timming marks on 87 accord

when setting my timing i cant even see the marks through the window when shooting the timing light..i have marked them white, if i set everything to tdc i can see them but when i time it the marks are nowhere to be found. will a bad advance diaphram show a vaccum leak?

Yes the Vacuum advance diaphragm can be checked with vacuum and see if it moves...

Did you disconnect vac to advance and plug line/s before checking timing?
