My car's had an intermittent rattle from the headliner for the last year or so. Not bad enough to demand a fix, but now that I know where, I'll ask the dealer about it...

I had at different times thought the rattle was from somewhere in the dash, the windshield, or hidden up in the headliner around the sunroof. Well...

the sound is coming from the driver's sun visor. I noticed that when it's stowed, it droops about 1/2 inch at the bottom edge (closest to you) compared to the passenger side. There's free play between it being flush up against the headliner and the current resting position. Something about that free play causes the rattle. If it's rattling, just pushing the visor up against the headliner (where it should be, but it flops down right away again)stops it for a while.

I'll bring this up at my next service appt in a few weeks. If you're suffering from the on again-off again headliner rattle, check your visors to see if one isn't flush against the headliner when stowed - may be the source.

Wow, it took you over a year to figure that out? :lmao:

Do you store anything in the visor area at all? I have my swipe card for my parking deck stored up there (just a credit card size thing) and its held in snugly. So pointing that out, I would have been one to notice that could be a problem right off the bat. Actually you never noticed movement in the visor when it would make that rattle? Im assuming it would flop up and down causing a rattle/banging noise.

...why not try just undoing it from its clip, then pull it slightly toward you so it doesn't touch the plastic clip, mine will rattle a bit on any relatively rough road and that is how I solved the noise problem...
...the rest of the time I never hear anything from the visor area unless the visor is bumping up against the clip, so simply move it away again...

Well, yeah, sometimes it takes me a while to catch on. :dunno:
The sound is too 'substantial' sounding to seem like a measly visor would be the cause. But there you go.

I don't store anything above there, so it's not from being forced out of position by cards/cds/hot pockets.

I have a rattle that annoys the @##$% out of me coming from the passenger side sun visor clip. Every once in a while i have to lean over and mess with it a little bit. Unfortunately it doesn't always solve the problem. I am going to see if it is possible to tighten the screw or something.

Oh yeah, and i don't recommend trying to fix it while driving 85 on the highway.... let's just say it can cause some problems.
