View Full Version : 2006 EX-L Coupe Navigation Retrofit
Adams06Coupe 09-05-2006, 06:05 PM Good evening, everyone! It's my first post here, so hopefully something good can come from this thread. I've been reading up a bit on these forums and some posts on another board (something like V6power, maybe?) about installing the factory nav system into my Accord, and I have decided to take the plunge. I would have bought a model with Nav in it, but no dealerships in my area had any, and with the options I did get for the price I paid...well, I couldn't pass it up! Anyway, I have ascertained that I need (in general) the following:
Navigation Screen/Control Module
Upper dash assembly with cutout
Upper dash display module
DVD/Computer Module for trunk
Homelink/Microphone "sunglass holder" module
Steering wheel buttons
I also understand that I need the following custom wiring harnesses:
Steering wheel controls
Microphone
Head unit to DVD module
Upper "sub display"
What I'm curious about, though, is the year interchangability of these parts. Is the navigation display for, say, an '04 different than what would have come in my '06, and if so, would the one from an '04 still work? What about the other parts?
Does anyone have a link to a complete writeup on this process? If not, then once I'm done, I'll be sure to post one with lots of pictures!
Thanks!!
stevencrosbie 09-05-2006, 06:30 PM Hey, welcome to DA.
The conversion can be done, but it will cost you serious money. You have an 06...why didn't you just get NAVI if you thinked you wanted it. Now you are screwed. The NAVI in the 06 models is different software wise. Its much more advanced than the older NAVI in the 03-05 models.
Good luck. It's a ton of work. If it was me, I'd do without, get a portable model, or trade that 06 in on a clearance 06 w/ NAVI.....
Remember....all warranties will be viod messing w/ the car electronics....I'm sure you don't want that.
VTECaddict 09-05-2006, 06:34 PM the 06 navi has an updated interface, faster processor (i think) and integrated Zagat restaurant guide. not sure if the old display would be compatible with the newer Navi, so best bet would be to just get the whole set together (either 03-05 navi or 06+ navi) instead of mixing and matching.
the 06+ navi screen has a silver trim around the LCD whereas the previous years only had black trim. another thing to keep in mind is the 03-04 does NOT have illuminated wheel controls, only 05+. also, coupe dash lighting is red and sedan is greenish, so make sure you get that right too so you dont have a frankenstein looking dash at night. :D
ItsaHonda 09-05-2006, 07:07 PM coupe dash lighting is red and sedan is greenish>>>
Door switches light up green, but the rest of the dash is white in the sedan.
Adams06Coupe 09-05-2006, 07:29 PM Yeah, I know that it's serious work, but the actual monetary cost isn't THAT much, from what I can tell (comfortably less than $2000 for the parts). I would have bought a model with nav, but this WAS a clearance 06, and it's pretty slim pickins' around here, especially with the options I wanted (5-speed in graphite pearl).
I knew it wouldn't be a good idea to mix, say, the screen from an '06 with the DVD of an '04, I was just wondering if an '04 system (screen+dvd unit) would fit in. However, if the '06 nav unit is upgraded, I'll hold off until I can get my hands on one.
On a technical note, nothing I do to the car can actually "void" the warranty...an individual claim can be denied if they can make a valid (in the eyes of arbitration, if it comes to that...) claim that an action I took had any direct or a reasonable strong indirect effect in causing whatever problem I'm taking it in for. In other words, if my front suspension discintegrates, they cannot simply deny my warranty claim because I've changed out these parts. However, if I have a problem that involves the ECM, they might (probably would, really) have a valid claim that my tapping into the VSS and other such wires could have caused the problem, depending on what it is. Not to be argumentative in the least, just wanted others to be aware that you can't actually "void" your warranty.
Thanks for the feedback! Is there any place I should be checking besides eBay for these items? Was my list complete, or should I be looking for other parts as well?
stevencrosbie 09-05-2006, 07:32 PM It looks good. I know there's a guy on Acurazine (I will look up the thread) that did the NAVI convesion for the TL. It was a lot of work.
You will need the wiring harness for the NAVI system. The wires are not in your current car.
Ebay is your best bet, but some parts are dealer-only parts and you have to buy from them.
samsonskeg 09-05-2006, 07:35 PM Umm.. you should trade back the car and get the navi one.
If you havent put some serous miles on it already, go back and tell the dealer that you wanted the navi one instead and will pay for the extra cost. Cuz in the long run, you wont have any issue with the warantly problem with the car.
stevencrosbie 09-05-2006, 07:35 PM This is an Acura Link (http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140796&highlight=navi+conversion)
This guy did it to his TL.
Adams06Coupe 09-05-2006, 07:38 PM Yeah, I know about the harness, but from what I can tell one guy had luck using a few runs of CAT-6 cable and some generic Molex connectors in creating his own harness that just added the wires that were missing from the existing factory harness. From what I understand, there are just some missing connectors; the existing connectors for the radio will plug into the new display unit, it just needs some additional connectors (and wires, of course!) to the DVD unit and other miscellaneous parts. Is that right?
For the dealer only parts, how would I go about finding part numbers and such? Also, someone had recommended an Electrical Diagnostic manual or something of a similar name...any idea where I can pick one up online?
Thanks!

