View Full Version : door pins -with door handles that unlock
mnkyman 10-01-2006, 09:29 AM hey there im new to this forum and i also just got my first car, a 2006 accord SE
i read a forum thread, i believe it was on this forum, about cutting your door pins to have them flush, but someone had also made a post about just changing out your locks for VW locks
i was wondering would this make it so that when u pull the door handle, they unlock the doors?
unlike some of you, i dont wanna risk my battery going out and having to crawl out through my trunk

LMFAO!!!
Cant you just pull the door lock up to open the door?
funnyperson1 10-01-2006, 10:48 PM Well he wants to do the mod to shorten the door lock pins so that they don't stick up over the side panel when the doors are lock. In this case, there is nothing to grab to pull the door lock up.
Ahh. I was wondering what pins he was talking about. Whats the point of that?

I don't understand??? I don't want to sound sarcastic, but if you cut the door lock pins, then you are going to have to crawl out through the trunk if your battery dies.
And why would you want to cut the door lock pins anyway???

I haven't heard of any way to make the door handle unlock your door. You might want to leave the pins a little less than flush. About 1/4" should do - you can experiment. It doesn't take much force to pull them up. You have to decide if that defeats the purpose of the mod. I put in the aluminum pulls I got from V6net and screwed them down about twice as far as stock. In my case I didn't want to hide them entirely. I thought the aluminum lock pins added a little needed contrast to my black interior. My wife liked them too, and I had to get a set for her 03 coupe.

If you've seen European cars all you have to do is pull the door handle and if the door is locked, the first time you pull it'll unlock and the second time the door will open.
I like putting my hand on the window and having the stupid pin prevents that. If you're short and sit far up by the steering wheel, you don't have this problem.
mnkyman 10-02-2006, 10:10 AM do u have a link/pic of these? ..hmm i wonder how they would look against the black, also easy to install?

Here you go. It looks like they're out of silver right now. You could check with them as to when they might do another run of the silver ones. Very easy to install. Screw the stock ones off and screw the new on.

European cars, heck my Explorer had that (well actually it unlocked and opened on the first pull), and it is a feature I miss a bit. I can't count the number of times I have tried to open the door and then realized its still locked.
mnkyman 10-02-2006, 02:44 PM ya my cousin has door pins for his volvo..so that when he locks it they go flush..but he never locks his doors..kinda making it useless...unless u want to lock someone in the back seat ( the back doors dont unlock automatically when u pull the handle)..lol then again the volvos also have the headrests that pop down with a push of a button
..oh ya and the front unlocks and opens the door all in one pull
touch of grey 10-02-2006, 03:27 PM I have been driving for over 30 years and never had a car battery die completely while I was in the car. I've had them drain down while driving, but that would give you plenty of time to hit the unlock button. Even if the battery doesn't have enough juice to start the car, it will have enough to unlock it.
stevencrosbie 10-02-2006, 03:44 PM I did not make this mod. It is something I coppied off of Acurazine and the person who get's the credit is JDM5lugHatch.
Ok........ So I have been annoyed with the placement of the door lock button since day one. I figured I would mod the button to see if I can get it flush. Before begining my venture I figured it would be best to order a new button just in case I screwed the first one up.
Well the door lock button came in today so as soon as I got home I jumped right into it. This is a very easy mod and you really shouldn't need any parts unless you mess one up. It was approx. $5 but like I said you should not need it unless you mess up which is truely hard to do.
I have taken some pictures (while limited) to give everyone an idea of whats going on here.
The first thing you will need to do is remove the door panel. This is very easy to do. Just remove the 4 phillips head screws from the panel and pull starting at a lower corner of the panel all the way around until it's loose and lift up. It is not necessary to disconnect anything just let the panel hang. Check to make sure none of the clips stayed in the door itself, if so just remove them with some pliers.
This is a pic of the new button from the dealership.

Once you have removed the panel unscrew the button from the rod/cable.
I used the new button to measure how much I wanted to cut off.

I mounted the button in a vise and just used a hacksaw blade to cut the button. I was too lazy to pull out my dremel for cutting the buttons. Plus nobody will see the bottom of the buttons anyways.

