View Full Version : getting maximum protection out of your headrests: how?
did a search, but couldn't find a thread that'd answer my question...
i like to drive in the very upright position.
even with the seat as vertical as it gets and headrest as vertical/forward as it bends, my head is still not 'resting' against it when i drive. (yes, the whole where it's supposed to be relative to your ears is there, so that's not the point).
there are about 2-3 inches bw/ back of my head and the headrest. i think that if, gfb, i'm ever in a medium-speed accident, i'd be banging my head against it pretty hard. i see a lot of ppl on the road (as well as some friends) driving with their heads firmly imbedded in the headrest, and i don't know how to make that happen without leaning back, which makes it uncomfortable for me to drive....
ideas? suggestions? is there a mod that can be done to move it closer? is your head -supposed- to be pressing against it?
on a related subject, even with head against it, i feel like the neck is rather unsupported. so much so, actually, that i've contemplated putting some pillow-type cushioning around the bottom of the headrest, so that my neck would touch it if my head touches the headrest. sounds like a good idea to me, but i haven't seen anyone do it, so i'm worried that it may be counterproductive to the purpose of the headrest. thoughs?
extra credit question: could i've used the word 'head' even more times in this post? :P
Conundrum 08-04-2006, 11:21 AM now I could be entirely wrong here...but I always thought that your head wasn't supposed to be against the "headrest" (which are technically called "head restraints" now), and that its sole purpose was, in an accident, prevent you from getting whiplash from having your head go flying back too far.
If I recall, its supposed to be aligned with your ears (like you said), and be within a few inches of your head in a normal diving position. IMO it doesn't support your neck per say, as if it did, your neck would make contact before you head, as your head extends backwards from your neck by a bit (therefore making your skull the "point of contact", which would absorb whatever energy from the impact).
If anyone know exactly how the head restraints should be configured in our Accords do please post...I think I have mine set right in my car (driver's side anyhow), but I'm more than willing to make adjustments if I have mine wrong...

Ok... on a more serious note, the headrest isn't really a headrest. It's there for whiplash protection. Yes, you'll bang your head against it if you got rear ended hard and yes, it'll hurt, but at least your neck will be ok. :D
AccordingToThis 08-04-2006, 01:13 PM On a related note:
1. Do the 7th gen Coupe front head rest(raint)s fit on the Sedan? I like the look of them better.
2. Do the Coupe head rest(raint)s do anything besides move up and down? They look like they might flip forward like on some Mercedes Benz models.
I test drove a V6 coupe a few weeks ago, but at the time, I wasn't paying attention to such details. :p
SSMV6 08-04-2006, 01:18 PM The headrests should be interchangable. They can only go up and down and are not able to tilt forward and back.
forced induxion 08-05-2006, 06:24 AM no no no... don't listen to them. I found your solution:

ericrwalker 08-07-2006, 10:33 AM I am still trying to figure out how anyone could be comfortable driving in an upright position.
Try slightly reclined....you have to relax when your driving, it will be a better experience.

*grin* i think that's like me saying, "try writing with your left hand--it'll be a better experience" :naughty:
it's a personal thing. i can't really sit reclined back unless my legs are also a little up (like in a lazyboy). when i sleep on a bus/plane, i also do so with the seat as vertical as it can go. *shrug* 'ts just more comfortable to me that way.....
ericrwalker 08-07-2006, 12:08 PM Do you ever sleep standing? :lmao:

mmmmmmm......... draaaaaaacula....... *drools* :P
gvladime 08-08-2006, 03:29 PM Best is to have the bottom of the headrest in line with the bottom of your ears, and your head should not be against it.
It works in tandum with the seatbelts and the airbags in the car, which all work the best if you are upright (which is wicked uncomfortable)
Hope this helped someone, first post.
