Does anybody remember the device that would shut off your AC under full throttle acceleration their buy taking some load off the engine for better acceleration? I thought this was a good idea and I wonder why it isn't still around.

I believe it is still in use on most cars built today.. It Controls the A/C compressor cycling switch... In effect it only shuts off compressor under full throttle... I run alot w/o A/C on due to the demand the compressor puts on engine!
It's strange how @ 75 MPH you can feel the compressor kick in??
I don't remember my 5th gen being this bad..

But if I am sitting at a stop and want to open it up, with one push of a button the A/C is off....

I just leave mine on auto. There's been no complaints in the gas mileage. It's 32 on trips. It would probably make a difference around town....but I rather be comfy. When it's off I keep squealing the tires. Here we are at about 6K & I may need another rotation soon! Now that the weather is warmer, my tires should last longer......

I can feel the compressor kick in all the time, especially if I turn it on manually. It's a major pull on the engine. Going down the same hill using engine braking, with AC on I end up at around 29MPH at the bottom of the hill, without AC I'm doing almost 40 at the same spot.

The Accord has one. Romp on it on a hot day and feel your vents go tepid.
