I am the owner of a EXV6 sedan. I was wondering if there are others of you who have considered upgrading the factory stereo. I am not totally unhappy with the sound and in fact think that this may the best factory setup I have heard in a Honda.

I want to keep the install looking stock and was considering replacing the speakers first.

Wondered if any of you have had success doing so?

For me, the quickest easiest way to improve the sound in any car is to add a small subwoofer. You don't need the big honkin "boom-boom" box. Just a single 8" or 10" to put in the trunk. You can get them with built in amps that just tie into the wires going to the back speakers. This adds richness and depth. This allows you to increase the treble from the factory speakers to blend with the new lower end from the sub. Next would be better factory speakers.

Seems like you and I are the only active members.

This past weekend I replaced the factory speakers with Polk 6.5 coaxials in the doors (EX365) and Polk 6.9's in the rear (EX369).

What a dramatic improvement!

Do the new EX's have the 6 speaker setup with the tweeters in the dash like all past models have? Haven't gotten a chance to really study one yet.

Yes the EX's have the dash mounted tweeters.

I left those untouched. Its difficult to find an aftermarket tweeter to fit that location. Besides, factory tweeter is not that bad.

Yeah...that was my experience with our 01 and 02, the stock tweeters seemed to pull their own.

Coupe or Sedan; Year?

Did you loose any of the low end punch that tends to happen swapping out factory speakers? Are you running factory head unit?

Yes I am running the factory head unit.

With the bass I would say the punch is about the same. These Polks are designed to run with very little power which is what you get with the factory head unit.

The big improvement is the details of the highs and lows.

An amp would be money well spent also.

Sorry I didn't see you had a sedan.
Installing nearly any 6x9 other then OEM in the rear of the Accord coupe is darn near impossable. I have a JL 300/4 amp and sub but they are going into my truck. I couldn't find a nice compromise between weight and sound quality with the Accord. I also have the factory indash optional 6-dics. I also think the v6's use 20watt speakers. My car runs 15watt stock so the sound quality might not be near as good with the polks.

Changing out the factory speakers is really simple. You can go to crutchfield.com, enter in your car info, and it'll tell you what speakers will fit in the factory holes with little to no mods.
For myself, since the car had nothing but wiring when I got it, I'm putting in my Pioneer CD player that I took out of my truck, and fitting the factory holes with some Kickers. Also have and MTX sub to mount, but have to re-build the box since the one I had in my truck won't work very well in the car.
Good luck with however you choose to upgrade it!

Crutchfield is wrong about the Accord coupe rear 6x9's depth is an issue. Crutchfield states an 8" depth is acceptable of Accord 98+ coupes--they are wrong, it would require the removal of the rear trunk springs. Good luck getting the trunk to pop with a spoiler and no trunk springs.

For the 2003 Acoord EX V6 Sedan.

What is the best way to remove the front and rear stock speaker covers? I noticed the rears have plastic clips which look like they'll break with the smallest amount of pressure. Does removing the front door speaker covers give you total access to the speaker or does the door panel need to be removed?

What about speaker depth for the front door speakers?

Are the front speakers a component setup (woofer, tweeter, with a crossover) or do both dash and door speaker receive a full range signal?

I have a complete Boston Acoustic setup from my previous car (6x9's for the rear / Rally 6 components for the front) and, with less than a year on them, would like to reuse as much as possible.

I, too, am happy with the stock stereo system. However, I've replaced the stock speakers in every car I've owned and the difference has been night and day.

Sorry for the length... just wanted to touch all the bases.

does anyone know the setup for the door? this is kind of an old post but if someone knows it would help. I was planning to put some components into the coupe and i was going to put the new tweeters on the door. If the speaker on the door doesn't get full signal and only the mids then i have to rerun the wires to the head unit. if you guys know it would really help.

We changed all the door speakers in both the '02 & the '03. Went with Infinitys. (3 way) It was enough to improve the sound without replacing the head unit.

I can get you door panel instructions, but I'd have to email them. PM me with the year & model & I'll get them to you.

There's still some technical difficulty with posting these things.

How do you take front door speakers out on 2003 Accord DX?
Looks like they are glued or something!

There seems to be a lot of posts about upgrading speakers, but what about the stereo? Has anyone switched out the stock stereo on the 07? I was thinking about doing these:

Has anybody installed one of these adaptors? I want to know how difficult it would be since it would mean rewiring everything, including the a/c controls. I like the adaptor b/c it keeps the stereo looking integrated into the dash rather than just being an add-on. The only thing is, I would miss having that big volume knob in the middle! But I would rather keep my big cubby than the knob.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here are some stock pics:

If anyone has pics of a setup with the adaptor, please show! Thanks.

Forget the adapter...it's ugly and pretty much guaranteed not to match the plastic on the rest of the car. Just run something to clean up the signal like a JL CleanSweep and then run it to an amp.

depending on how many RMS wattage your speakers are. an AMP would make your sound nicer. my car is currently running two Sets of Rockford Fosgate Power T162S 6x8 Component powered by a Rockford Fosgate Power T4004 4 Channel Amp. running Through Some Monster Cable RCA. My Subs are Out of this World. 2 12" JLw7 powered by 2 1000wRMS JL 1000/1 Slash Seires Amp. VERY nice sound. maybe a bit too much Bass fOr some people, but i like the sound. it Cost a lot of money but it was money well spent. It is in a Lincoln Navigator However, it would probably sound different in an accord. my old accord had a 12" JLw6v2 powered by a JL 500/1 Slash Series Amp. no New speakers though. more Bass than Vocal. but it was okay.
