View Full Version : Range of keyless entry grumbles
greggdogg 12-15-2006, 12:26 PM I know I've brought this up before, but the range of the keyless entry/trunk pop is HORRIBLE. If I'm in a parking lot and there are cars on either side of mine, I have to be no more than 10 feet or so from the car to be able to open the doors.
I've already swapped batteries in the remotes, so it's not that.
My fiancee's CR-V has the same key and that works from nearly a time zone away.
Any ideas on how I could extend the range of this thing before I drive it down an escalator?
Peniole 12-15-2006, 12:39 PM Might not be the key but the receiver. Mine works outside from about 200m away, inside a full carpark it's a bit more variable, could be more than 200m if it bounces off the concrete correctly, or as close as 50m. I even can get it to lock through a concrete wall (no kidding), physically I'm about 10m in front of it, but I've walked around a corner through a door at least about 300m.
in4mation 12-15-2006, 01:13 PM Where is the receiver located? And does it matter if yo have tint on the glass? I know that's a stupid question, but the tint on my glass reduced my range when I had my Viper alarm. Of course this was with DEI's antenna.

It is in the drivers power window/lock switch box.
Conundrum 12-15-2006, 02:18 PM Well don't feel too bad...mine is horrible as well. Basically I have to be close enough to spit and hit the car in order to unlock it most of the time. When in a completely open parking lot (so no other cars near me), I can normally to it from about 20-50m away, but thats about the max.
Arguably I might be able to take it in and have them look at it...but meh it's not work it imo...considering its a trivial thing really and I don't want techs ripping apart my car unless they have to. What would be interesting is if there was a DIY mod for boosting the receiver (maybe adding some sort of antenna inside the door), which would boost the range of the unit. Again I wouldn't rip apart my door just to do this...but if I had to open it to do something else, I wouldn't mind increasing my lock/unlock range as well.

Well, seeing as I have an extra switchbox, maybe I will try this sometime, just to see how hard it is.
Someone please find a way to extend the range! There are times I have to be right next to the car before it will unlock, and other times I will be home with my keys in my pocket and pop goes the trunk and I wont notice it until the next day. Such a PITA. The key under the chin works only sometimes. My previous car, which I installed aftermarket power door locks in, had an antenna on the receiver and the range was excellent. The woman, who has a new civic, which has the same fob, has great range as well.
Mike, if you find a way to add an antenna/increase the range I'm sure everyone would like to know about it. Its definitely worth pulling the door panel for since its such an easy thing to do in the first place.
Accordio 12-15-2006, 05:11 PM Mine has a huge distance. I was suprised how far I can unlock it from.
mnkyman 12-15-2006, 06:55 PM ya i hate the fact that i have to be withing a couple cars range when im in a parking lot..and can't exactly see the car, but know where it is (only about 20 feet from me)...this could be a health risk, what if you are being attacked? ..your panic button wouldnt work
i was thinking about this diy just a couple days ago..and thinking about making a post about it
i was thinking that if there is a antenna of some sort, possibly adding some sort of bigger antenna (like the ones off a wireless router)
anyway...if someone find out how to do it ..let me know..
oh also..what does the reciever actually look like? pics anyone?..maybe there a way we can ad some wire mesh behind it to extend the range in a certain direction
Accordlover 12-15-2006, 07:04 PM My Accord (Has acessory Keyless Entry OEM) has excellent range, but the coding back in 96' must've been odd, becuase there has been more than one occasion where my car has interferred with another Honda. For instance, I might press my unlock, and another older Honda near me will have its alarm go off. I've seen this mostly with 6th gen Accords, and 1996-2001 Civics.

Yeah I can usually unlock the car from just a couple of cars away in the parking lot but if I hold the key to my chin I can easily unlock the car from 400-500 feet.

lol...do you have any dental work?..if so do you keep you find that you get better reception when your mouth is open? :lmao:
BenjiBoy650 12-15-2006, 11:54 PM The key under the chin works. Try it and see...you don't have to take our word for it.
The panic button tends to work from a LOT farther than the other buttons. Try it. I've been able to set off the panic and not be able to turn it off until I run up right next to the car.
Panic button range has not been any better on my fob, thats a good thing tho since my horn on the panic mode is SUPER LOUD and quite embarrassing if it goes off!
And yeah the key under chin method works, but like I said not every time for me, maybe I'm not placing it under my chin correctly. And I dont think window tinting does much to affect it either, the crappy range was one of the first things I noticed, even before I bought the car and had the windows tinted.
