View Full Version : Another Honda Class action suit (odometer)

I just got a letter in the mail today that states that the odometers in 2002 to 2006 Hondas and the 2007 Honda Fit may inaccurately represent the actual mileage of the vehicle by 2-4% (too much). A suit was brought upon American Honda Motor Co on April 13, 2004 that will increase the warrantied mileage by 5% from 3/36k to 3/37,800. The replacement parts warranty is increased from 1/12k to 1/12,600 and the California emissions warranty is extended from 7/100k to 7/105k. This also affects leases by increasing the mileage limits by 5%. I will enclose a copy of the letter as soon as I get it scanned.

-EDIT-

Just added the scan of the letter.

interesting...although we hit the 36 month mark before we hit the 36k mile mark, so i guess it doesnt mean much for us.

And you care????? :dunno:

Acuras are affected by this too. Just FYI. Most of the Acura guys don't care. It really doesn't affect the car much and the difference is really negligible over the life of the car.

Heck, many of them even have aftermarket wheels anyways, so it could be off my more or less.... :lmao:

You were just complaining the other day that you don't put enough on the Accord. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Just kiddin' man. If you lease, than I can see the problem, but there are special considerations for those who lease these vehicles.

may inaccurately represent the actual mileage of the vehicle by 2-4% (too much). >>>

Not sure about the 06, but the speedometer in the 96 was off by about 4-5 mph over. IIRC, the 1st gen CLs were recalled, but the 5th gen Accord only got a TSB. It did raise some concerns whether or not the odometers were affected, but the issue was just eventually dropped and forgotten about.

Ah, this would explain why I seem to be putting more miles on the Accord compared to what I was putting on the Camry (and I know I'm not driving any more than before since I'm much too busy working to actually get a chance to go anywhere).

I thought it was odd that my odometer would read 25 miles travelled when it was only about 20-22 miles with the Camry (daily work round-trip distance was approx. 20-22 miles on the Camry). I just chalked up the difference to my imagination or poor memory of what it actually was with the Camry. But after seeing this, I don't believe it was my imagination anymore.

Damn you Honda :thumbsdow *waives fist*

Not a big deal, but I think this affects those who purchase too (as well as those who lease but plan to sell their car instead of turn it in). When you go to sell your car you'll have 2-4% more miles on the car than it really should. Say you would have had 98,000 miles on the car you end up having 101,920. Most buyers may not percieve it differently but some could. Sure you could explain to people that really its not that many miles because Honda screwed up and didn't calibrate things correctly ... but is that really a selling point you want to point out on your car??? Some may not even see your car for sale, for example if they looked on autotrader for cars under 100k and your add gets filtered out. Again I don't think this is likely a big deal but it does kinda suck.

Lol I guess we wern't getting quite as good of fuel economy as we thought either.

My od in the accord and civic are spot on.

So we will ignore the action. and move on...

how come honda isn't offering free checking (calibration?) of the odometers? (or is it something that'd be covered under existing warranty as is if you think it may be off?)

Apparently, Nissan is also being sued over this issue.

Hmm It would be interesting to compare our Volvo, Mercury, and the Accord to see how far off they all are.

So digging up an old thread here - but today I got a letter from Honda Financial services saying the following:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for being a loyal American Honda Finance Corporation customer.

Enclosed is your refund check for the Honda Odometer Class Action lawsuit, as disclosed in the Federal Court Notice you received.

We appreciate your business.

Best Regards,
AHFC
And, enclosed in the envelope, was a check to the tune of appx $270 with the subject of "Odometer Class Action Settlement".

Anyone else get this little "gift" in their mailbox today? Guess leasing 2 and financing 2 Hondas over the past 5 years got me on the list to get money back.....

Make sure that it isn't some identity theft scam. You never know these days. Contact Honda direct and ask if they "really" sent it. If it's real then I'm calling them too. I think mine got lost in the mail. :naughty: :D

Is Honda really sending checks?
I thought they were like going to extend the mileage warranty by like 3%.

It only applies to people who leased their vehicles and were charged for excess mileage.

Here's the official verbage on the class action settlement...

As Kunal said, it's an identity theft scam. No doubt about it. Better sign the check over to me to be safe. I'll take care of the rest. :paranoid: :D

Ah - thx for the pointer - yep, that'd be us. The wife's Pilot lease last summer had excess mileage and we paid for that at the end of the lease. So that explains the value of the check! Hmm - wonder if I go over the mileage on my current '06 Pilot lease.... :D OK - makes sense now.

You can go 5% over the allotted mileage on your current lease and should not get charged any extra fees. If the dealership tries to do charge you an excess charge, just bring along a copy of the settlement letter... that should remind them.
