Road trip.....kinda long version!
We got up at 5AM on Friday & hit the road toward NV by 7:30. The first couple of hours were nice & uneventful. Well, other than I spend a while on most trips arguing with my car. Her Nav system & I don't agree sometimes on which way we're going. I always win! I've been the family navigator too long to just trust a machine! Of course, she's been a real bladder saver too! In the heavily populated areas you can't assume just because a freeway has an offramp that there will be an onramp too. There have been those times that when stuck in traffic we can just aim for a piddle stop without worrying about how to get back on because she'll get us there nicely!! When nearly reaching Tahoe my cell phone rang & I got to chat with my buddy that's doing their first post-retirement cross country trip. I was coming up on one of their favorite places....Tahoe. They visit there as much as we do Disneyland. She was calling from the Animal Kingdom in Disney World FL. Had a few giggles before the mountains cut us off.
After the Tahoe area I just let Tink's Nav system have her way. She has a weird idea of "direct route" sometimes, but I knew there were several ways to get where we were headed & her's would work too. We knew we'd hit some winds, but know the car can handle it as long as she doesn't get sandblasted. We'd just left the last of civilization that we'd be seeing for a while when there were objects in the road. It looked like 2 metal pieces on one side of our lane & what could've been a canvas top for an RV awning. At this time there was an oncoming car too. The prince did a wonderful swerving maneuver that placed us between the objects. Well, unfortunately the front wheel base is slightly smaller than the back. One tire grazed the canvas looking object. BOOM! That tire shredded! So while he was putting on the mini spare, I called my mom (that's where we were headed) I gave her all the tire info, brand, style & size, I told her to start calling around to find us a matching one. We still had about an hour to go.
This trip was to help my mom & her husband be able to load their camera pictures on their computers. I had called as we left to remind them that their camera needed to be at the computer to do this. When we arrived they'd found a tire in Carson City. An hour+ away. Her husband said the camera was plugged in & charging. After they left to find our tire & have it mounted we discovered that he had plugged the camera on the charger without batteries in it! OK, not the sharpest tool in the shed! They'd left us alone in their giftshop. I dealt with the customers that came in, also explaining that this was my first time here & please be patient. They were. At 4:00 we headed to their home to do the other computer. All this time (2 years) they'd not been able to get their pictures on their computer. Both of their systems are really out of date, but should handle that. We found out that when their modem had failed AOL sent them an external one, it plugs into the port that the camera cable does. He tried added a USB, but it's impossible with their OLD set up. They finally arrived with our tire at 7. (took them 5 hours!) We'd planned on hitting the road home at 5. They insisted on dinner. We didn't get out of there until 10. So we rolled into our garage at 3:30 this morning. Had to take the long way because they closed a bridge for repairs at 9:00.
One little side note. On the Pilot's first post roadtrip after her first oil change. We had a blowout on hwy 101 about 100 miles from home. That's when we discovered the cheesy Goodyears that Honda had put on her & ordered 4 new tires the next day!
We have to leave in a bit to go to Fresno. Our oldest daughter has computer problems......
Tomorrow we'll be the acting "parents of the bride" at one of youngest daughter's friend's wedding....
I just want to stay home for the rest of the weekend after yesterday, but can't!:bawling:
