I have just recently an article on seat coolers in Motor Trend, and I found it interesting that people found seat coolers to be more effective than a/c. The article said that seat coolers kept people more cool than the a/c did and that the people with seat coolers actually stopped using a/c and just the seat cooler. This is also saved them more gas because the seat cooler did not use up gas as much as the a/c did. I want to know if anyone had seat coolers installed in their 7th gen accord or even any other accord and their experience and cost. This would be a cool mod to do.

This is the first I've ever heard of seat coolers.

When I used the seat coolers in my friends loaner 05 ES330, they were completely utterly useless. They just made a whining noise (fan) but not much else...

There is a big difference between cooled seats and ventilated seats. I don't know of any cars that have cooled seats. Ventilated seats, on the other hand, just have fans that draw air into the seats to cool down your butt. Cooled seats have a cooling coil in the seat that actually cools the seat, not vents them.

I believe the new BMW 330xi has it...one of my friends got one a few months back and when you turn on the seat cooling you can really feel it. Its one of the features he has that I wish the Accord had as well (of course the awd system would be my first wish...lol).

Surprisingly though, I find the interior of my Accord (black perforated leather) cooler than my old grey cloth Sunfire. With that car if it had been sitting in the sun for a few hours you simply could not sit in the car without airing it out first...with my Accord all I seem to have to do is tell it to open its windows when I'm 2-3 seconds out, then get in, open the sunroof, plug in my MP3 player, put on sunglasses, etc, then close the door windows and I'm off. My guess is it has something to do with the "heat rejecting glass" Honda uses, but either way I like it..lol.

Just sit on an ice pack. I'll stick to my beloved A/C.

If they don't have cooled seats in any cars yet then Motor Trend shouldn't be writing about how people are lovin it so much, since they don't exist. But actually they do...they're on the Lexus LS430.

I still call it a dumb idea...if I wanted to freeze my butt off I'd have gotten leather

Most luxury cars have cooled seats already.

I was replying to this, knew I should have quoted it

I don't know of any cars that have cooled seats.

I think cooled seats should be a standard feature in cars sold in Bahrain!
I left the car for 2 hours under the sun today and I SWEAR I had to keep the AC on and windows open for not less than 6 minutes before I was able to ENTER the car and try to stand the seats!

It's getting ridiculously hot here these days that I think will go way beyond 130F in mid August (its around 120F now at noon).

I think I should start baking cake while I'm at work now..

Ive used them on the Cadillac deville that my dad owns. They are good, but I dont think they would reduce gas consumption as they seem to use air cooled by the ac unit. The funniest part about these to me is that my dad didnt know what they were so he didnt use them. Same with the blue tooth interface and most other options on the car.

Is this the guy who taught me to work on cars?

That's why he taught you how to work on CARS and not electronics

lol reminds me of my Grandfather (Mom's side)...during WWII he fixed Lancasters yet today he can be stumbled by the clock on the VCR... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I think Benji got it right on the dot when he said cars and not electronics...while a lot of older people (but not all of course) may know how to fix an old carburated engine, things have changed so much today (ECUs, Direct Injection, ODBI tech, etc, etc) that cars are becoming more like computers than they ever have been before.

This scares me b/c one day, we will also be "old" and won't know how to do simple tasks that a 10 year old can do. I think its a part of life and that scares me. Things come so fast to me now...but in 40 years....who knows.... :paranoid:

cooled seats is the only feature I miss from the Lincoln that i traded on the Accord.
i especially miss it after my black leather has been cooking in the sun on the 100 degree days we've had lately.

The newer seat coolers drew its power from somewhere else. I forgot where they said its power came from. They were comparing them to seat heaters because like seat heaters they were economical, the seat heaters takes extra heat from the engine or something to make the seats warm, I believe.

I imagine the news ones use some sort of electrical cooling elements, and I think many of the seat warmers work that way as well.

I imagine someone could cleverly design a peltier (TEC) based solution which heats or cools depending on which way current is passed through.

Done and done (http://www.amerigon.com/technology.php) :D I wonder how do they get rid of the heat? In computer application, water-cooling is required to dump out all the heat generated by the opposite side of the peltier... Somehow, I doubt cooled seats have water in'em :D

Current? Those things need current!? That means I'm gonna lose 1HP! Forget it, I'll open the friggin windows!

Well, if your arse puts out 100W of power per square cm like a Pentium 4 does, then you have more serious issues than a seat cooler :p.

They probably use peltiers that are less powerful than those in a PC that don't require advanced cooling on the hot side, but with a larger surface area.
