric window and light. I never could unclip them so just left the doorpanel proped up next to the door with the cables attached. THis was only a minor inconvenience but WAY better than breaking one of those connectors.

Just allow plenty of time and think ahead. You can do it.

Can we see some pictures of your mounts guys? Did you keep the stock tweeters connected or did you disconnect them?
I'm also replacing the stock speakers and tweeters very soon so this would really help. :)

Here's one...more in the "Show us your tweeters" thread.

Looking good

Did you keep the stock tweeters?
