mnkyman 10-19-2006, 09:27 PM i was wondering..does anyone have any of those like license plate blockers that reflect light back when someone attempts to take a picture of the license plate?
my city just recently put in a bunch of new red light cameras with a bunch more on teh way
...i know..some of you ppl are just gonna say dont run the light..
and i know..but what if it just happens..i dont wanna ticket
so i was wondering if anyone has any of those products and how they like or dislike it?

chanke4252 10-19-2006, 11:03 PM wow, if that works I'll definately buy some. I generally obey traffic laws, but everyone, every once in a while misjudges a light.
in4mation 10-20-2006, 12:57 AM In Hawaii, we used to have those camera van's that would park on the side of the freeway and snap your picture if you were going over the speed limit. They would strategically be around a corner where you couldn't see them, etc. Hundreds of people were getting tickets through the mail with a photo of their plates.
Then some shops came out with a clear plastic that you stick over the plate and at a certain angle, totally washes out the plate so you can't see anything. I had a friend who used this on his car, and it actually does work. When you look at it from an angle, you can't see diddly squat!
I'm not sure about a spray, though. :dunno:
TypeG 10-20-2006, 01:13 AM as far as i know, redlight cameras don't use a flash. later.
Peniole 10-20-2006, 05:29 AM Some redlight cameras still use the regular flash. Some of them however use a red flash - I'm sure Benji knows the one infamous intersection near the Berkeley campus across from that AnimeV store - those ones might still show your plate no matter what you do.
One trick done in the UK is a couple of layers of seran wrap, enough to screw recognition, but not enough to get noticed by the naked eye.
I agree some of those cameras are just plain wrong, money making is their only purose. Particularly the speed ones if their tolerances are set too rigidly. However, generally they do serve to keep us safe.
As always don't run a red light, if you do I will have to take you out back and shoot you in the behind. :lmao:
Confucius say "Painful memory stop idiot running red light" :D

No... I got a BIG flash (front and rear) one time when I was in AZ.
Also, they setup the photo thing on FREEWAY!! (the first and only? state to do that so far) It is CRAZY coz ppl slam on their brakes when they see it.
but again, depends on the city you live.
mnkyman 10-20-2006, 10:06 AM well my city has only had some in downtown, but they recently decided to add a couple hundred more..so...im thinking about getting this spray..they say it works better than the place covers
..u dont necessarily need a flash for it to work...if you tilt it past an angle for 30-45 degrees (IE: the camera is above you, giving you a sufficient angle) the area is just blurred
Askani 10-20-2006, 09:39 PM I bought the photo blocker previously. It does not work. Don't waste your money on it.
mnkyman 10-21-2006, 04:44 PM where did u buy it from?
ebay?
lol..maybe someone sold you a can of clear coat with a photoblocker sticker over it lol
messfeeder 10-21-2006, 11:12 PM I have seen the ads in car magazines for this stuff. I was thinking about trying it, too, since we are about to get the red light cams around where I live. This isn't going to make the streets safer. Rather than fixing the real problem (light timing that causes traffic to back up heavily), the city wants to make some money off of the people who get stuck in the intersections on short yellow lights. I would be OK with the cameras if they fixed the real problem first! :furious:
I havent look too closely into license plate blockers but in theory one of the clear covers should work if designed right. I'm not a big fan of the speed and red light cameras in our area, but the local paper published all of their locations in the city so everyone pretty much knows their locations. Its easier to just slow down and watch the lights carefully, but people make mistakes, I mean the news even had a story about the cameras catching not only city workers and officials on them but police officers as well. Anyway, the theory in practice...
Theres a little thing we have in xray called a grid. This is a flat cover that is placed over our xray cassttes to help filter out unwanted radiation (similar to what a license plate cover could do). Inside the small square/rectangle are thin strips of lead that are gradually sloped outward, similar to window blinds, but from a focused center area. If the thing was clear, you could see thru it from straight back, but at an angle the image (license plate) would be cut off. So, if this is the same type of deisgn employed in license plate covers, I could see it working to block the pic from the angle of the camera.
98SMG 10-23-2006, 07:33 PM I had my plates sprayed with this stuff on my previous car and in two years - no tickets (and I know I was photographed a couple of times). I just bought another one for my new accord.
chanke4252 10-24-2006, 12:28 AM I thought of this thread today when I took a wrong turn and went through a toll road that I usually don't use (no reason other than because it's a toll). I threw my money in the basket, got the green light, drove through, and FLASH. I swear, if I get a ticket in the mail for going through without paying a toll...well, I'll probably just complain a lot, but then after I'm done complaining I'll invest in one of these things.
mnkyman 10-24-2006, 10:47 AM ^? lol u payed but it still took a picture?
im going to see if they sell this stuff at autozone or somewhere...it costs like 30 dollors on ebay..and u never know what they give u..
if u try to order it from the site its like 30 plus like 15 for shipping ...

Yes, they do.
Career918 10-25-2006, 09:19 AM Read your local automotive codes. The DMV website usually has a FAQ with this entry.
Obstruction of the license plate by any means is USUALLY illegal. Mud, spray paint, "anti-photo" products, etc.
Devil's advocate: Nothing is illegal until they catch you doing it. Hence the amount of speeding of which I am guilty.
Legal point: check your local by-laws or talk to a traffic attorney. Here in AZ you have the right to question your accuser. An automatic camera can not be questioned. Also, if the LEO (law enforcement organization) attempts to tell you that they have a sworn officer reviewing the pictures that is not valid in court.
I would advise that you do not obsure your plate, just make a fuss in court if you ever get the ticket.

Challenging the photo because no officer was present when the photo was taken has not been very sucessful in AZ.
However, I know that people are registering their cars in their opposite sex spouses name. The notice comes in the mail (with is not proper service) and you only have to say as the registered oener you were not driving the car, you are not obligated to identify the driver. We are talking about civil tickets here, not criminal ones.
If you get a letter in the mail (you did not sign for it) its not proper service by the AZ Statute. They have 60 days to serve you personally or have you sign for registered mail.
chanke4252 10-26-2006, 08:58 AM ^? lol u payed but it still took a picture?
Yah, it was really weird, is that normal? I hope they don't send me a ticket.
OOT: I'm also hoping that the speeding ticket I got a while back somehow got lost in the system (not likely) due to the fact that I got the vehicle properly registered (replacing dealer registration and plates) and got a new license (replacing my old out of state one) less than a week after I got the ticket. Maybe I'll get the ultra-lazy ticket-enterer dude who throws the ticket away instead of entering it or processing it or whatever they do.

Take a picture of your license plate at an angle (with flash) and tell me if the pictures come out.

I tried that one! The plate is clearly readable.
98SMG 11-07-2006, 07:06 PM In red light cameras they use very strong flash, which is why it will not work with regular camera
Carnutz 12-25-2006, 09:07 AM Save your money... I tried the photo-blocker on my other car. I doubt it really works and its way too expensive.
On one of the photo blocker cans, the bottom label still had the original stamp on it. It is clear glitter. You can get the same thing in a crafts store for $1.99.
I took a picture of it at an angle with my camera and flash and it was easily read.
More snake oil in a can.
Accordlover 12-25-2006, 10:08 AM I ran a redlight by accident last week on my way home from school. It was rainging and I was going thre posted 40mph, but I know when I saw the yellow light come on I didn't have enough time to hit the brakes and slow down. (No ABS here :( And it was a first rain in awhile as well, so slick roads. Wasn't in the mood to spin, however, it sounds like fun!
