View Full Version : is there a mod for a wheel lock on the '06 LX?

have a question about steering wheel locking.

in the '87, once you shut the car off and pull the key out, you could turn the steering wheel a tiny bit, and you'd hear this clicking sound. that made the wheel lock in that position, so the steering wheel cannot be turned without the key in the ignition.

that was very helpful for putting the club on the wheel. because the wheel was locked, it would remain in that position even under the weight of the club. i'd always intentionally leave it slanted, so that the top edge of the club would be at the windshield, making it impossible to drive hot wired.

in the '07, either the wheel doesn't lock, or i haven't figured out how to do it :) even with the car off, i can turn the wheel.... this means that, under the weight of the club, the wheel always returns to its 'normal' position, no matter how tilted it started before the club. that makes the club horizontal, the car totally driveable, defeating the purpose of the whole thing.

is there a mod i can do to get the wheel lock back?
thanx.....

sorry fellas..... tried clockwise, counter-clockwise for half+ a rotation. nothing. it slides back to the position it was in when i pulled the key out.

can anyone confirm that an '06LX should -definitely- have this? perhaps it's something that needs to be fixed, but i'd like to know for sure before i call the dealer.....

Ditto on my '06 LX SE.... the thing locks. Sounds like you might have some type of malfunctioning steering wheel/column.

ok. so i've played with it some more, esp. since everyone else seems to have it.

i found out something interesting, so i'd like some input from people with '05-'06s to see if they're seeing the same thing.

out of force of habbit, i never turn the wheel level before shutting off the car. it's usually about 90 degrees to the left, sometimes more. (this causes the spokes to be poiting up to the windshield, so the club, when put on, would be sort of propping the windshield).

with the wheel in this position, i've tried turning it a little in both directions, and it never locks. yesterday, when i pushed for a larger rotation sweep, i was finally able to lock the wheel. however, it only locks in its "resting" position, i.e., with your tires pointing straight and spokes parallel to the ground.

today, to get the wheel to lock, i had to force the wheel 270 degrees to get it to that position and lock.

so now, i guess it's not that i can't lock the wheel, is that i can't lock it in any position but parallel to the floor.

could someone people give it a try? pull into a spot with tires pointing straight, turn them 90+ degrees (to the left, for the sake of the argument), shut the car off and try to lock the wheel. will it let you lock in that position, or would you have to rotate it all the way back?

i'd much appreciate the help here :)

princess, do you know if there is some documentation about this?

I'll give it a try this weekend and see which way the spokes point!

thanx andy! :notworthy
the idea here is to have them angled up because having a club parallel to the floor renders it pretty much useless :)

my wheel locks at any angle...in fact today i had my camera and i wanted to take a pic of my instrument cluster, but the steering wheel was in teh way (turned to the right with teh spokes at a angle)..so i had to go get my keys and turn on to care so i could turn the wheel so that the wheels are straight

Ok, I just checked and they lock in any position.

Here's what I did:

My tires were pointing straight so I had to start up my car so I could turn them to the left. With car on, I turned the steering wheel to the left about 270 degrees and then turned off the car.

At first I couldn't get it to lock when I turned the steering wheel to the left or to the right. I then tried again, but this time I used a little more strength while turning the steering wheel and it locked when turned to the left.

You might want to try again but try using a bit more strength. Maybe that's the reason why it's not locking for you.... you're not turning it hard enough.

Oh, and in case you're wondering I have an '06 LX SE

IMHO, the club is gonna be useless on this car. If the theif is determined/smart enough to get past the immobilizer system, hacking the club off is going to be cakewalk.

Sooo - just got home, and my son had the Accord here so I figured I'd jump on it before he took off again.... :lmao:

On mine, the steering wheel locks in 2 positions. If you turn the wheel to the right, it locks in about the 2 o'clock position (that is, if you put a white mark on the very top of the steering wheel when straight, and turn it like you're taking a right turn, the white mark is at 2 o'clock). Can you guess the other position it locks in? Yep, the 8 o'clock position - exactly 180 degrees opposite.

Now I'm not rocket scientist - but it sounds like the locking prawl engages in 2 positions on the wheel - 180 degrees apart - but I'm willing to bet that the location of the locking point may be different on everyone's car, depending on how the wheel got put on (just speculation, btw).

Anyway - I get 2 locking points, and in my case the spokes are angled somewhat upward.....

QFT!!! Dont they just bring a hacksaw and saw right through the stearing wheel? I think those clubs were just a fad.

Yeah but I still use it. It deters the casual thief a little bit if I angle it to block the bottom of the seat, then they can't really get in and sit down.

did anyone ever see those things on tv?

for the club, they would just get 2 pieces of pipe over the 2 parts..and then push off of one with a foot and pull the other one with thier arms and they would just break the club off...simple...took them 20 seconds at most, after they were in the car.
