View Full Version : Stock CD Player = No Burnt CD's
G Stone 09-19-2006, 04:01 PM I have been reading here and it seems like a lot of people have this problem. My CD player will only play one brand of burnt CD (Maxwell). Just wondering if Honda made the CD player so that people could not play their illegally burnt CD's. Seems weird that they don't work. Also, what aftermarket decks are good and look good in the 1999 Honda Accord. Thanks in advance!
stevencrosbie 09-19-2006, 04:04 PM The 99-00 CD players had a hard time w/ certain types of burnt CDs. The 01-02 players would read just about anything ok. I think it has to do w/ the lazer that was used in the older players.
You will have to go w/ a newer deck or get an afternmarket one. If it was me, I'd go aftermarket as long as you don't have steering wheel controls. Aftermarket will allow you to get XM radio, external aux imput, and a bunch of other nice features.
ASlAN l3OY 09-19-2006, 04:21 PM hey i kinda have the same problem too but mine is the 06 model. i have a bunch of cd's that i burned and it played perfectly in the pilot, even if it was scratched up. but when i brought it over to the accord, things were different. they would play and all, but sometimes it would skip. then it started happening more frequently. so i reburned the disc. i used TDK discs, brand new ones. same thing happened. so i burned it real slow, at 4x which is the slowest my computer burner goes. it got better, but skipping was still there. then i went out and bought Sony discs, it's gotten a lot better, but it's still there. i want to take it to the dealer and tell them the problem, but in the owners manual, it says that certain CD-Rs don't work in the player since there are so many types and brands and i'm afraid that's what they're going to tell me. so what do you guys suggest, go to the dealer anyways? or just buy a CD-R burner (my two computers are laptops so the burners come from the drive it has. thanks guys.

I do have the steering wheel controls. Is there anyway to get those controls working with an aftermarket deck? I really like the controls on the steering wheel but I want to put my system in the car so I need an aftermarket deck.

No problem here, nearly all my CDs are CD-Rs. Some Sony but recently have been the Black Memorex CD-Rs, they all work fine, although it could be my imagination but the Black Memorex sound better :dunno:. I only have one CD that has noise on certain tracks and that was one of the older Sony's.
ASlAN l3OY 09-19-2006, 07:08 PM at first, i thought i was going over bumpy roads, but then i quickly realized that even if i'm waiting at a red light, the track will skip. could it also be how the CD-Rs these days are made. about 7 years ago, i got my first burner, and i bought sony discs (which is why i got sony discs again this time around) and they were dark electric blue on the underside of it. but now ALL blank discs are the seafoam greenish color, even the new sony discs. actually the dark blue ones run fine the accord. could it be my imagination that the old blue discs had thicker recording layers and therefore records better, or am i just talking out of my tailpipes.
Schicky 09-19-2006, 07:12 PM It's happened to me too. I suggest trying the (+) instead of (-) DVR's. They are the latest types to come out so maybe they will work better? I thought I might give them a try the next time I burn a disc.
GlennD 09-19-2006, 07:36 PM CDs come in many qualities. Some remarketers like Memorex go with the cheapest this week. Tayoyungen (spelling) are best. They are usually sold to others as OEM. As for retail, you take your chances. Made in Japan is usually safe but getting very rare. A co-worker brought in some PC Club bulk that were so cheap that the silver plating was flaking off.
VTECaddict 09-19-2006, 10:37 PM mine plays my TDK CD-R's plus all my Memorex and no-name CD-RW's without a problem.
GlennD, i think Taiyo Yuden is what you're shooting for. :D
ASlAN l3OY 09-19-2006, 10:43 PM well i guess i should just invest in a good cd burner and see how that goes. thanks for your help guys
jermy4 09-19-2006, 11:22 PM I don't have this problem in my car. All my CDs have played perfectly and all the CDs in my car are copies. I use copies since I tend to be rough on them and also if someone breaks into my car and steals them I still have the originals at home and can just make new copies.

You have an 05. CD-R's play with no problems in the 7th gens.
Asian |3OY, if you are having problems with CD's skipping, try cleaning the laser lens on your CD burner and CD player and burning at a lower speed.
Mine doesn't accept just any CD-R brand. With some I have to struggle to get it to play. I just keep it there, skip tracks all the time while its displaying the "DISC" error until *sometimes* all of a sudden in plays (probably after like 10 minutes).
The interesting thing is it then never plays track 1. I have to always skip to track 2.
I found it depends on 1) brand of discs. 2) burner. 3) software used. 4) method of creation.
Never got to find a perfect match of those since I hardly ever use the cd now anyway.

just out of curiosity, how do i clean the lens on the cd player, i know there are solutions that i can get at a computer store. i have never used it before. do i have to take apart the headunit or do i slide a disc into the slot and it'll clean. again, i have never used something like this before, and thanks for your input :)
in4mation 09-20-2006, 01:05 PM This is strange. I have discs that were burnt on an HP external CD burner about 8 years ago. Discs are of different brands (Sony, TDK and Maxwell). All of them play virtually flawlessly. The only complaint that I have is that the changer arm leaves a mark on the top (label side) of the disc which is irritating. Of course there is no problem playing stuff that you buy, etc. I still have a gripe about the display not showing the elapsed time of the disc, though. :dunno:
I haven't had any problems with ripped CDs in my 2003 or my 2006. I use Roxio burning at 16x on CDs from Memorex, Staples, and TDK. I think I've used other brands. I get whatever is on sale. I always get CD-Rs, not CD-WRs.
ASlAN l3OY 09-20-2006, 02:15 PM hey i was just wondering, do blank CD's get old. the TDK cds are like 4 years ago. i bought a 100 pack spindle at costco and it was buy 1 get 1 free. so i ended up with 200 cds and i'm just barely starting on the 2nd pack. so i just bought sony discs and tried, and like i said, it got better a bit.

Yes, some do.
SSMV6 09-21-2006, 07:24 AM The inks used in most cheap CD blanks deteriorate very quickly and have a shelf life of about 10 years. Over time the recorded CD would start skipping for no reason at all. Unrecorded blanks should have a longer shelf life.