I hear what you're saying, but there ARE no navigation-equipped models in this area, or I'd have bought it. With the 07's being out I was not able to find a vehicle with everything I wanted. I figured it would be a whole lot less effort (and much more in my area of expertise!) to add navi after the fact rather than a manual transmission ;)
stevencrosbie 09-05-2006, 07:45 PM Yeah, it seems that you have all of the parts. The glorious reason to get the harness is you don't have to "find" those plugs.
If you really want to do this, I really suggest you get the complete Honda manual for the car. At least the electrical manual. This will tell you about all of the wires. Take it from someone who's been behind the 06's dash, you will have no idea what wire does what.
You can get the manual at the dealership. That's gonna the best manual you can get for this job. It looks like you have the parts list. All you need is to find these parts....
Adams06Coupe 09-05-2006, 07:50 PM Yeah, sounds like you're right. If I can get my hands on a full harness that I can strip down to what I need for a reasonable amount of money, I'll go that route. Otherwise, it'll be strip-crimp-solder-shove for quite a while for me!
I'd go to the dealership to get it, but it's across town (even more than that, actually) and I'd rather get one online if I can. Know of anyone that would sell the service manual and electrical troubleshooting manual?
samsonskeg 09-05-2006, 07:58 PM cant the dealership find you one thats with navi?

lol. I had the same problem trying to find an 06 ex v6 6mt coupe w/o navi in the color I wanted. I ended up with one w/ navi. This time of year, sometimes the cars just arent there and its more expensive to have them transported than to just wait for the 07's or add nav.

There are a couple different manuals you might want. I think you already have that figured out tho, but what you need to watch out for when searching for your manuals is that youre selecting the one that is right for your vehicle. From what I can tell, theres a different manual for V6s and 4cyl. a couple that I have found are listed below.
service manual (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-Accord-2003-2006-Service-Manual_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34223QQihZ010QQi temZ200023522684QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW)

Adams06Coupe 09-06-2006, 05:17 AM Thanks. I just ordered the electrical manual from Helminc.com, and I'm currently the winning bidder on the service manual :)
Thanks guys...if you have any suggestions or tips I'm all ears; I'll have the writeup and pictures ready to go as soon as I get all of the parts in!
samsonskeg 09-06-2006, 05:21 AM I wish you good luck on this.
Maybe im just like really really lazy when it comes to this kind of work :P Id rather trade the car with navi then do all the woork myself.
Adams06Coupe 09-06-2006, 06:23 AM I get what you're saying, but the money I'd lose would be astronomical, as I'd have to buy an '07 to get it. :)
I would be interested in see the amount of work involved with this as well and the cost too. I'm in the same boat as you, I was given such a fantastic deal on my accord, that I had to take it and forgo the navi which I wanted as well. I doubt I would ever be able to let myself spend the money on the parts to install it plus my time is so limited I don't know if I'd ever get it in, but I'm still interested in knowing how much the total cost is and seeing the amount of work involved.
I also wish you luck, its going to take a lot of work.
mido101279 11-06-2008, 12:18 PM Hi Adam can you please add photo or wiring digram for the nav unit from the back side there acconector blue coloure please
likai19870615 11-06-2008, 09:10 PM I am doing the same thing now, the only thing I don't have is the subdisplay harness...
Dreamacre 11-07-2008, 10:18 AM Wow! I wish you luck!
Me, I would have spent $350 and gotten a Garmin Nuvi.