Next just screw the modified button back on and reinstall the door panel.

Here is a picture of the rear door before I modded the button unlocked.

Here is a pucture of that same button but locked.

Here is a picture of the button modded (unlocked)

A couple more pictures of the button modded (locked)

Hope everyone will enjoy this mod like I know I will. Finally my elbow won't feel like something is digging at it when I rest it up on the panel.

They say that its hard as hell to open the door underwater anyway and that one should always carry a small hammer or something to break the window with just incase that ever happens. If you're so paranoid about being locked in your car why do you want the mod so bad
BenjiBoy650 10-02-2006, 06:07 PM Doors are hard to open underwater because people don't realize there's a pressure difference. You have to wait until the pressure equalizes then it opens like normal.

Stop cussing, it's dumb. Expand your vocabulary beyond all those stupid words that I learned in elementary school.
mnkyman 10-02-2006, 08:03 PM as for doing the mod, i wanted to see if there was a way to change the lock/handle to a point were it would unlock when u pulled the handle
and as for the cussing, i am contrite, im just so recalcitrant to changing my normal speech for a forum, but ill attempt to mitigate the words
wasnt meant to disparage (just saying it for a more motley speech)
but your right i need some sense of reticence when making public posts/statements
BenjiBoy650 10-02-2006, 08:07 PM Nice, now time to work on your grammar
mnkyman 10-02-2006, 08:24 PM heeyyy i talk good
lol..
^any forum ive ever been a part of, ive always been told/asked about my bad grammer/spelling/w/e , but the truth is ..its always in forums.. i dont talk like this in real life
grammer..w/e its just short text (like IMs), spelling..i dont have time to go back and edit, and w/e..well u get the picture
stevencrosbie 10-02-2006, 10:30 PM You shouldn't have to go back and fix your grammar mistakes. They shouldn't happen at all. Now...spelling....I can look past that as long as your posts are not full of "slang" or any other "folk" talk that I cannot stand.
mnkyman 10-02-2006, 10:47 PM sometimes when im making posts, i talk in long incoherent sentences, mostly cause the shear amout of facts/ things i want to say, ...kinda like if you were doing a research paper, except in a research paper, you go back and smooth it out into nice sentences...lol no need of that here
touch of grey 10-03-2006, 04:07 AM lol what happens if u happen to drive in a lake (even if u are a good drive..say for instance someone runs u off the road)..and your battery instantly dies...then your ****ing screwed..you wouldnt have time to unlock the car..cause u would be trying to get back on the road..and you would have to break a window to get out..cause you wouldnt have time to crawl into the turnk and get out that way...
If your that paranoid, leave the locks alone.......

It sounds like it would be a problem, but in testing, most car electronics will work for 10 to 20 minutes after submersion. If you dont beleive it, try it sometime in a controlled environment. I think I saw that on the discovery channel once where they did a test in an olds ciera.
I had a cousin who was so worried about this that everytime she was about to drive over a bridge, she would roll down the windows.

its the fact that i want my door handles to unluck the door as well, and have door locks that are flush with the door, im not so paranoid, like driving over a bridge or anything, its just like...what if something happens, you dont wanna regret doing something that could jeaperdize(sp?) your health, just because you wanted to make your car cool
..if i can find a way to make it unluck when i pull the handle, then i will do the mod, if not..ill just say screw it
Why dont you figure out a way to hook up a hinge to the lock rod and handle cable so that when you pull the handle it applies pressure to the lock rod and if its down it will force it up? Actually sounds like a fairly simple design, but maybe if its that easy, Honda would have done it. Either way its worth looking into, if I had the time I would be interested in finding a way to make it work, since I dont like the knobs either but I would like the ability to unlock them with the handle.

maybe when i get some free time (lol after xmas sometime) ill open up the door panels and see if theres an easy way to rig something...but i highly dought it..or like u say..honda would have done it...
if u plan to go after this quest before xmas, i suggest asking to open up a friends door panel (of a car that opens automatically), like a volvo
